Welcome to the OFFICIAL Boards.ie 2013 Masters Tournament Super Thread where people get to discuss the 2013 Masters Tournament.

I am currently in the process of nailing down daily feeds and photos from a contact arriving at Augusta on Tuesday and will share these with the loyal golf forum posters, giving you inside information on the worlds greatest golf tournament.

This year it is all about Woods, he is the Master after all.
Personally I believe this tournament may be wrapped up by Saturday afternoon / evening but heres hoping for a tense finish down the back nine on the final day.

Will Rory 'get his finger outa his ass?'
Will Big Phil flop his way to another green jacket?
Will we have another surprise victor along the lines of bubba, Schwartzel, Immelman or Cabrera?
Will we have a meltdown or choke on the Sunday like Rory or Gregory Norman?

This thread could be epic. The 2013 Masters Tournament will be.

Great to see the USPGA endorsing Boards.ie.
Will there be a dedicated non-advertising stream solely available to Boards posters?
Looking forward to the inside info, inside as in not from the inside of the OP's head.

Really looking forward to it.Are BBC covering it?

Any thread with "Official" and "Super" in it should be good.
I personally think you missed an opportunity to throw in some Roman Numerals

They will do well not to set off the metal detectors that you have to pass through before you get in so,

The Masters is just class, say what you want about other tournaments including The Open etc but it is the pinnacle of golf on TV in non-Ryder cup years IMHO, just a shame it's so early.
Can't wait, please let us have an exciting back 9 on Sunday, Tiger, Lefty, Rose, Rory, Louis, Poults and Paddy all together at the top, pure bliss.

    stick it in the sock
usually works fine - the auld dudes at the entrance are rarely capable of getting down that far with the detector

alternatively, coat the phone with pieces from an old cd
it deflects the metal detector detectiveness
i have first hand experience of this and can vouch for this

in any case, this is a professional service i am offering boards.ie so allow me to concern myself with the small detail of getting insider info to members of the golf forum. you guys please concentrate on discussing golf specific stuff. it'll keep greebo et al off my back

Everything about Augusta & The Masters is magical. Have been watching it since Woosnam won in 91 and it doesn't get any less special with each passing year. The big white bunkers, the back 9 on Sunday, those 2 par 5s can either make or break someones charge towards the green jacket.

Can't wait. Justin Rose gets the nod for me....far too long since a European winner (1999)

Sky Sports Best Shot of the Masters Ever Competition:

    My verdict - shot B

    http://www1.skysports.com/greatest-masters-shot

Big Phil's shot between the trees a very close second

Agree with B. 2nd would be J, Bubba's winner last year.

Agreed. Those two shots were incredible.

There's nothing special about Phil's in my honest opinion. He was blessed to get away with the drive, then had a clear shot to the green. (I think he was only hitting a 6 iron or something) Westwood hit almost the same drive and had no shot whatsoever.

Scratch that - I just watched Phil's shot a few times on YouTube. It was an incredible shot too!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,184 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Hard one.

I know Tiger's is Iconic - the way the ball falls in.

But there are some amazing iron shots from both Charl and Louis.

The thing about Bubba - there are very few golfers in the world who could play that shot and for it to be in a play off too - amazing.

But - Tiger will win. I'm not sure it is the best shot - I know that won't go down well.

Love this tournament, love the idea of this thread, I am hoping "The Guardian" might guide it in the direction we need it to go over the next few weeks:
    • Best shot
    • Best Sunday comeback
    • Most likeable winner
    • Worst Sunday collapses
    • Best Irish finishes(after all it is the green jacket)
    • This years contenders
    • This years tournament
For me, I think you need to take the timing of the shot into account and the circumstances were it to go badly wrong so I think even though Tigers was a great shot, Bubba/Sandy Lyle & Larry Mize all "had to" hit the shots they did to win their Masters so it has to be one of those! What an Albatross from Louis last year though!

    Roll on Thurs April 11th!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,184 ✭✭✭✭FixdePitchmark

    Ok slept on that.

    1Bubba Watson
    2 Louis oosthuizen

The best to watch is Tiger. But amazing hook and low iron. We could play Tiger's shot , but very few could hit the other 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 714 ✭✭✭loadwire

Very close between Sandy and Bubba but I'll go for Sandy. Agree with the comment that very few (if any) other players could play Bubba's shot but for him, it wasn't as difficult given he moves the ball hugely on most of his shots. Still brilliant to have that control of it under such pressure.

Louis and Tiger's are great Masters 'moments' but there's an element of luck involved in terms of actually holing them.

Funny thing - I couldn't sleep last night and ended up watching past Masters on youtube to chill out. Davis Love actually holed from a very similar position on the Sunday in 1999 - the one that Olazabal beat Norman in (though Love actually finished 2nd).
    http://youtu.be/ZDQr8xuzjN4?t=1h59m37s
It brought him to within 1 of the lead so was just as high stakes as Tiger's. He didn't follow it up with a win but then Tiger was a bit lucky to win the year he holed his shot, bogeying 17 and 18 and eventually winning in a playoff.

I am too young to have seen much of Seve in action so when watching this clip, it occured to me how similar Phil Mickelson is to him, even the way Phil lines up his irons is so simlar to Seve's second shot here!! I dunno maybe it's just me!

How can you have Louis? He was more than likely playing to catch the slope but a bit flukey to go in the hole so therefore the skill part was limited

I'm not great at remembering shots but something where the risk element was very high would feature for me

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 354 ✭✭The Guardian

i think the longer shots by oosthuizen etc are just flukey
could as easy have rolled off the green and been forgotten for ever

Tiger's shot is out of this world.
he has to pick a spot on the green to chip onto, and then allow the contours of the green to do the rest
this requires exceptional vision and imagination
amazes me when people say he is far too 'mechanical' and doesnt have the talent of say Rory.
i dont think any other golfer of the last 20 years, except Seve perhaps, could have executed that shot

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,430 ✭✭✭Ilik Urgee

The one for me was Bubba's. To stick it into the green with that much draw when most others would've played for the fairway. Scwhartzel's was a close second imo.
I'd have to put Tiger's well down the list,if not last. As another poster alluded to,all he had to do was pick a spot on the green, and hope the contours did the rest. It's what us amateurs do week in week out on the course, whereas a great player would've flopped all the contours out of the equation.

Don't know how some of those shots got there, I mean it must be because they are Faldo, Seve, Nicklaus etc and not the shot themselves.

Louis' shot was just superb, the swing, the sound at impact and the threading of the ball across the green magnetic like to the hole, but lets be honest, he didn't go for it so an element of luck involved, but what a strike.

I remember Tiger's shot, he took so long and was so focused, he was going for the hole from that seemingly impossible position, the vision and touch to pitch that in was just bordering unreal, the way the ball nearly stopped short and the "swoosh" just dripped into the hole must have had the Nike marketing guys creaming themselves. The perfect golf shot and because I was watching it live it edges it for me because that was a golfing moment in time.

I remember at the time thinking there would be an immediate advert with the clip including a slogan something along the lines of "Nike, gives you that extra edge". But I don't remember ever seeing anything of the sort. Would love to know why not?

Did Seve's shot have any special significance? Good shot but not sure if it belongs in the same company as some of the others.

Lyle's shot from the bunker for me.

But I could be biased, it's the first shot I actually remember from golf when I was 6 years old :)
That shot and the subsequent putt. He HAD to do it to win it by 1

It was lucky to go in. But that does not take away from the technical brilliance of the shot.
it is a 253 yrd 4 iron. perfect strike on line.

And on the lucky and significance side it got him into playoff was on last day and only 4th albatross ever.

Everybody here has played a 90 degree break and got one close or in (I imagine).
Not everybody could hit a perfect 4 iron like Louis.

I'm sure there were lots of perfect 4 irons that week, I think bubba's wins by a mile.the point is that we compare their shots to each other, not to ours...

incredible pressure, if it didn't come off it was game over four him in the playoff.
I'd put lyles up there too, for the same reason.

I think it is fair to use our knowledge of golf to compare the shots with each other. That is the basis why we know bubba's shot is amazing too.
