The right move. For my money though I can't see us hitting grand slams every year or winning the world cup any time soon no matter who the coach is.. but a change is as good as a rest and all that.

    Thanks for the Grand Slam.

Now onto the future, hopefully that doesn't involve Kiss being crowned as the Irish Coach after the summer tour.

The Irish Rugby Football Union today announced that it will not be offering a new contract to Declan Kidney after his current agreement ends (on June 30th next), with Declan's role as Ireland's senior men's coach ceasing today.

That is what it says anyway.

He's still in contract though. His role is all that has changed today.

He hasn't been sacked, so anyone reporting that is incorrect.

    Cue Kidney removal jokes!

Sad to see him go he got the best out of the team before the players lost it

i too can't see any coach winning a grand slam or a WC with the team as it stands.

He'll always be remembered for the Grand Slam and luckily not the 2013 6 Nations. Thanks for that Decci

he brought the side as far as he could. fair play to him. Thanks for your part in the grand slam, and best of luck in whatever club you find yourself

Mixed feelings, had high regards for Kidney but he's days were numbered once the performances were as they were. Delighted he got the Grand Slam, it was long overdue and probably should have been won a season or two earlier but that's rugby.

Now that he's gone I wonder will they go head hunting or seek applications? I hope they they go down the route of applications.

    Best of Luck Deccie.

Thanks for some of the memories but it's about time. Hopefully whoever comes in will be able to do the job.

Not outside of Ireland he won't - which leads me to believe he'll be looking for a coaching role within these shores soon enough.

Semantics ... he has been discharged from his job, which is what many would call a sacking. Doesn't really matter, the fact is the same and he will no longer be the head coach of the Ireland rugby team, he has been discharged form that duty.

Now, it'll be interesting to see who will be installed - presumably they will wnt to bring their own coaching team with them. If they try to get a team foisted on them, this will end in tears.

    Yay!

Suppose thanks for 2009 is in order.:D

This bit concerned me a bit:
The tour of North America, where Ireland will play the USA (Houston, June 8th) and Canada (Toronto, June 15th) will now be led by interim head coach Les Kiss who will be assisted by Gert Smal and Anthony Foley.

Hopefully not a sign of things to come, think Kiss and Smal are equally as stale as Kidney.

    Its the right call.
I don't wanna kick a guy when he is down so I hope whatever he does next works out for him. He has done so much in his coaching career. Thanks for the memories because there were some good times.

Not only in my rugby life! I got married the day before and I didn't think any day could top that one until we beat Wales!! :D I will always remember that day and the resulting emotions from the players and all associated and that's how I hope we will all remember what Kidney did for Irish rugby.

Time to move on though, let's hope the next few years bring more moments like March 2009.

a good decision i think team is going into a transition phase so bring in a new man with fresh ideas and let him build a new side

Rumour has it he'll be back to career guidance combined with a director of rugby position at UCC

Ewan McKenzie's odds to become next Irish coach were slashed to 1/2 today on Paddy Power. Don't know much about him but obviously a Super 15 title is nothing to look at lightly. What are people's thoughts on him?

Him or Dave Rennie would be pretty good hires from the SH in my book.

    Still prefer Joe though.

    Jake White for me.

Then slowly ease him into some role with Munster rugby again.

    Typical Irish move.

Never nice to see any man lose his job, but unfortunately it was the right call.

Seems like a nice genuine man and hopefully not the last rugby job for Kidney. Goes down as the best Irish coach in the professional era with his success at underage, Munster and Grand Slam.

Don't know much about him personally, but I do love how the Reds play rugby.

Think there's a lot of almost gloating about this - saw someone saying it's the best news Irish rugby fans have got in years.. Not nice to see really. There's also people blaming this solely on this year's Six Nations results which I think is a bit too simplistic tbh!

In fairness, it is good news for Irish rugby fans.

Thanks for the memories Declan, but this has been coming for a while.

If you can say one thing about the IRFU it's that they're loyal to their man.

I'd put it down as the best day Irish rugby has had since the win against Australia.

Ultimately and despite some bad luck with injuries he hasnt managed to get the best out of the group of players he has worked with. I do think it does also come down to some very fine margins at International rugby but over a long period, the form has been lacking. The success of the provinces has provided the starkest demonstration that Ireland have and continue to provide some exciting players capable of competing on the world stage.

I am looking forward to a fresh start, ideally the IRFU would have a shortlist of JS or CoS would be one I would favour but it is more likely to be Ewen McKenzie who despite a shaky time at Stade has grown into one of the most progressive and innovative coaches in the game and would shake things up.

I have to call bullsh!t here.

If we are willing to pin most/all of our team's failures on Kidney, we have to do the same with its successes.

I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
    The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interred with their bones

It will be very interesting to see how Kidney is remembered; Eddie arguably achieved a lot more with the national side but is generally regarded as a failure due to his inability to win a championship. Will Kidney's HC and GS wins outweigh the poor results of recent years?

Personally, I hope so. I'm very, very glad that his contract isn't being renewed and hope that he is not given another job in the Irish national set-up but he and his teams gave us some great days along the way.

Kidney's downfall was his inability to evolve as quickly as the game did but when he was at his peak from 06 to 09, he was pretty impressive.

    Best of luck Declan.

While it is good news I have serious misgivings about the June tour now. The IRFU statement says that they believe they can get a world class coach. Either Kiss, Smal and Foley are genuinely in with a shot of being involved in the set-up going forward (which is a bad idea in my view) or the IRFU are looking for someone external which makes the June tour a bit of a dead rubber tour.

I really don't want to see any of the current coaches involved in any way with the Irish side after June. We need a new direction and a new coach needs to be able to appoint his own coaching staff.

Thanks for 2009 Deccie. I will always remember it. But the IRFU should have acted a lot quicker. That the final years of top class pros like ROG and BOD have been so poorly spent is a stain on Irish rugby imo.

To Declan Kidney good luck and thanks for the good times. Especially the Slam. I'm not overly happy at Kiss been kept on would have preferred Ruddock then again I can see the logic in it. It's probably better for him to stay out of loop if he's a candidate and stay with the U20s at the Juniour WC where he's been doing a good job nurturing our young talent. My ideal choices would be Schmidt, McKenzie or Jake White with Mallet as an outside bet.

I'd say from an international perspective he'll be most regarded for what he did with Munster. I've read that on a coaching stance he's well regarded for the u20, seeing that Ireland is/was generally seen as lagging behind a lot of places in youth development. And getting a Grand Slam out of Ireland after so many nearlies just adds to his accolades. Whatever happens, I think he'll do better than Eddie. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up dealing with a non-Irish youth or academy setup.

It's the right call with Les Kiss for the summer I think. It allows for a clean break between Deccie and whoever ends up coach. (Sure, the IRFU would have to be as mad as the IRFU to appoint Kiss full time coach.)
