Nice to know to its not just the welfare tourists we have to watch out for . Sick to the stomach at the pitiful sentence he got though, 16 months = out in 6 months most likely. As a manager/senior civil servant and with a Blackrock address, I'm sure he was very well paid. Anyone know if he still gets his pension?

Edit: Missed the part where it says he is entitled to his pension.
''None of the money has been repaid but there is a procedure in place where the Department can reclaim the money from King’s pension when it mature''

He did wrong got punished, what else is there to say, he has lost his job and is in prison.

I kept expecting to read the two words - suspended sentence. Shocked he got a custodial sentence.

    Well done, judge.

Boards should ban these threads, they are always people sniping at the government and begrudging everyone who has to get any form of assistance.

I'm worse for clicking into them.

I should be banned as well.

He was overpaying the punters, then "catching" them and pocketing the rebate. He'll make a nice ladyboy for some of the longer term inmates.

Mine had way more rabble than that.

Boredom and I already had a **** today.

I forgot my interest meter had to be at 7 to post in a thread but the truth is, I just want to get my post count up to be part of the gang.

Did he lose his job, or is he on unpaid leave / career break while in jail?

    He was sacked.

How long did he spend suspended on full pay until they fired him?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,106 ✭✭✭catallus

Am I right in saying that it was only uncovered when one of the people he was shaking down wrote a letter to the department? Do they have such little idea of what money they are paying out that a mid-level manager can do this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 269 ✭✭schnitzelEater

Did he charge them penalties and interest or just ask for the overpayment back? If not, he has much to learn.

    Read the link!

Letter was anonymous, no details on exactly when he was sacked.

His pension contributions remain, department can recoup money from that when he reaches retirement age.

I wonder has he gone through the appeals process yet? He might still be in with a shout of keeping the job.

    I'm not a seer! :p

He was sacked, admitted guilt and is now in prison. So I doubt he has any grounds to appeal.

Shouldn't get to keep his pension imo,he abused his power and threathened genuine welfare recipients with loss if benefits of they didn't give the money back to him.

I agree he should not keep his pension, maybe refund him some of what he has paid in but then cancel his pension.

probably as long as they presumed he was innocent?

The report says he made "large overpayments" over a "one year period".

Maybe the whistleblower was unhappy with their cut, looked for an increase and when King refused they decided to crash the bus.

Blind speculation, but if the letter was anonymous, it would add up.

He should serve his sentence and pay back what he owes. Not lose the whole pension.

There should also be fines as is usual for fraud cases.

Fines usually accompany tax evasion cases where the sum owed plus a fine are repaid and life carries on.

Prison + repayment of money + fines is going overboard.

lol. Maybe he could be redeployed to some clerical officer role in the prison service- or maybe he could be a prison officer? Couldn't possibly sack a civil servant- how will he pay his mortgage on his investment properties?

    ;)

"None of the money has been repaid but there is a procedure in place where the Department can reclaim the money from King’s pension when it matures." That's from the IT report.

    Why is it going overboard?

Garda Tracey agreed with counsel that King was “glad to be caught” and that he is unlikely to reoffend.

Would you ever go and ... :pac:
"glad to be caught" - like he wrestled with his conscience? ffs, he scammed the money, got caught, thats it.

I presume you're referring to my post?

I mean that taking away his WHOLE pension leaving him with no income for the rest of his life, as well as serving time in prison would be going overboard.

It would seem they were under pressure staff wise, what with the collapse in property and retail at the time, demand nearly trebled. With a company you'd be looking to at least double staff, not cut numbers.

Still, somebody should be checking stuff like this, whether it is internal or external auditors. Wonder how he did it as a lot of payments is standard, maybe part time workers and saying they worked less than they claimed for.
