At the start of the year I posted about my bangernomics thread inspired primera 1.8 that I picked up for €600... had a full service history, nct, tax, low mileage etc.

Haven't had one bit of hassle with it since, done nearly 20k since then. And just passed the nct till feb 2015 first go! I changed a cv boot, top links, front tires and a parking bulb. Expecting it to fail on something, flew through. Gotta love bangernomics!

Very very nice work :D:D I know Primeras aren't everyones cup of tea - but 20,000 miles and flying through NCT to take you to 2015 - for 600 euro is the business.

Better then any modern diesel :) - job done

As far as value for money, probably the best purchase I've ever made :D
And because they aren't everyone's cuppa, they can be picked up cheap. Great handling, cheap and plentiful parts, cheap insurance, comfortable, easy to diy maintain. €600, can't go wrong! The first pics were from when I got it, this is her today 20k on.

    02-Primera
    NCT - 06/2014
    700 - asking

    Inspired by MIMM's primera....:)

It's a bargain for sure, but not a very good car at all. The P10 / P11 were much better in every way!

NCT expiring in January is hardly better than having no test at all! Tell the seller to get it tested first if you're interested in buying :)

My uncle had one of those early primeras for years and never a bit of bother with it. My father had an 02 facelift primera the 1.6 and had no end of trouble with it. He was back to the dealer he bought it from loads of times. Mainly due to the poor gearbox and high fuel comsumption issues it had. Speaking with taxi drivers they all encountered problems with them. So steer clear.

Yeah my dad had a Primera during the 90s. Bulletproof!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,668 ✭✭✭✭vectra

Had a 00 one of those primeras for nearly 4 years I'd say.
Nice and comfy and eco enough.
Above all. a big fat "0" issues with it. Bombproof.
    It was the 1.6.
    Are the 1.8 as reliable?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 59,578 ✭✭✭✭unkel

I think they were both as reliable. Had a '95 1.6 myself in the late 90s. Was not as reliable as it could have been, had some electrical issues (battery / alternator) but they were relatively minor. Better drivers car than most d-segment Japanese cars at the time, hell even better than some European cars. Nice spec too (had an SLX) with ABS, everything electric (incl. antenna :D)

Ya they are, and feck all difference mpg wise, 1.8 has a bit more low down torque. 116lb.ft @2800 vs 100lb.ft@4000 (i owned a 1.6 primera before this one)

Jeez, after reading all this good reviews I'm thinking of getting myself a good old Primera and than save a bit more and upgrade to Luxobarge...:D

Is it a timing chain or a belt on the 1.8 Primeras???

Always thought the 1.8 had a belt - but heard mention of a 1.8 Almera (same engine???) on another forum and the impression was give that it had a chain.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 338 ✭✭m-i-m-m-

Its a chain, prone to stretching if the oil isn't changed when it should be. Change the oil as it should be and there hassle free.

Them primeras were reliable but not uber reliable or bulletproof Imo. As you say they suffer from small faults. Things such as the starter, alternator, distributer and on fuel injected models, Fuel pump failure ( over100k miles). In fairness though the fuel pump was a common failure on most nissans of that era, even jap built nissans.

Other Things however such as the starter, alternator and distributer fail because of inadequate quality from the outside European manufacturers of the components.

The micra built in the same factory suffers from similar faults as the ones listed above but the Jap built Nissans of the time such as the sunny and almera are far more reliable with regards to those components.

The primeras also suffer from wear in the steering components which sometimes have to be replaced quiet often.

    Clean looking 1.8 primera
Sports trim so alloys, semi buckets, fogs, colour coded skirts, elec sunroof + mirrors, central locking etc
    Nct till June
    67,000 miles
    €1250

If it could be haggled down to €900 or 1000 would be worth it.
Bet its been sitting there for a while, with little or no interest.

We are, but the newer ones are nissan/renault hybrids. French+car = trouble! Handle like a boat too. Saying that they can be picked up cheap and you could get lucky. I wouldn't take a chance with one myself.

Renault ruined Nissan, then again Nissan probably would of gone the same way as mg rover if it wasn't for Renault.

    2001 Audi A8 Quattro
    2.8 Petrol
    148k Miles
    NCT 2/14
    €1395
Admittedly with only 3 months NCT left its not perfect, but pending an inspection it might turn out a good buy.
