Let's say you load a particular car with maybe €4000 worth of extras.

Will this count for much extra when you come to sell your car over and above the milage you've clocked up?

Some more than others but on the whole they just make the car easier to sell rather than adding value.

Leather is probably the biggest one and even that only holds a small fraction.

No, the extras make it easier to sell but it is money down the drain. The only value you get is your own satisfaction in having the car you want.

It sometimes depends on the car. A 5 Series for example would be expected to have leather so if you don't spec that you might find it very hard to sell and have to drop your price.
Leather on something like a Golf is a waste of money because it's not expected in that class of car and secondhand buyers won't pay extra for it.

The above over-long list of what I'm probably going for in a Golf, is listed above.

Just wondering how much over the odds of the car itself, would count for the many extras listed in the previous post.

A question on whether it is worth spending that amount on a Golf or to go to a different brand of car?

That's just mental, it'll still be a 1.4 golf at the end of the day.

Not unless it's a MK5 Golf GTI 3 door with leather and DSG, as they still make mental money :p

it just wouldn't be right to spec up a golf, particularly a petrol one, because people like me will still asume you have wind up windows and no central locking because that's the way VW would like it.

    fair play though :)

You'd be nuts to spec a 1.4 Golf like the above - a quick scan that I spot quick -

Forget factory navigation - €1123 ?? - it'll be out of date so quick you won't believe it - ask anyone who bought in-car SatNav 10 yrs ago - buy a TomTom or Garmin - that you can put in any car, for €200.

€697 for 'cloth' upholstery ? Really ? - or what - you get unupholstered plastic buckets ???

Forget Xenon's on a 1.4 Golf - complete waste of money

€800+ for climate and 'traffic monitoring' ? FFS. I'd want climate, but I wouldn't give anyone €800 for it.

    €1123 for a sunroof ? Mental.

Unless you're buying leather, forget seat heating & winter pack. Personally I'd like the leather. But know this: you won't get €0.01 extra for it down the line. But the leather for YOU - not for the next guy - otherwise, just buy a 2nd hand car in the first place.

    "Light absorbing Glass" ???
Forget keyless access for €389 - see recent thread on theft.

I like the ACC alright, and at €173 I'd keep that.

Park Assist...??? Hmmm........not sure what I'd do there tbh. Tehcnically it's a toy, and waste of money. But if you like toys, then knock yourself out.

€39k for a Golf - any Golf - let alone a 1.4 is barking mad - I don't care how many extras are in it.

In fact, with that much money, I wouldn't be looking at a Golf anything.

We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. If it was me, i would remove things like external mirrors memory, rear view sensor (it isn't a passat), keyless entry, navigation system with cd and 2(?)sd slots. Fair play if you want well equipped car, but - if you are worried about deppreciation - i would buy only the toys i need. Winter pack - nice.
Think of what you really need and want, and what is- well - just a toy.
For me side mirrors memory is an useless toy. Same with keyless entry. What is wrong with pushing a button, and opening the door. And starting car with a key?

Take a leather, with heated seats, nice alloys and cruise control, and maybe one more item. Does the GPS unit have free updates? The thing is they bundled them all so if you want one, you have to take them all. Smart.

Just realized you will get a lot for that money, much more than i thought.
New, well equipped s60(someone mentioned before), and even BMW 316i sport saloon with leather, and nice wheels(total price 37.195 euro, not sure if delivery and other charges are included, but still...).

    €40k for a Golf 1.4 :)

Could you up your budget a bit? About €250k will do for a full spec BMW 760i

Keep it for 10 years and I'll buy it off you for €5k if you keep it in perfect condition :)

Okay lads thanks for the feedback.

I realise I was out doing the March Hare in nuttiness!

I'll trim my sails well down, even though that spec was the absolute max.

Though I do like a comfy car, with a few gadgets.

I'd be trading in an Accord with basically all the mod cons, but with the downside of it being a 2 litre petrol gas guzzling, tax rip off (€780)

What you've done there is turn a €28k car into a €40k car. You'll waste that money. By all means get a few choice options and good luck to you but don't go mad.
I had the 1.4 out on test and with options it ended up the same kind of price as you're talking about. I really felt it would be better shorn of the extras and certainly if I was spending my own money.
For €40k you could get a well-specced 3 series. Does that answer your question?

Youd buy a lot of tax with the sort of money you were thinking of spending on the Golf.

Plus give me an Accord over a Golf anyday; any Accord for that matter.

You are spending tens of thousands to save hundreds, you will need to keep the new car for about 20 years and assume motor tax remains unchanged to make any savings on what your currently driving.

This attitude does my head in . Happens all the time, "x for a renault . Omg" etc. Its not even ffs-39k for a 1.4 golf" . Why should no vw cost 39k? Should a fully loaded phaeton only cost 25k because its a vw? What if peugeot started selling ferraris with peugeot badges on them, should they be below a particular figure that for some reason nothing with a certain badge should cost more than that?

Ignoring the fact that Ferrari are owned by Fiat, for better or worse VW's hold their value to a much greater degree than Peugeots. You can call it badge engineering if you like, but thems the brakes.

On the main point, I would have not got the full spec. that I listed (though my trade in is pretty good). This thread though has clued me in a bit on on exluding shiny baubles and foucusing on things that would help to increase on things in the realm of safety.

€40k to spend on a car and you're looking at a 1.4 Golf. I'd give my left arm to have €40k to spend on a serious motor. A Golf though, madness!

Think of the metal you could get for €35k with a nice limp for running/repairs, the mind boggles!

This attitude does my head in . Happens all the time, "x for a renault . Omg" etc. Its not even ffs-39k for a 1.4 golf" . Why should no vw cost 39k? Should a fully loaded phaeton only cost 25k because its a vw? What if peugeot started selling ferraris with peugeot badges on them, should they be below a particular figure that for some reason nothing with a certain badge should cost more than that?

i wouldnt give 50p (old money) for any german or french tbh

    never mind 40k for a car that'll be worth 5k in 7-10yrs

Peter where's your logic that heated seats are a waste of money in this country coming from?!

We've had temperatures hovering around 0-1c over the last few days... but even when it's warmer, still a comfort thing.

They're one of the nicest optional extras known to man!!

Christ man you will get a newish A6 or A8 for that budget not a lousy Golf. Get a Quattro Avant or a 530D!!

What does a Golf GTI sell for? Or an R32? They are golfs too. The notion that a VW cant be worth €39k is a stupid one. That was the statment btw, not that a 1.4 golf isnt worth €39k,that ANY VW isnt worth €39k.

Are there many €40k cars worth over €5k at 10 years old? Every 2003 Accord on Carzone is under €5k for example.

I did. Golfs are selling for that, just not 1.4's. The rest was in relation to where that particular discussion started, in reply to "FFS €39k for a VW".

Be careful what you wish for....

Moving swiftly on, I still can't believe it. 39k for a Golf. A 1.4 Golf.

I'd buy a house in another country with that and still have change over for my collection!

put sportline/highline spec heated leather, dsg, panaramic sunroof on a decent engine you will be up at 50k on each of those .

is 40k worth it for a 1.4,i tend to say not.be nice spec in a gtd or gti but still expensive for such a simple car.
Irish vrt is the biggest issue here.

Sat in a 2001 Lexus with the original receipt paid by credit card for €110k in the glove box. Bought that day (2012) for €5k cash. That's a loss of €26 every day for 11 years. Cars are the Niagara Falls of rapid depreciation.

And €39k for a new Golf is lunacy irregardless of any modification or extra. The distance you could make that money go on the second hand market is insane.

And my 1995 205 with 200,000 miles on the clock has just passed it's NCT first time after I washed it, replaced a split driveshaft boot and a bulb in the reversing light.

for E34,340 you can get a new 3 series 316ES, with leather. No way would I pay anything like the 39k! If paying premium money I would want a premium car... You can get a new 520d for 44,500...

Such lunacy that we have to make up words to help describe it?

Irregardless is considered nonstandard because of the two negative elements ir- and -less. It was probably formed on the analogy of such words as irrespective, irrelevant, and irreparable. Those who use it, including on occasion educated speakers, may do so from a desire to add emphasis.

So calling someone out on the use of a non-standard word is worthy of a post these days in Motors? Sad day for all.

The word has been around a couple of hundred years and has been recognised in dictionaries since the 1900s.

To be fair, it is disputed and non-standard. But certainly not worth trolling about.
