What do you think of the sub?

I'm considering one as it fits perfectly into the boot of a mini :)

My own car has the standard mini harmon/kardon with dsp, sounds good.

I also have a couple of these in storage.
    Becker grandprix.

Becker Cascade (dedicated Ipod connection, Bluetooth, GPS, compact flash with new Maps) external Mic, OLED screen all on single DIN)

Nothing better for the look in a e31. Plus it has nice features alright.
How about sound quality with the Becker?

Love the simplicity of Becker units. Headunits shouldn't stick out like a sore thumb.

Yep, pricey but it looks the part and had the exact feature set I wanted (so hard to get in a Single DIN unit). Think this unit was made in 2006 and there is little, if anything that does it all and doesnt look like $hit since.

Sound quality is "pretty good" for a stock sound system but far short of what an audio enthusiast would crave. I read online the Beckers really dont have that great quality (depsite their $$) but most of the issue with the E31 is the old and proprietary speakers. Sub helps though.

Bingo, aftermarket headunits these days seem to be under the impression they deserve to be the "centre piece" and not an integrated part of the console as they should be IMO.

    I'm running Blaupunkt Hamburg MP57

    hamburg-mp57.jpg

got it many years ago on eBay for the primeraand now itresides in the MR2, got it initially because I needed a new radio and was looking for a car kit also.

The mr2 has a double DIN so might be tempted to grab something else.

A musician friend of mine bought a mk2 Corsa with no stereo so he used the space to store a harmonica to play at traffic lights.

A great sub, with its air chanelling it would rival a 600w 10" no problem, its quite loud , it makes everything sound much better and has speaker level inputs for oem systems like your mini .

Only downside is that the amp seems to be more powerful than the drivers in it , it has 2 16cm shallow woofers , ive had it 2 years and managed to blow them twice listening to jungle / dubstep tracks , not even at full volume , if you want to add a bit of bass its great, but dont crank it up full , certain frequencies just blow those driver units at high volume.

I would hazard a guess that it's not the amp being too overpowered, but rather underpowered. If you try and push over-compressed lows into a system like that, it cannot reproduce all the frequencys at once using that amp with the power supply you're feeding it (your 12v 60ah car battery + alternator) and so "cooks" the coils by feeding it a poor signal. Don't forget that your car is trying to feed a lot of electronics at once, not just the radio + amp!

    Just my 2c.

Its an 90a alternator and 120ah battery afaik and ive a clean ground connection, 2v p2p outputs set to below the peaking level on the hea unit , gain set to well below peaking level , and it filtered to below 130Hz , Its definitely a design flaw in the amp or sub, not my equipment setup

I wouldn't mind adding a bit more low end, the harmon/kardon setup uses the 6x9's in the rear for the low frequencies, it works quite well.

Had a lovely alpine in my last car but sold it with the car - really should have kept it though :(

Anyone know if that yatour system would fit a 08 Focus?

Some photos as promised. Please bear in mind that this system was installed by me over 13 years ago and aesthetics may show signs of age but believe me, the sound doesn't - that's why I'm moving it into the house!!

3 amps (HF is upper left), DSP hideaway unit and dual voice coil subwoofer. All in the boot.

    dsc0042wiz.jpg

Same but alternative view of the amplifiers and DSP.

    dsc0043ln.jpg

This view shows the VW Passat fuse holder and relay plate that I used as the central electrics for the audio system.

    dsc0044vq.jpg

Now it's removed and awaiting a PSU and speaker cabinets for installation in the house...........

    dsc0047wcc.jpg

    A slightly different angle.

    dsc0046hj.jpg

Time now to order the PSU and hope Revenue don't shaft me........
