    Did you ask there?

    Yep, the Square, Tallaght!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,401 ✭✭✭Nonoperational

I think it's probably the best €35 I spend every month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,918 ✭✭✭yosser hughes

Why do you think football players get €200k a week?

If you have sky sports, you are paying those wages.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,550 ✭✭✭✭muffler

    Yep, the Square, Tallaght!
I understand that part but did you ask the people there why it was costing €35 a month and why it was a rip off?

Sky Sports should be cheaper! €25 p.m. sounds better!

This tbh. Had a few drinks in the house tonight watching the Leinster match. Even if that's the only match I watch this month (and it won't be) I'd probably have spent the same in the pub!

    Wasn't that game on rte2?

... and those footballers wages are about to get even higher, as $ky hand over even more money to the EPL for the rights.

And of course, their subscription prices are rising too. Gotta pay their wages somehow.

Ha, well, damn. Insert any HC/Amlin match in there then. Last weekend it was worth it!

I could spend €35 easily down the pub watching one game. Of course it's nice to go to the pub too, but with sky sports I get to watch dozens of games and different sports every month, whereas I couldn't afford to go to the pub (cash or heathwise) to see every one of those I watch at home

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

Insolvency advice agencies in the UK are advising people not to cut back on things like Sky Sports, they believe it's preferrable to them spending even more by heading to the pub.

It's only a little over €1 a day for Sky Sports.I doubt I'd get away with watching Newcastle v Sunderland & then Stoke v United at my local for €1.

We also get ESPN thrown in,over in the UK they have to pay extra for it.

Can't wait to hear what the op says next season when BT launch their service on Sky's platform.

If you don't want to pay the money for it then don't.Have a look at the foreign satellite forum for alternatives.

I don't mind the price of the packages too much but what's with the extra for HD.
I have a 47" tv and SD SKY sports looks ****e on it. So €70 a month for **** quality picture.
Prefer watching sport on rte 2 HD on saorview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,550 ✭✭✭✭muffler

I have come to the firm conclusion that if Sky give free HD and free sports to everyone there would still be people complaining. Might be about the sound quality then or a fly on one of the cameras covering a match etc etc

As stated above if you dont think its value for money then dont pay for it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,943 ✭✭✭smcgiff

It's a rip off because it used to be free to air (many moons ago) and it affords wages so that the prem league "players" are prima donnas rather than sportsmen.

    / rant

    ^^This

I love sport as much as the next man...but pay €35 a month...no thanks. I'll watch it online on a stream.

What used to be free to air ? I presume you don't mean the old first division in England to anywhere near the coverage of the premier league now. From memory I think ITV had the rights to show roughly 10 live first division games a season in the late 80's/early 90s. About one a month.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,789 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

While 35 odd Euro for sky sport is a bit steep for any sport fan it's probably not bad value.
Where the rip off is is in charging 30 odd euro more for SD versions of channels mostly available free to air in HD. Suddenly with HD the cost is what now c.75 euro not 35 pm for a decent picture.
I'd probably pay the 35 for sport myself especially during the winter but paying for what's free makes fcuk all sense to me tbh ...

surprised the gaa havent gone down the premiership route with live tv matches at most venues on a weekly basis

That's obvious, they'd lose out on the gate.

Sky Sports isn't where the rip off is, it's the extra for HD is just milking things.

Every Saturday 3pm live game on RTE's sports stadium.

    All channels should be HD.
Tv's are bigger these days so the quality of the picture should be better from sky.

It was 3.30pm,they had to delay coverage to get the rights. Many a Saturday was spent avoiding all media while watching the game 'live' on RTE.

Like it or not, sport is big business these days,we whinge about rip off prices but then we want to see the top players in the EPL.These players need to be paid to attract them.
This argument was trotted out last year when certain TD's (who aren't exactly in the poorhouse) complained about paying for Sky to watch the Heineken Cup.That didn't wash as the counter argument was "lets go FTA & let all the top players leave Irish rugby as clubs/provinces won't be able to pay them top dollar any more.

I honestly don't think Sky is poor value at all. The quality and scale of the coverage is almost uniformly excellent, and it's pitched at sports fans rather than casual viewers, so the analysis is vastly better than what you get from terrestrial stations. I have a Leinster season ticket, but if I had a little more disposable income 35 a month for Super Rugby, football, rugby league, F1, and whatever else might catch my eye would be hard to refuse.

RTE can still bid for the foreign rights to 3pm kickoffs (currently with Sentanta maybe?), that time slot isn't relevant to Sky.

I pay 39.50p/m for all sky channels incl movies and sport, had HD but got rid as difference wasnt that much IMO. I'm quite happy paying that a month as it saves me going to the local as much.

There's either something wrong with your eyes or your telly so.The difference is massive especially on a larger screen.

I got it for 18 mths with no contract. I just cancelled my sub and played chicken with them. They rang me up few days before I was due to be cut off and offered it.

46" screen and 20/20 vision. Just didnt notice a huge difference at all.

As some people have already said in here, if Sky Sports were just €35 a month then it would be good value (especially as we get ESPN). The problem is that is isn't just €35, it's €35 extra. You can't take Sky Sports on its own. You have to at least take the basic package too, which leaves you paying €60ish a month (and the basic package is made up of a lot of FTA channels, which in itself is a rip-off, but that's for another thread). And there's no HD included. Adding HD pushes it up to €75ish a month. That's money I spend primarily to watch sports as most of my other watching is FTA channels. I definitely consider that to be too expensive, but I pay it because it's better than having to go to the pub. Oh, and I don't really buy the "you'd spend more in the pub" argument. How much anyone spends in the pub is upto themselves. You could very easily watch games in the pub for less than a monthly Sky sports sub if you had to.

My main issue with Sky Sports is that they take sports away from the FTA channels. With their enormous spending power, other broadcasters can't compete. Personally, I really miss the heineken cup matches on rte (and some of the Ireland soccer matches too). And as a big F1 fan, I always make a point of watching it on BBC whenever they have it live.

Then you're doing it wrong, connected by scart maybe? You need a HDMI cable for HD.

    There is a massive difference

I know how to connect it, in fact it's still connected with hdmi from when I had it. Each to their own I guess.

It's the best €35 or whatever it costs I spend on a monthly basis.

The HD cost is a pain in the hole though.

You should watch 3e or Channel 5 for a few days, you'll be crying out for HD after that.

Anyone paying €15 a month for HD should give Sky a ring, they were giving offers of €5 a month for it.No harm in asking.

Sky Sports...... 4 packets of fags a month.

    Well worth it.

Most of that money goes to pay a man playing in a foreign soccer league.

€24.60 a month for UK customers. €35 a month for Irish customers.
That's a rip off, or does it cost extra for the satellite to beam a signal to us.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,217 ✭✭✭✭B.A._Baracus

    Sky is a rip off.

35 euro is not alot for sports. But most people will get the Entertainment package too which is 27 euro. So suddenly it's €62 euro a month and that is alot!

I can't speak for the sky of now, but about 10 years ago my dad just wanted to get the sports channels in. He was told that you have to get the basic entertainment package in order to get the sports  It's a rip off.

Especially today when there are freesat and saorview.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,709 ✭✭✭✭Cantona's Collars

    Sky is a rip off.

Especially today when there are freesat and saorview.

No live EPL,Heineken Cup etc. on freesat/saorview. No dedicated docu channels,no Sky Atlantic.

I personally know someone who won't pay for Sky as it's a "rip off" but spends nearly €30 a week on dvds.

Everyone has a choice, pay for tv or don't.Personally there's very little content on FTA that I'm actually interested in.ITV is a load of me hole,BBC does have some quality along with Channel 4 but most is rubbish. If I had to put up with that I'd be torrenting 24/7.

€2 a day for something to watch isn't bad when you think of it.

Neither does Sky these days unless dumbed down "reality" rubbish counts as documentaries.
