Im not sure how much of a big deal people will make of this but i cant help noticing that people are less shocked nowadays when they hear of sex offences committed and some of the sentences given out for those guilty of commiting such offences. Generally i always thought when people referred to white collar crime it did not include serious offences like rape. The below is taken from rte news:

"White collar crime, specifically fraud and deception, rape and explosives offences also increased last year".

Well am i mistaken or should rape and perhaps explosives not be included in the above list of white collar crimes?

It is badly phrased, in fairness.

    It should read

White collar crime, specifically fraud and deception, and rape and explosives offences also increased last year.

Does that sentence belong in Eats Shoots & Leaves by any chance?

Im reading over it again and perhaps i am just reading it wrong but i reckon they could have worded it better than the way they have it.

I'm thinking this is an "eats shoots and leaves" situation and that it's just sloppy journalism. They probably meant something like:

"White collar crime such as fraud and deception, and rape and explosives offences also increased last year."

No, they meant specifically fraud and deception, i.e. fraud and deception were the types of white collar crime that increased. Throwing an and in there would have made the sentence clearer.

A full stop after the word deception would clear it up better than adding the word "and" imo.

EDIT: Misread the sentence myself. :o

I think it is just sloppy journalism. in other news on RTE today regarding the news of jobs being created in Waterford it says the following:

"The company is investing €60 in the Waterford facility, with the jobs coming on stream over the next two years".

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0328/378768-waterford-jobs/

What to you reckon they meant regarding the above? How much is €60.00 going to get them?

I mean i pay €160 a year for the tv licence and look at the state of journalism at RTE.
