    Hey everyone,

I am sick 28 year old, which effects my muscles, soft tissue and tendons and have chronic pain ranging from headaches down to my knees. Also I have pretty low energy levels, I find it extremely difficult to get out and exercise or even go walking. my diet is pretty healthy. Usually breakfast consists of fruit, strawberries, blueberries, apple, melon, and grapes. Glass of juice and coffee. Mid morning snack of yoghurt /go ahead car. Lunch usually a salad or salad wrap. Lettuce, cucumber, cheese, spring onion, radish, meat and sometimes egg. dinner is one potato, vegetables and meat or fish. Drink around 2 litre 's of water a day.

Being unable to exercise in the past few months, I am getting rounded at the edges and I am wondering can whey protein help in any way. I know it's real good for people working out with weights. My eating is healthy, so need some advice on how lose maybe 7-10 lbs in the next 6 weeks. If anyone can give me advice, appreciate it as I can't exercise, so need help in relation to knowing if whey protein would help and what kind etc.if protein isn't the answer then what is?
    Thanks

fidelma - Sorry to hear about your illness.

Whey protein, although often mis-sold is purely for folk's who want to get a certain level of protein into their diet and cannot do so through normal food intake alone. ( it also has some benefits in its ease of use etc compared to cooking a steak after the gym )

People looking to lose weight etc have 0 business taking it.

In order to lose weight without doing exercise, eat fewer calories than you expend, end of.

I suggest you do this by looking at your diet and seeing where you can cut unnecessary low nutrition calories ( bread and sugar are examples ).

    finally read the stickies
    best of luck

Hey Fidelma, sorry to hear about your condition I hope it clears up soon for you.

Please don't go near meal replacement shakes, they contain mostly rubbish ingredients. By the looks of what you have listed you eat a mostly whole foods and this is exactly what you need. As mentioned earlier think about reducing your calories a bit and perhaps track your daily nutrition for a few days and see where you can make adjustments. Post up here if you need a hand.
Your condition sounds very restrictive, would it be possible for you to walk in a pool or do a vary gentle form of yoga.

Some herbs such as tumeric and ginger might be worth looking into

    cheers

unless you have certain dairy allergies or serious kidney problems then yes its fine, whey is just a by-product of cheese processing with high protein content.

Don't touch that crap. That's just a gimmick for people who are too lazy to eat healthily and/or exercise.

Exercising is not necessary to lose weight. Weight loss is dependent on diet. Exercise can help burn calories and tone but a healthy diet is all you need.

No mad science to weight loss...you need to burn more calories than you consume. Simple as.

You could use one of the calorie tracking apps to determine what your average daily calorie intake is. You will probably discover certain aspects of your diet that are highly calorific unbeknownst to yourself.

Portion control is another issue that may need to be looked at perhaps.

Talk to your doctor. No medical advices allowed here.

Meal replacement shakes CAN be a good way of losing weight, despite what people say, you just have to choose the right ones and make sure they have low sugar, high protein and high fibre, etc. Consult your doctor or a nutritionist before doing this though. You could also try eating foods like cottage cheese, lean chicken/turkey fillets, porridge, vegetables, salmon, tuna, etc.

Did you check the ingredients on the one you linked? Are they the right ones?

its sells for £100 for 849g equals14 servings.
Maltodextrin, skim milk powder, milk protein concentrate, inulin, soya oil powder [soya oil, vegetable fat, whey powder (from milk) , milk protein, soya lecithin, antioxidants (E304, E307), stabiliser (E451), anticaking agent (E341)], fructose, soya protein isolate, dairy creamer (glucose syrup, coconut oil, caseinate, dipotassium phosphate, lecithin, mono and diglycerides of fatty acids), tripotassium citrate, vanilla flavouring, potassium phosphate, thickeners (carboxymethyl cellulose, xanthan gum), sodium chloride, trisodium citrate, magnesium oxide, fish oil powder (fish oil, glucose syrup, mannitol, caseinate, soya protein, sodium ascorbate, tetrasodiumdiphosphate, lecithin, tricalcium phosphate, natural flavour, tocopherol rich extract), Vitamin C (ascorbic acid), sweetener (sucralose), vitamin K (K2 as menaquinone-7), iron (ferrous fumarate), zinc gluconate, Vitamin E (dl-alpha tocopheryl acetate), manganese gluconate, Niacin (niacinamide), copper gluconate, vitamin A acetate, Pantothenic acid (calcium D-pantothenate), Biotin (D-biotin), Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride), folic acid, Vitamin D (cholecalciferol), Riboflavin (riboflavin 5’-phosphate sodium), Thiamin (thiamine hydrochloride), chromium picolinate, Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin), potassium iodide, sodium molybdate, sodium selenite.

No they can't. Why would eating a "meal replacement" chocolate bar or a strawberry milkshake be better than eating a healthy meal.

They are crap designed for lazy people to yoyo diet.

Yes, they can. Don't be so ignorant. Look up the facts about them. I didnt say they would be better for you than eating a healthy meal, but sometimes its not easy for people to eat healthy meals all the time because they quite often dont taste very good. The girl who started this post was just asking for advice on how to lose weight because she is having problems with it, I just suggested this as an option. If you can find good shakes with good ingredients, they're worth a try.

They are not worth a try really though as they are not sustainable. You look up the facts about them. The one you linked to, it's primary ingredient is maltodextin: basically sugar.

Healty food tastes bad? What? It doesn't have to.

That is total non-sense. Since when does healthy food not taste good?

Not everyone has the same taste as you, some people mightn't like the same foods that you like. One of the reasons that people are overweight is because they prefer the taste of food that is bad for them such a processed food, fast food, etc.

Is that one of the reasons? Lol

I think the reasons are eating too much, laziness, not enough exercise, and luck of education.

It's all down to taste though and your solution is a sugar crap filled MRP. If you want an MRP I would make my own

LEW, whey powder, oats, flax oil, olive oil, nut butters etc.

Keep control if the macros and tailor to suit.

Fat people prefer the taste of unhealthy food as it is laced with salt, sugars and flavour enhancers which you do not find in healthy food. However there is enough variety of healthy meals out there for people to choose from that would mean they don't have to resort to eating junk.

To say healthy food doesn't taste good is non-sense.

You can adapt your tastes back again to preferring the healthier stuff

I never said that healthy food doesnt taste good, I said that people who have problems with their weight often prefer the taste of unhealthy food. Do you honestly think that overweight people dont become overweight by eating unhealthy food? If healthy food tasted great to everyone then everyone would eat it, wouldnt they?

OP what condition do you have? you mentioned having a lot of pain. Inflammation is often a cause of pain and controlling this inflammation can help ease the pain in some circumstances. Omega 3 and Curcumin are the two products I would suggest.

    Christ, what an awful thread.
OP, at this point your question has been lost in complete nonsense.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,739 ✭✭✭Naos

Step 1: Figure out how many calories you need per day to maintain current weight.

Step 2: Eat a little less than required (assuming you're eating healthy).
