    possibly ben done before.

But from what I gather its more of a personal preference thing, rather than it's kind of obvious to refridgerate heineken, Miller etc

have a slab of Guinness here, not sure what's "best practice"

PS - obviously best practice is get off the internet and go drink them.

If it's a slab of cans then yes, refrigerate them and serve chilled. Unchilled beer out of a can doesn't work.

Guinness is best at room temperature out of the glass bottle.

Every single drink, alcoholic or otherwise is nicer when cold.

With the exception of teas and coffees, and even some of them are nicer cold.

I actually think Guinness tastes nicer when closer to room temperature.

They only taste better because you can't taste them! Cold numbs your taste buds.

Good beer should be drunk at room temp, so you get to taste all the alcoholic goodness :)

"Off the shelf" is nice for a large bottle, I'll leave them in the shed some winters - perfect temperature!

    Yes.

Guinness draught always tastes best when served chilled, even in a pub.

    Well, for me anyway.

Never had a problem with warm beer, don't get all this refrigeration lark.

Guinness cans never taste good. fine for cooking, that's about it. if you must stoop to Guinness, get a bottle, otherwise get a nice Irish stout like dungarvan, oharas, porterhouse etc...

The correct serving temperature for Guinness is between four and six degrees celcius. This is slightly above what it is in your normal household fridge.

I personally believe that this is still too cold, and that it tastes far better closer to ten or twelve. Guinness out of a cold fridge or beer tap is not nice at all.

Very popular here in Waterford. I'd say for every cold bottle of Guinness I sell, I'd sell at least 5/6 off the shelf.

I think one of the greatest injustices which occurred in the Western world at the end of the last century was the introduction of the "extra cold" Guinness. It was the drink served at a temperature which proscribed any attempt to taste it; as was mentioned earlier on this thread, if a beverage is very cold it is almost impossible to taste because the cold impinges upon the taste buds.

Guinness may be an acquired taste but the shameful affront to those who actually went to the trouble to acquire it was another step on the inevitable road to hell which we, as a society, should never forget.

The only beers that taste better when cold are those that taste like piss to begin with, imo.

You can probably consume more beer if you drink it cold, which is what companies want at the end of the day; hence all the 'best served chilled' malarkey.

I'm drinking beer at the moment and it was too cold when it came out of the fridge so I let it warm up and it's purfect now. And it's yum.

Am I the only one who finds guinness a bit bland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

    Beamish is nicer.

    I'm telling y'all 10 - 12 degrees is optimum. It's UK cellar temp.

Yup I remember starting boozing in 1992 and Guinness was never served really cold. Then they brought in the "Exta Cold" taps and after a while they disappeared.... apparently.
What had really happened was they started serving all Guinness as "Extra cold" but didn't advertise it as such.
I like it out of a pint bottle off the shelf because it's not a bad drink, but on draught? Can't taste the bloody stuff anymore. :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,431 ✭✭✭Sky King

Extra cold was one of many failed guinness products around then, including Breo, Guinness Light and the Guinness Brewhouse series.

Guinness might be a bit bland for some, I usually would only go for it if I wanted a change from another beer.

I think the question of chilling drinks is more pertinent to spirits: I'll only drink vodka at home after it has been in the freezer for a few hours, it turns from a vicious stinking fluid into a beautiful syrupy ambrosia. I don't like the idea of vodka if it isn't chilled to the point where it flows like honey.

Exactly! It is so injust! And another reminder that we must always be vigilant against the forces that would tell us things haven't changed; and that we must always be aware of how tenuous our grasp on the truth truly is!

Nope, it's about a bland a beer as you can get really, completely lacking in any flavour, especially the draught. Compared to some of the other stouts on the market, it's a poor reflection of the style.

Guinness Export, on the other hand, is delightful

Its the most watery stout I think. Beamish has a noticably stronger flavour.

You should be able to taste things better when they're slightly warmer like around 10 degrees. Its the same with cereal, they tell you to use ice cold milk in the ads so you wont notice so much that you're eating scraps of cardboard
