Canelo Alvarez vs Austin Trout

    Any thoughts on this?

Personally I think this is a big step up for Alvarez and if he wins I think they may try funnel him into PPV from now on. There seems to be a lot riding on making him (and Broner probably) the next big thing in professional boxing. I have to say I'm impressed by Canelo; watching his fight against Mosley it's clear that not only is he physically formidable in his poise, technique and power - he is also aggressive, well able to take a punch and very crafty for a young fighter. He seems adept at setting traps and playing a strategic game as opposed to banging away.

Trout, on the other hand, is often underrated I feel. He is technically sound and difficult to hit. However, he's not known for being a power puncher and having seen a video of him lately getting floored in the amateurs, I wouldn't have a whole lot of confidence in his chin. I think he needs to get Canelo's respect earlier on or he'll be departing early.

I've backed Alvarez by KO and I think it'll happen in the later rounds.

Apparently they are trying to seek an arrest warrant for Alvarez for the alleged incident with Ulises Solis a couple of years ago. http://www.badlefthook.com/2013/4/18/4238370/canelo-alvarez-arrest-warrant-2013-ulises-archi-solis-incident-fight-trout-boxing-news

Not an ideal time for this to happen for Canelo.

Both looked in great shape at the weigh in! Really looking forward to this

Sold out fight as well, always good to see.

Tough one to call, I'd be a bit surprised if Trout won though.

I just don't think GBP would have let Canelo take this fight if there was truly any great risk in it. Must have every confidence in their boy.

Anyone have any reliable links for the fight?

This is definitely a step up for Alvarez but I think he will take it in his stride. Bar the Hatton fight he has looked very impressive. Trout beat Cotto last time out, and while he looked good, and won easily, I think Cotto is shot. He has taken a lot of punishment in his career, and it started to show in the Trout fight. However, Trout proved he could take a punch in the Cotto fight so I think the fight will go the distance, with Canelo winning by maybe 3 rounds.

A win over a shot Cotto would be the best result of Canelo's career if they had faced.

This is a real test for Alvarez, its a toss up in my book, kudos to him if he wins well.

I've seen a lot of people say this and it just doesn't make sense. You just don't go from causing a fair bit of trouble to Floyd Mayweather - to suddenly being "shot" a few months later. Really looking forward to this! Hopefully it's a great fight and doesn't end in controversy.

I have a bad feeling that Trout will get robbed in this one i dont see him stopping Canelo and if it is any way close i see it going to Canelo, Canelo is seen as the future mainstream star of boxing the judges know this and this game is a buisness they wont want to put a loss on his record

Have Canelo up by 2 points at the moment because Canelo won 7th 10- 8 gave the 8th even but maybe should go to Trout

No way was that a 10-8...Has to be a 10-9. After the knockdown trout dominated.

Yeah but the judges will give it 10- 8 they wont see it as a 10- 9 round so no point in calling it a 10- 9

ah goodnight, just heard the judges scorecards after 8 and they all have Canelo cruising this fight, Trout needs a KO with these judges

goodnight to ye all, tis a farce. its a very close fight.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 542 ✭✭✭ooPabsoo

One of the judges scored it 78-71? ffs thats a joke

Christ what awful scoring disgrace i have Canelo winning by 1 point but honestly some of the rounds i gave to Canelo could go to Trout

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Jayob10

    where did u hear that?

WBC make the scorecards public after round 4 and round 8

one judge gave only one round to Trout, the others have Canelo clearly ahead

so the fight is over pretty much

    Open scoring is complete bullshít

115-112 canelo. Is that a new thing with the open scoring or has it always been the case.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,787 ✭✭✭Jayob10

I gave it to Canelo, his knockdown swung it for me, and I scored a 10-8 round

He has it by a point on my card

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 542 ✭✭✭ooPabsoo

118-109....I thought Canelo just about won the fight. But that is a disgrace

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,745 ✭✭✭Dick phelan

118 - 109 what a feckin joke what fight was that idiot watching joke way to wide

    118-109

That judge should be ousted, seriously thats scandalous, really makes a joke of the sport.

The hangers on were strapping the belts to him before it was even announced FFS

Canelo is the money man I guess

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 542 ✭✭✭ooPabsoo

Trout just didn't have the power to trouble Canelo. Not a mark on his face

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 548 ✭✭✭Three Seasons

Had Canelo ahead by a point or two. Although it was close on points IMO there was only one fighter who looked hurt and that was Trout.

nobody is shouting robbery, Canelo won but scoring it 116-112 is very generous

118-109 is simply criminal and indicates to me that this judge had clearly decided the victor before the first bell.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,003 ✭✭✭Big Ears

I also had it 114-113, with the knockdown swinging it. It was a close fight which could be scored either way, but we all should have known the craic here, Jose Sulaiman and the WBC wanted Canelo to win, therefore bar an unlikely knockout he will.
Sulaiman's creepy face, grinning as he pinned the WBC belt onto Trout before the scorecards were even read......disgusting. The WBA belt was also strapped to him not too long after, before a winner was announced aswell.

I use to like Canelo, but I can't stand anyone that's a puppy of Sulaiman's, to the point I would actually love to see him fight Floyd just to be shown up. But then again Floyd would probably need a stoppage to get the win.

I think Canelo can beat Floyd now. He impressed me with his movement and defensive skills.

Yeah id be inclined to agree with that, his defense really impressed me tonight against a slick southpaw. Mayweather wont go near him too much of a risk

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 542 ✭✭✭ooPabsoo

I don't think the fight will ever happen. Floyd isn't a natural Super Welterweight - after the punishment Cotton gave him at the weight, I don't think he'll fight at it again.

I thought Canelo boxed well, but he looked seriously gassed in the late rounds. If he was to beat Mayweather, he'd have to take him out early. Couldn't see him winning any more than 2-3 rounds in that fight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,358 ✭✭✭✭walshb

Disappointing fight. It had action, but very little clean scoring. Trout is very slick, but not a lot of pop in the shots. Canelo is a good overall boxer. He just didn't seem to be firing on all cylinders. Close fight throughout. A rd here or there. The 118-109 score was a bit too generous, even considering that several rds were close. Anyone got the punch stats?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,329 ✭✭✭Manc-Red

Canelo just won that 115-113 on my scorecard, Trout easily has been the best Boxer I've seen him fight.

Beautiful shot from Alvarez to knock Trout down for the first time in his career.

Think some of the scoring cards were helped with the handing over of a Brown envelope or two.... Jesus that fight was never 118-109.

    Crazy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 57,358 ✭✭✭✭walshb

BTW, Canelo's performance and issues with Trout are in no way a reliable gauge as to how he'd fare against Floyd. Trout is a deal bigger than Floyd. The main issue for Canelo was Trout's range, feet and movement. Long and rangy arms. Canelo gets close to Floyd a whole lot easier. Canelo for me is a bit too big and strong for an aged Mayweather.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭megadodge

Really enjoyed that fight. Very high skill level on display from both sides. A very good technical fight and better entertainment than I expected, though I knew it would be close.

I had Canelo a winner by 3 rounds and I've no doubt he won it, but I agree with everyone else 118-109 was ridiculous.

Surely anybody with doubts over Alvarez has to be revising their opinion now. To beat a boxer as skilful, awkward and just as good as Trout at such a young age shows tremendous quality.

Forgot to mention how classy Trout was in the post-fight interview. Makes a change from the other nonsense.
