Gym on a budget

    Hey all,

I'm currently in a gym and about to leave due to costs, I'm currently out of work and struggling financially, The gym is the only really "luxury" outgoing I have, apart from that all my money goes on food, rent and transport. So I've been hesitant but I'm struggling so looking for any recommendations on something cheaper.
I have been paying €50 a month, I don't have money to pay an up front lump sum for the year so its per month meaning it works out at €600 a year.
I have tried to talk to them about rates but they didn't come across very helpful.

Ideally I'd like somewhere city centre or close to it on the southside. I have seen a few places between €20 - €30 a month, and some PAYG gyms.
It's either something cheap or just stay at home doing BW stuff, but like I said this is the only thing I do for me, probably the only thing keeping me sane tbh.

    Can anyone recommend something?

Check out Ben Dunne Jervis Street gym...its fairly cheap as gyms go (200 for 12 months). I don't know about how busy it gets. I am in his gym in Lucan and the equipment is all top notch, the pics suggest Jervis is too. The shower facilities in Lucan aren't great as in there isn't many showers. No pool facilities if you need that...

New gyms opening up, i believe 'fitness 4 all' if i got that right are opening in Tallaght shortly and its 24.99 per month.

    Look around for offers.

    OR

Buy some secondhand equipment and do it yourself.

It's a chain owned by Energie fitness called Fit 4 Less opening in Tallaght, it's going to be a good gym from what I've seen.

There is lots you can do with a chinupbar and a set of gymnastic rings. However you will probably want to be getting outside too, there are plenty of parks about with equipment nowadays, and if you look around there maybe structures you can do chinups or dips on, e.g. overhanging ledges, tree branches, railings.

I used have a route cycling along the coast, going down to a swimming area with things I can do chins & dips on, and going swimming the odd time.

Also check this thread where people are meeting up in parks for workouts.

You can exercise at home - see this thread for ideas: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056185716
Or go for a run outside.

I use Ben Dunne in Sandyford and it meets my needs very well. Free parking too.

I was in UCD for years (even before it was Crunch) but they have priced themselves out of the market.

Flyefit on Baggot street opened recently. Less than 30 euro a month (not sure of exact price) no contract.

But since a few options are out there why not give the bodyweight exercises a try first?

That depends on what you want to do.

Why what do you want that BW training doesn't offer?

BW training offers balance/flexibility/strength/muscle.....and learn some cool looking moves too.

I am not slating weight training by any means but BW training offers everything an average gym go-er would look for.

You should come to one of our calisthenics training sessions and try it out. It's free, your only limited by your own ability and you certainly won't be bored. You never know you might enjoy trying something new.

Except running hill intervals on a treadmill when it is snowing outside.

1+ for the Ben Dunne gym in Sandyford - it really is fantastic, it doesn't have a pool, but I can't swim, so it doesn't bother me (and that's all that counts, eh! ;):p )
