It's been used so long it's now obsolete.

The people you hear saying it need to move on.

    YOLO!

Dubs should stick to their native dialect, which is of course Cockney rhyming slang!

thats a Cork phrase, I used to hear it all the time when I lived there.
'Its safe out', or 'your sound out'

Surely "lad" is much better than "mate" which also seems to be on the ascendency in Dublin these days.

Thought "lad' was a carrot cruncher thing?

It means take out yer Mickey and Waggle it at Strangers in the Street

Lad is slang for penis where I'm from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Far too informal for Pighead's liking. When people who barely know you call you 'lad' or 'mate' it's enough to make this poster turn green with rage. Think we should actively encourage people to start using the term 'sir' more. Nothing better than being called sir.

I've been hearing people say 'happy out' for years. It's definitely not a new thing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 97 ✭✭limitedIQ

I've always used "alright, lad" when I forget someones name.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,184 ✭✭✭✭Pighead

Wonder did it originate in the gay community ie when somebody 'came out' they declared they were happy out.

Interesting theory Pighead. Could be bang on the money there sir.

Lad is midlands slang AFAIK, but yes I have also heard it being used by Dubs and urbanites lately.

A lot of slang swap stems from the universities, where people are more informal and playful with language and are in close contact with diverse regional accents and expressions for long hours.

When I started college a lot of my friends remarked they started using Kerry expressions because I sometimes use the word 'like' once in a while (every three words, like). Similarly I have picked up lots of their expressions over the years, aye.

Using the term "lad" is part of my everyday lexicon. Very common in my neck of the woods.

Still, prefer an Irish "lad" to use the term "lad" than to go all American with the terms "man" or "dude".

I've noticed "man" has started to be used more frequently now though *shakes fist*

Very much doubt that pal. Your name is nonsensical. It is also an anagram of 'NO BREASTS' which makes Pighead dislike it even more. There should always be breasts. Always.

I thought you wanted to call everyone 'sir'.....and then you go and spoil the idea by saying 'pal' :(

Anagram for Pighead= Hag pied............ Who ate all the pies, lad?

SNORBEAST is not worthy of the sir greeting. Barely worthy of pal but Pighead gave him a pass as it's Friday. Hope that clears it up sir.

It sure does sir, thank you for the clarification and tbh I tend to also use the word 'pal' when talking to someone I dislike. Sarcasm of the highest order!

cringe inducing slang used by mongo's

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,925 ✭✭✭✭anncoates

Only recently have i noticed :)Dubs calling each other Lad ,?

I've heard it in the pub once or twice but it's usually in the context of mongos letting their internal Mancunian or Scouser all hang out during the TV games.

"Happy out" is a turnip muncher phrase and is particularly horrid when used by a GAA jersey clad female.

    *shudder*

People in Carlow have been saying 'lad' for years. I used to work with someone about fifteen years ago that called me 'lad' more often than he referred to me by my name. It was annoying.

What I find more annoying though is Irish people using words like 'mate' and 'bloke'.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,101 ✭✭✭Weathering

Alright lad is very common in Donegal. I must admit I've never heard a Dub say it and can't picture it ha
