    Hi all,
I do a very small bit of baking and can categorically say that im really just chancing my arm in the kitchen.
I have noticed that when i bake a sponge or even a meringue there is a really strong smell of eggs. I know there's bound to be a bit of a smell of egg considering its an ingredient of each but it really smelled like i had cooked an omelette and not a cake. particularly with the meringue, that smelled really strongly of egg even a day later. (i still ate it though)
is this normal or am i doing something wrong.
    Thanks

I assume you are baking with fresh eggs? If so I think it is just from the eggs in what you are making cooking.

Yes fresh eggs. if its just because of the eggs then surely i would have smelled the same on other peoples cakes but mine reeked of egg.
Maybe its the eggs im using?

    Thanks for the replies.

There is always a smell of eggs off a sponge when it is baking - it almost smells like omelette. It fades after it has cooled.

I've had that before, it's normal.
But does the cake actually taste eggy once it's cooled?

The smell is even worse when you're making a fatless sponge like a swiss roll. It smells really eggy when you take it out of the oven but the smell goes as it cools.
