    The petition doesn't mention the start button, only the aero glass effects. And given the computing power that it required, it's an utterly pointless bit of eye-candy. In Vista and 7, I always turned the transparency off straight away, made the OS run much faster

    Aero =/= Start menu.

    If you want the start menu back, ClassicShell will sort you out. There's no sane reason for wanting Aero Glass back given the impact it has on performance, and I for one welcome its demise.

    Windows 8 is an operating system optimised for touch screens if you want the start menu and aero effects just install Windows 7

    I presume there's no free downgrade, so a bit pricey to get a start button.

    I say again, if you just want the Start button and don't want to spend money, install ClassicShell.

    No, it's not as good as MS acknowledging the desire for this function within the OS as a native function. But it's better than nothing, and actually gets you what you want (which I am pretty damn sure some silly petition on change.org will not).

    Not just a first-world problem, but a first-world problem that's already been solved.

    I have Windows 8,

    Installed startisback, which is great. $1 for the license (must buy 3; you can try free for 30 days).

    You would honestly forget your using Windows 8, boots straight to the desktop, and the start button, search bar, start bar etc are exactly the same.

    Happy so far (4 days in).

    will laugh when 8SP1 somes with classic menus option

    the whole UI change is a necessary step in hardware progression though. To touch, that is.

    Theres just not anything about it I missed enough to pay money to have it back.

    The UI is fine on touch-enabled devices. Forcing a touch-enabled UI onto an OS which you then make available on non-touch-enabled devices is a bit silly. I'm not wedded to the old UI, but I don't like the experience of the touch UI with KB + mouse enough to not want the choice.

    Just use classic shell if you want the start menu. No petitions needed, theres plenty of different programs out there to restore the Start menu again. Windows 8 is great

    I can't be the only one here that prefers the Alt+x menu / search to the old start menu?
    (right click in bottom left corner).
    The "Immersive" app interface can feck off though in it's current state.

    (Don't knock Compiz Fusion. I'm pretty sure that it was it rather than the CV that got me one job).
