No thread on it yet so may as well get it started.
    Linky -> http://www.balbriggancc.ie/race-weekend-2013.html

Starts at 4 on a bastard of a circuit. Mostly flat with a pox of a climb at the end and disaster corner just before it.
Tea,Coffee,Sambo's and BBQ in till the early hours of Sunday Beasty's Demense afterwards.

Change of circuit this year, some pretty crap roads and blind chicane (at the foot of a descent) added. pity because the old circuit was great.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

Yeah Glen just noticed that change of circuit. Thats a tough circuit!
Although from KM6 to KM7 has been resurfaced (as I was up there last week) which is a good job as its a long fast slightly downhill section.

They've turned that into a nightmare of a course. It's longer which may help the handicaps, but the approach up to Man 'O War is a lousy bit of road, and that "chicane" is lethal, coming at the bottom of a fast descent.

Think I'll be out with the camera rather than bike on Saturday

Agree totally. There will be carnage at that corner/bend.

I find those bends scary enough when on my own - you can easily get over 60kph on the descent but would have to reduce to less than 30 to get round those bends (and even then you're cutting across the first one)

Isn't that the descent when you couldn't keep up with me crashed "came off in appalling conditions" a few years ago???

I can't imagine there's a Strava segment for the full circuit, but the segment with the chicane was removed as hazardous - a guy was almost killed in a collision with a motor vehicle there a couple of years ago

We used that segment as part of a club race circuit some years ago and it was frightening. Almost impossible to stay on the left side of the road at speed.

is it turn left after the pub down the worst descent in ireland and left to main road back up to the pub?

I loved this raced never had much success in it but it was a super fast race all the drags big ring.

... there should hopefully be one up later this evening

(assuming I slow down quickly enough on the descent;))

Must pop up and have a look at this as its on my doorstep. Would be concerened about the use of Darcystown Road (From 6 to 7), unless its been resurfaced lately the last time went down there i struggled .........and i was in the car!

Just back from 2 recce laps where I came across a big lank of a Yorkshire lad (who went into great detail about how intends to single handeldly pull us out of recession) who was doing a strava for it.
Came across 2 Marshalls sweeping the corner at km6 who smiled and said ' its not as easy as last year'
A very tough circuit and I would have serious concerns about the chicane as the inside line is unrideable. A fast moving bunch coming through there is asking for trouble.

Yes. Thats the one. It happened right after we stopped and I took your advice to let some air outta my tyres. The only way you can keep up with me on a descent is by forcing me to crash.

    There you go
Not the right start/finish, but there is a tree in the middle of the road at the right turn before the junction where the segment does start!

Particularly as there is a pothole right in the middle of the first bend

Ah, the tree in the road. Part of the killalane road race circuit? Only in ireland could u have a tree in the middle of the track :)

The thing about that is ,in reality , in order for a group to get through safely they will have to go on the wrong side of the road.

It was the same time last year IIRC, but around lunchtime the year before that

I think it's aimed at minimising recovery time for the really tough races on Sunday ;)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭colm_gti

Not that the late start would put me off massively, depending on how I'm fixed I might do both of them.

Will there be a restriction on numbers if the road is as bad as ye say?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,460 ✭✭✭lennymc

im hoping to get dropped take part in both of them

It's now the Swords GP course with an extra bit bringing you to the finish climbing the Nag's Head from the north.

oh, so it's not as climby? Got a map of the new course at all? I enjoyed last year's edition, although it was only my second or third race so wasn't really able for the pace. Was looking forward to making a go of it this year, but maybe I'll save the powder for Stamullen.

Plan was to do some track stuff on Saturday, and skip the Harry Reynolds (reinforced by the danger comments above), and lash through the Ben McKenna.

Anyone know why Ollie and the boys decided to change everything, the weekend particularly the harry was getting to be one of the irish classics ?

Heard they were having a hard time with the local constabulary but that mightn't have anything to do with it.

There was a FCC road crew up at the Palmerstown section this morning half-heartly throwing tarmac into holes. They didn't seem to have a whacker plate with them (a few pats with the back of a shovel instead) with the result that half the fill was being dragged up by passing traffic.

Beasty great shot and a great win for Nulty. In my opinion he should have been elsewhere today like the U23 Flanders.Has better form than most of the team that went. Also he's only 20 this year and has this year and 2 more as an U23.Cant understand why he wasn't considered to be honest.

Have a fair idea tbh but he has stepped up this year. This is his 3rd win in the past 3 weeks.Just think he's ''outside the radar'' at the moment and it does no harm to throw in a little reminder.Thats all.

    wav1 Harry
Reynolds race 50k Versus 169km gruelling kilometres of the Tour of Flanders U23 edition. not such a great comparison is it?
I do agree that Javan is riding well though.

Wasn't making any comparisons between the races.
Just saying that in fairness to the rider he has better form than certainly a few of the lads who did go.And he did very well over many gruelling kilometres in ras mumhan.Just think that sometimes riders just go unnoticed, but in fairness to morana,id say he will be back in the loop soon.

Javan Nulty is in great form and looks a great prospect for the future. Those U23 races are serious events though and if he's just turned 20 I doubt a Tour of Flanders would do him any favours. Throwing riders in at the deep end can work well for some and cause big issues for others. Great to have good riders pushing for places.

Javan is a 2nd yr senior ie he is 20 this year
3 of the Irish team today are first yr seniors ie 19 this yr
2 are 2nd year senior as is Javan,so I dont see the logic there tbh.
I also agree its great to be looking AT riders rather than looking FOR them, but I just feel with the form he has at present, and the winter training in warmer climates he at least should be in the mix for these teams. He def has stepped up a notch.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 851 ✭✭✭GlennaMaddy

New course wasn't as bad as I had feared, tough but not a pure climbers course , new uphill finish was more uphill than the uphill finish that shuangil might remember before he hung up his wheels :D
