Would your profession be of any use if you were trapped on a desert island?

If you were trapped on a desert island with a small group of people would the skills you use in your job be of any use? Would they help yourself and the group to survive?

I'm unemployed at the moment :( but I used to be a horse trainer. That would be of absolutly no use, though I would be used to roughing it a bit I suppose! :pac:

It depends. Would there be a computer on the desert island?

No, my profession would be utterly useless, but I like camping and I can make fire so they might let me live in a Lord of the Flies type scenario, because I'd be useful.

I had a job picking apples when I was younger. So if there was apple trees on the island, I'd be sorted

As a programmer I could put the numbers into the computer that stops the island blowing up. No, thr answer is no.

As a programmer, not directly, but I'd like to think my problem solving abilities might come in handy.

I've a Fine Art degree so ye're sorted for nice pictures of sunsets / sunrises etc.
I'm also an alcoholic chain smoker so consider me a potential liability (unless its an island with wild cannibis growing and a functioning distillery).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,041 ✭✭✭Seachmall

This island is going to be flooded with programmers and other IT people.

If there were any Gnus or Pythons on the island I'd be able to lend a hand in putting them to use though.

Depends what operating system the island is running on, if it's Macintosh then no.

I can build a circuit and program a light to flash on and off. That seems useful if I get SOS in morse code.

Both of my occupations/professions would be of potential use should desert island trapping become a significant factor in my ongoing life living activities

one would be v.useful if I was trapped on my own or with others

one would probably be only useful if others were trapped with me (this one is not pornstar )

Our plans are for a large island with millions of zombies, I imagine we'd have a small island cleared by lunch time. Thats if we don't want to use the zombies as a renewable energy source.

I'm an electronic engineer who loves electronics and computers as a hobby as well - so I definitely could whip up some distress signals with whatever junk was lying around from the ship or plane.

I dunno, if there was an engineer, carpenter, etc. in the group psychologists would definitely be appearing further up the menu than them. :D

And in answer to the OP, no it wouldn't, so I'd probably be on the menu as well. :(

If we were to believe rumours well then it might be said that I work in the distillery business from time to time :p
Im sure I could get a little market going in no time at all. The blonde girls would be well sorted with the vodka, its the auld brunettes that would have to really work for it :D

But of course thats only if the rumours are true ;)

If we're just taking about professional skills, then no.

If we're talking about life skills, then the answer is still no.

Being an actor that appeared as an extra on LOST, the only thing my profession would bring would be a TV show that became a victim of it's own success, ran for too many seasons and had a general inconclusive, disappointing ending.
