This year, will not be following arses with OYB or Dundrum written on them. Will that be different? Will there be an eerie silence at the start? Who will we blame for missed opportunities.......?

The league will be less crowded and less attractive. The Lord giveth with one hand, and taketh away with the other.

Good luck with it. Happy racing :)

But, without Orwell, those slacker students will have to help out with the organising!

    From CI -

NON – OPEN RACES: A non – open race can be either a club race or a league race.

A Club Race is a race promoted by a CI registered club primarily for members of that club. However the club may allow participation from members of other clubs and non attached members of CI, provided they have the appropriate licence. It will not be mandatory to appoint a Commissaire but in all other ways the race will be conducted under the rules of CI.

A League Race is a race open to members of more than one club and non attached members of CI provided they have the appropriate licence. There will be no prize list per race but there may be an overall prize list. The promoter must appoint a competent person to fill the role of commissaires and in all other ways the race will be conducted under the rules of CI

Presumably this is a League Race then??

One week to go then before the rivalries commence and any casual inter-club fraternising turns to downright hostility. I'm starting early though and I'd just like to point out that you all smell. (Any chance of a free tow during the races though?) :)

    Yes. It's the IRC/Lucan/UCD/St. Tiernan's inter-club league.

I have to say, I will miss the Orwell presence :o

I seem to recall that all I saw of you in several races last year was your rear end as it disappeared into the distance. I question your suggestion that this sight, and the sight of various other hairy Orwell riders doing likewise, was attractive, on a number of levels.

    Yes. It's the IRC/Lucan/UCD/St. Tiernan's inter-club league.

Yep, So therefore open to members of these clubs, and non-attached members of CI provided they have the appropriate licence?

The Rider Safety Video on the site is a good resource for people new to racing.

AFAIK, it's only open to members of the four clubs, or at least it was last year. You should probably contact one of the clubs to clarify.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭colm_gti

The league is pretty tight with numbers for various reasons, partly why Orwell have moved to run their own league. Registration has also closed for the icl as far as I'm aware. You'd be lucky to get in now even if you were a member of the participating clubs I'd imagine.

You could always join one of the above clubs if you had to, I hear st. tiernans are a sound bunch ;)

Hmm, hairy, the club HQ is under a bridge, undertake ICL races mostly as the light is fading... Curiouser and curiouser. Do ye ritually eat goats before a race? :pac:

    Probably answered here:
Who can race in the Club League?
Members of Lucan CRC, South Dublin CC, St Tiernans CC, UCD CC and Usher IRC can race in the Club League. Please contact your club's representative to find out if you're eligible to race.

but no harm asking one of the clubs directly I guess.

Couldn't see another thread so ...

The interclub league kicks off on Thursday (25th Apr) with Tiernans hosting a handicap race from the Blackbull.

A bit of a change this year with Orwell out growing the league and being replaced by South Dublin (with Lucan/Staggs, St Tiernans, IRC/Usher and UCD still there).

Fancy new website too --> http://theclubleague.com/

I'm looking forward to it, anyone else racing?

I'll be there. I'm not liking the weather forecast though, it brings back memories of the many stupidly wet evenings for the league races of last year. I'm still not convinced that all of the water has yet drained from my rims, and the freehub is giving me stink eye from the corner where I abandoned it after the last league race I did last year (I abandoned it with a promise to be nice to it and clean it up "any day now", but I lied).

Well Dublin City had dried out and (dare I say it...) the sun has got his hat on :)

I'm not on speaking terms with the weather at the moment. This morning's commute was my first time riding a bike without mudguards in months. Was it dry? No. Was it only slightly damp? Was it feck! Lots of rain, lots of water on the roads. I should have donned one of my daughter's nappies before I left home :(

And tempting fate further I've just checked the predicted rainfall over Dublin on www.yr.no and it predicts rainclouds passing over the city centre and northside in or around the time I'll be cycling to the race. A person could become justifiably paranoid at this rate! I think the hat the sun is wearing at the moment is probably a waterproof one.

I'd struggled in the A4 race on Sunday after putting a good few hilly miles in my legs the week before so I wasn't not sure how I would go.

I was in the Limit group and led off with an Usher rider up to the main road - I thought I might be struggling straight away as my legs weren't happy with pushing hard straight away - On the road where we started to get up and overs going. To be honest it was a little slow. Some riders just not getting over fast enough and others pulling in and speeding up but were averaging around 33-34kph. We slowed at one point to about 27kph so I tried to shout to get up and overs working again and jumped over the line to try and get it working. It seemed to have a light effect but not much. Took the first left and got some good pace down that road till we hit the first of the the two hills. The limit group broke apart here and by the time we hit the top of the second hill I think there was about 8 of us left. Maybe less.

Just after the left at the cross roads we were caught by semi limit and the pace picked up. I managed to get on the back and used the time at the back to get my heart rate under control. Just before the next left I pushed to the front to see another Lucan rider jumping off the front, I slowed in down a bit to help him and took the left in second till a couple of other riders decided to chase him down.

A few km befor the final right hander near the church the scratch/semi scratch caught us and we went up another notch. I was in the pack and feeling ok. Didn't realise I hadn't far to go till I saw the chequered flag and moved across to move up the group - didn't bother sprinting though as I was no where near the front. Probably finished around 20th.

Really enjoyed it and can't wait for next time!

Couldn't have asked for a nicer evening for the first race of the ICL! Pity we only had one lap thanks to the sun setting :o

Lovely evening for it. Brilliant conditions.

Sadly I was less than useless tonight. Got dropped out of Semi-Limit well before the first roundabout. Hammered along to try and get back on but they stayed just out of reach.

Legs just didn't have it tonight. Need a few more weeks to crank it up again I think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 340 ✭✭maloner

Semi-limit and had a blast. Did a good few stints at the front and was happy to leave it all out there as knew we weren't going to stay away and wasn't going to mixing it up for the sprint so happy out to work hard and finish in the bunch.

Maloner couldn't agree more I was in the semi-limit too and it was fast and fun. However I think if there was ever a race that we could have stayed away that was it, I was pushing as hard as I could to achieve that. Can't wait for next Thursday.

And great results for Lucan CRC!.

Well that was humiliating, I didn't realise that the crowd I was with were trying to break away within the first 100 metre, got dropped within 500metres, legs failed within 1 km.

Pulled in, low blood sugars, damn you Diabetes. Waited up at the finish, great push at the end, everyone seemed to hang in bar maybe 5.

The sun made it hard to see the approaching riders until the last 50metres, but it looked like a strong finish all round.

I was in Semi-Limit. I was so distracted by the sociable atmosphere at the start that I managed to convince myself that a cluster of riders directly in front of me at the start line were in Semi-Limit too despite knowing them to be in Semi-Scratch. So when Semi-Limit was sent off, I was in no hurry while I waited for the riders in front of me to roll out too. Which they didn't of course. One of them (I think it was colm_gti but subsequent events caused much of the evening to be a bit blurry so I'm not sure exactly) helpfully turned round and tactfully said something like "Semi-Limit, right?". Yes, we are, I thought to myself. God help me I need all the help I can get so he patiently repeated it until the cogs in my brain started moving and I thought, "Ah heyor. Ah jaysus. Outta my way!". So it was a sprint form the start line to get onto my group who were already up the road a little bit.

And I could have done without a hard effort from the off, I've not been in great shape recently so I've been taking it easy. Then I go and make it hard for myself, I'll be having harsh words with myself later. Anyway, I got on and instantly wondered whether that was me done for the night. But I recovered faster than I expected, and being of a simple disposition I moved quickly to the front to absolutely bury myself. We were organised at the front in fits and starts, but as a group we mostly maintained a decent pace. There were some riders in there that seemed particularly strong, two from Usher, one from Lucan. I found myself chasing down their wheels several times (I take a dog approach to racing, a rider off the front seems much like a car to me so I just chase after him/her mindlessly ...and I never have a clue what to do when I catch up with them). Shortly before we caught Limit, one of the Usher guys casually rode off the front and I couldn't hold his wheel, and if it wasn't for the fact that maloner came through I'd probably still be out there lying in a ditch, hugging my knees to my chest and rocking gently.

...speaking of Usher, they seemed like the largest number of riders there tonight. They've taken over from Orwell in terms of numbers, though with better helmets! (sorry Orwell, I just like that odd shade of green).

I stayed with the group that formed after Scratch and Semi-Scratch caught us, and I felt very comfortable as we motored along the main road towards the finish, being towed along by the bunch was easier than busting a gut on the front of my group. I made a few efforts to move up, but we were spread all across our own lane so overtaking meant moving to the other side of the road and I wasn't willing to do it. The road wasn't busy at the time but there were a few cars that went by and it just wasn't worth the risk. Besides, I ended up in a ditch last year when the bunch swayed to the left to accommodate people on the wrong side of the road who pulled over on top of the bunch as a car appeared - a stupid and unnecessary crash and I didn't want to be the cause of another one of them. Several people did move up on the wrong side though, with the inevitable panic and swinging across when traffic appeared. Thankfully there were no crashes though.

From where I was I could just about see the finishing sprint above the heads of the wall of riders in front of me, and I rolled over the line with the group. I'm happy enough with how it went, I'd not been expecting much going into it but I think the shortness of the race suited me in the circumstances. It was a good workout and far preferable to doing a turbo trainer session. And between cycling to and from the race I clocked up over 100km for the evening so good training all round then.

What's more, I came home to a freshly made chocolate cake (g'wan the wife!). Very tasty cake too, even if I did eat it with whipped cream that my wife casually described as "definitely going off" - can't say I noticed, so either I'm turning into my father and eating just about anything rather than throw it away (I draw the line at cold tapioca sandwiches!) or I'm proving his mantra that "hunger is good sauce" (which loosely translates as "if you're really hungry you'll eat anything, ya little fecker, now eat your cold tapioca sandwiches and ENJOY THEM!").

I know you might've lost your love of Orwell, but actively /trying/ to get food poisoning before the Randonée is a bit much.

I live by simple rules - if it requires effort on my part to get the food from my plate to my mouth then it's probably fine despite any appearances or smells to the contrary, if it is able to get from plate to mouth without any assistance from me then I definitely don't want it.

Besides, I've contracted food poisoning seemingly without any effort on my part in the past so the passive approach hasn't been working for me. This time I'll try attacking it head on, sure what's the worst that can happen?... (I'd like to emphasis the rhetorical nature of that question, *please* don't answer, the memories are, ironically, far too "fresh" still!).

Happy enough with last night, feel like my legs are coming back to me after their short holiday, sat up for the sprint when I saw the elbows and shoulders flying, not interested in that, wasn't positioned very well coming up to it anyway....good workout and at least I know where the finish is next time it takes that route!

Thanks for doing that, it would have been a much more "challenging" evening if you hadn't alerted me. :)

Things gets a lot simpler when you recognise me for the thick that I am. It's usually not necessary to guide me by the arm to the start line, point me in the direction of the disappearing bunch, and mime a pedalling action, but I can't rule out this being necessary either on any particular night. :pac:

Brittas tonight. Weather looks good --> http://www.yr.no/place/Ireland/Leinster/Brittas/
This weeks race will be a 4 group DMS (individual race for each group) to be held at Brittas. The course will most likely 3 laps over the bridge (weather permitting) finishing on the drag at the cottage for a total distance of 42km.

Is the sign on point over the embankment opposite the Blue Gardenia? (just trying to work it out in my head from the map)

Great race. About 25-30 perhaps rolled out and it was handy enough for the first half lap. Did a good few turns at the front but didn't push it when I was up there. At the top of the drag first time through (at the finish) a small group of maybe 4 rode over the top to get a gap. Seemed wise to get over to them so put the foot down and got over with another Tiernans rider and someone else in tow. By the time we got back on to the N81 we working well with up and overs and everyone putting in work. I had thought before hand that I might give a dig in the last 500/1000m before the left turn off the N81 and so I did! I persuaded a UCD guy who happened to be up front to come with me by telling him there was a gap (there wasn't really....) and we buried ourselves (I did anyway) and opened up clear daylight. It was feckin great. At the far side of the bridge though my super feeling was quite a bit less super and I'd lost his wheel and was suffering. I held off the pack for another KM or two but got swallowed up a few KM out. Held onto them though and recovered a bit so when a UCD (I think?) guy jumped off the front I went with him and when he tied up went past (was in second at this stage I think) but quite soon after I blew up for the last time and rolled in breathless in about 8th and last of the breakaway riders about 10-15 seconds back. Was great :) More sensible use of my resources may have yielded a better result but happy out with how it went.

Supposed to be a DMS race today, later told there were two handicap races, SS/S and SL/L. Started in SS, assumed S were chasing us (was later told that they were given the option of a longer wait and their own race, which they took), yet pretty much nobody was willing to work to stay away from Scratch.

There was a bit of traffic on the road on the way out, and a UCD rider, a clubmate and I got around it safely. The UCD rider was way up the road and the two of us were chasing to get up to him to little avail. We both thought he was away for the race. Bunch obviously decided to ride to catch us, and kept riding to catch him too after half a lap of him out on his own!

I attacked a good bit, and jumped across to a few breaks, but this just seemed to kickstart the bunch to start riding again and reel any break back. Pretty much continued like that for the whole race.

The above UCD rider and a Lucan rider jumped about 3-5km out, and I put in one last kick to try and get across to them, followed by an SDCC rider. Just as we got across, the now working group swarmed us once more...had enough at this stage and soft pedaled to the finish.

Good workout if nothing else, clearly need to do a bit less work if I want glory, but I have little interest in bunch sprints
