Zyxel Router cannot connect to certain websites?

We have had a ZyXEL P-660HN-T1A_IPv6 from Eircom for 6 months now. Starting around 3 months ago we had an issue were certain websites such as:

    www.tumblr.com
    www.wordpress.com
    www.tvtropes.org

could not be accessed at all by any computer on the network. It would say it was connected to the website but would hang on "Waiting for ....". Resetting to factory defaults on the router fixed the problem. A month later the problem occurred again, reset the router, no problems. Now however, we have the problem and it wont go away no matter how much we reset the box.

I've been in contact with Eircom and they are sending a new router but does anyone have any idea on how to fix this? My inner web developer is frustrated beyond imagining with this.

On the router itself or my computer's connection?

Try it on your computer first, if that works set it on the router.

    Another I use is Google's DNS, 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

I tried both DNS pairs and the websites still refuse to load...

Have you tried doing a tracert to see what the response is?

I have had a similar experience with a Zyxel P-660HN-T1A . My phone line developed a fault just over a month ago and will have to be replaced. I was using a Netopia router at the time and was advised by Eircom broadband support to change to a Zyxel router they sent me a few months ago.

Changing to this router meant everything slowed down and browsing became almost impossible with about 70% of pages redirecting to a "your DSL is down page".

Eventually last Friday in frustration I went back to the Netopia router and lo and behold my internet is suddenly much quicker.

The line still has the same fault according to diagnostics but I am getting quite acceptable download speeds with only one crash since last Friday.

It seems to me that a new Zyxel modem is inferior to a four year old Netopia 2247.

Posting update, we got a new Router, a Eircom D1000 . CHanged it and everything seemed to work for the first day or two. (DSL connection went down on the second day but turning it and on again fixed that.)
Just now the problems come back for Tumblr.com and Gamefaqs.com.

Wordpress is NOT affected now for some reason.......sigh I'm just so goddamn tired of this....

EDIT: Wait no, now Wordpress is gone too, $%^$%^ this thing.

This sounds like malware on your PC's. Get Malwarebytes, install it, update it and give them all a full scan in safe mode

You don't mention what devices you have. Is your phone/tablet affected?

My Experia P is affected yeah.

OK, another update. A restart of the router and quickly accessing Tumblr.com the instant the internet light on the router turns green got me access, a few seconds later a refresh made it hang as mit usually does.

Could this be something to do with the DSL or something? I'm now accessing those websites from a proxy server so its not like I'm blocked completely but yeah.

What firmware is on the modem, is it 1.02VBC0.D0 or 1.02VBC2.D0?

2.00(AADU.2)D0. The modem is an Eircom D1000. Cannot find anything about firmware for this make on the net and google gives back nothing.

I noticed that on Tumblr if I'm not logged in it does give me the login page but wont load anything after I log in.

Another update. I thought that wireless camera we installed 2 months back might actually be causing interference. I unplugged it but still nothing.

Bumping one more time with a question, with the problem seemingly having no chance of leaving, whats the recommendation for a non-eircom router? Can I do this? Do I have to tell Eircom this or is it simple plug and replace?

    Hi

You can use your own router on the Eircom network. You do not need to inform them. Just get the settings from the Eircom.net support page. As regards type of router Netgear seems to be getting some good reviews.

Sorry for bringing up an old topic but I firmly believe this problem is due to eircom routing problems. By rebooting your router a new route is possibly established to the IP of the website and can sometimes fix the problem. I've been onto Eircom about this on numerous occasions but it seems to be a very low priority of theirs

I have had similar problem always resolved only temporarily by restoring factory setting on router. I tried other routers d1000 same problem.
Restoring factory setting only resolved for up to 24 hours.

for the first time I fixed the problem by turning off Upnp, immediately when I did this everything started working again. My issue only effected my with certain sites such as rte.ie, speedtest.net, portablenorthpole.tv.

Would be interested to know if this works for anybody else

have tried setting the firewall settings on router to low but hasnt made any diff, they have lowered my profiles from 8mb to 7mb, still no joy...am demented !

I just got this router and found out that if you add a parental control rule to block a certain website, the router blocks a host of other websites along with the website from your rule.

For example, I blocked Reddit.com (too much of a distraction for me) and immediately community.eircom.net won't load (oh the irony). Some other sites load fine. I did not have any rule relating to eircom's website, just reddit. Loads of other stuff wouldn't load either. Disable parental control and community.eircom.net plus those other websites load fine again. Each time parental control is enabled and disabled the sites get blocked and load fine respectively.

However - tumblr.com still won't load with Parental Control on or off, so this won't fix your problem. However it does show that this router has shoddy firmware coding. Disabling parental control might fix problems for people who had it enabled that end up here via google search like I did. Of course, they then can't use it to block stuff...

I can chime in on this:

Same problem (tumblr being the benchmark) for years here: ZyXEL P660 failing to connect to sites like tumblr, wordpress, soundcloud etc. Initially wondered was it something to do with common hosting for these media-based sites: I know Amazon (via AWS) does all tumblr's stuff - not sure about the other problem sites.

Contacted eircom CS: got a fairly competent guy who guided me to "Security > Certificates > Trusted CA" in the ZyXEL interface* and told me that 'over time the router will pick up incorrect certs which will sometimes need to be deleted.' Huh.
Deleting the certs provided the same temporary fix as resetting the device: but back to step 1 within the hour (more likely in ten minutes). Could it be the certs being issued to us are expiring too quickly / not being refreshed quickly enough?

Eircom seem moronically reluctant to supply firmware update details over on the eircom forums: however searching "FTP" with the model number brings up a ZyXEL site with firmware updates** - but the router won't accept them - no idea why. Opening up a TELNET session (as advised by the firmware documentation) doesn't work either as I couldn't find the target dir "RAS".
The doxuments for the firmware updates Did have this to say:

<<Note: There may be firmware that could not be upgraded from Web Configurator. In this case, ZyXEL will prepare special Upload Software for you. Please read the firmware release note carefully when you want to upload a new firmware.>>
...? Have eircom intentionally scuppered this avenue?

    * "192.168.1.254" in your browser, default password "broadband1" in case you're chasing this up
** - apologies, can't post links due to chronic lurking

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but my folks have just recieved this router and the exact same thing is happening. Can't access tumblr, eircom community pages, certain hotel pages. Has there ever been a permanent fix for this (other than getting another router)?

Just a quick update for others who may encounter this, disabling UPnP solved the issue for us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 teafornine

Just logged in to confirm this: disabling UPnP resolved our issue.

Proper explanations welcome! The guy on the phone couldn't say why it worked, but it was one of the many suggestions he was handed.

Can anyone else confirm if they have Upnp devices on their wired network?

The issue for me seems to be related to WDMYCLOUD. DNLA client devices do not seem to cause a problem. Have not completely rules out my SONOS as the source either, however wdmyloud is looking most likely at this stage.

    regards

    Steven

Thanks teafornine I was having the same problem after migrating from Sky I could not access Netflix, booking.com and a good few other sites. Disabled Upnp and now everything works was nearly throwing router out of the window. Cheers mate.

UPnP was activated by default (as it commonly is): to my knowledge, the only UPnP device we have is a WDMyBookLive, and that suffers not-at-all from disabling UPnP.

    Hi,
just want to post to this thread to keep it active as it may help others. I was having many of these problems and seem to have resolved them today by stumbling on this thread and deactivating UPnP. I upgraded my Eir package to a 4MB ADSL subscribtion and received a new ZyXEL device.

First symptom was images, links etc. from e.g. Twitter and Facebook not loading, especially noticeable on e.g. Android devices.

Things then progressed to certain sites not loading, e.g. various VPN providers, our local secondary school website(!)

And in the last month or so, Netflix stopped working.

I initially thought Eir must be throttling certain sites or content.

This all occurred over about a 12 week period.

Disabling UPnP makes *no* sense to me, and the progressive nature of the problem is baffling. I'm reasonably handy with IT, and decided today to take a few hours to google for solutions. I dread to think how less IT literate people would ever stumble across a thread like this.

But, having made the change a few hours ago, all problems of this nature have disappeared.

    So thanks all,

    J

To be honest, it's a joke that this is still happening, but ultimately not surprising with eir.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,615 ✭✭✭✭DrPhilG

    Bump...

Another thank you to Benzino. Been going nuts that I couldn't access Netflix via ps3 for the past few months.

This speeded up a planned upgrade to xbox one today and I was horrifisdto find it doing the same thing.

Cue an epic 3 hour journey around the world and back on Google, culminating in finding the instructions here to disable upnp.

All is well with the world, so worth a bump for anyone else who falls into the same hardship.
