    Bran Flakes: (http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/en_GB/bran-flakes.html)
    Energy 356kJ
    Protein 10g
    Carbs 67g
    Fat 2g
    Fibre 15g
    Salt 1g

    Porridge: (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110305021338AAoMgnU)
    Energy 368kJ
    Protein 11g
    Carbs 62g
    Fat 8g
    Fibre 7g
    Salt

I was going to try porridge as every who does weight training and is into fitness in any way continually point out that it is better than the Bran Flakes which I currently take.

However, when I take a look at comparing the nutritional information there doesn't seem to be much in it in a nutritional level - only an imbalance between the fat and fibre content.

So, can someone please explain why I keep getting shouted at for not eating porridge? Is it due to the breakdown of the carbs in that most of the porridge comes from starch yet the brans flakes mostly comes from sugar?

Is it worth trying porridge as it even looks disgusting :(

    Thanks.

I have porridge everyday and yes it looks horrible but its not. You can add kcal free sweetners, honey or jam to make it nicer.

One of the main differences would be

    Branflakes
    Sugar 22g

    Porridge
    Sugar 1g

Also eat 100g of Bran Flakes and 100g of Porridge and tell us which one has you more full.

If you want more fibre than porridge oats provide, try oatbran. It's way tastier too.

You can just eat the uncooked oats with milk, no need to cook it.

Or you can make pancake with them, which also lets you get an egg in there. Load of tips in this old thread

If I am going to treat myself to something which is 22% sugar it certainly wouldn't be branflakes! its astonishing how they can make them taste so bland when they are such junk. Its like the opposite of what everybody else is trying to do.

I recommend "jumbo oat flakes" - instead of rolled or pin-head oats. They don't turn into such a gloopy paste.
Sunflower seed, pumpkin seeds, dried fruit add some interest and bite.

Porridge with blueberries cinnamon mixed seeds wheat germ and honey is what I have every morning.

Used to eat All Bran every morning until i found out the horrendous amounts of added sugar in it.

Okay, I'm going to have to try this stuff now and give it a proper try. Feels like it is going to be like a bushtucker trial :D

Not to mention Bran is also like a brillo pad to the humam stomach ... best avoided long term me thinks

I used to eat Weetabix for years as my breakfast. I never fancied porridge as it looked fairly mank.
I finally gave porridge a chance over a year ago, and I've never looked back. It's delicious. I look forward to it each morning (a bit sad I know! :pac: ). I normally buy Kavanagh's Organic Jumbo Porridge Oats from Aldi. I cook them in the microwave with milk. But I leave them slightly undercooked so they are a bit chewy. I always have a poached egg afterwards :)

You can try making pancakes as well with porridge oats.
I use 120g of porridge oats (quickly blended), 300ml of milk, and 2 eggs. Mix together and leave over night in the fridge.

I don't drink milk so what is the best porridge for me to use? I assume I'll be putting water into it?

I've already bought some cinnamon powder to make it taste better. Not really sure what to do though about milk replacement...

    My breakfast:

    Bowl of ready brek with:
2 tbsp of helens golden linseed crunch (aldi)
    2 tbsp of flaked almonds
    Slimline milk
    1 tbsp honey.

Its genuinely delicious and I am happy to eat it!

You need to look at how the carbs break down

    Bran Flakes: (http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/en_GB/bran-flakes.html)
    Energy 356kJ
    Protein 10g
    Carbs 67g <- of which sugars:22g

^^ the porridge has bugger all sugar, if any, in it compared to 20%+ in the bran flakes. You should be looking at this just as much as looking at the fat and fibre.

Tried porridge for two days now and it is stinking. No taste, no flavour, no texture and looks vile too. I'm not enjoying it one bit.

Is adding honey to it not loading me with sugars which I would have got from the Bran Flakes. One tblspn of honey contains 17g of sugar and 65kCal.

I'll try it again with some apples and honey, but I'm not feeling the love.

Is there anything tastier out there?

Don't give up yet! Some suggestions:
Keep the porridge quite liquid and hot. Nothing worse that lukewarm stodge. I prefer jumbo flakes for texture.
Add some tasty bits: banana (in the bowl not the pan), dried fruit, seeds (e.g. pumpkin, sunflower), nuts crushed, a spoon from packets of ground linseed\nuts\berries as already mentioned.
Cinnamon suggested earlier I'm trying at the moment.
At the end of cooking time I sometimes add a couple of spoons of muesli for some variety .
I try to avoid refined sugar but honey and dried fruit I consider (maybe naively) okay.

I sometime use oat bran instead of porridge for a different texture and flavour

    You're doing it wrong.
Add fruit, nuts, make it with almond or coconut milk, add falvoured whey, Blend the oats with and egg whites and some milk and fry it up in some coconut oil.

I don't see how anyone doesn't like oats - personally I'd eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner if I could :o

I mash up banana with cinnamon while my oatbran cooks in a pot (after being soaked in water overnight). Then when I put the cooked oatbran into my bowl, I pour some desiccated coconut over it, then top with the mashed banana. I mix it all about and eat. It is the most delicious thing. I wake up in the mornings looking forward to it!

Tried it today with apples. It was okay, but I couldn't eat it all. How much cinnamon should be put in. I've got a bag full of ground cinnamon here to use.

I add a teaspoon of cinnamon. Also on the honey front I find half a teaspoon is enough.

Buy some blueberries and add them and some mixed seeds.

I actually love my porridge breakfast.

I add a teaspoon in to the porridge bowl when it is cooked. Pre ground cinnamon.

Zombie Nosh suggested coconut milk a while, it is very very good indeed.

All you need to compare Branflakes to porridge is to look at the ingredient list.

Branflakes: Wholewheat, Wheatbran (a wasteproduct of food processing proven to deplete the body of vitamins and minerals), Sugar, Barley Malt Flavouring, Salt, Honey. Niacin, Iron, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B1(Thiamin), Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin B12. (Because chemical nutrients are exactly like real food and Kellogg's don't just use the cheapest versions of these nutrients to make it look like this isn't processed crap /sarcasm)

    Porridge: ..eh.. porridge :)

Still persevering with this gunk. Can only eat it with 1 apple and approx 10 grapes cut in through it. Even at that, I'm probably only taking about 20g of dried porridge.

    Viva Coco Pops!

How exactly are you making it?

I know myself I wouldn't be able to eat the type of porridge my mother makes ... It's like cement. I prefer my porridge a bit undercooked with plenty of milk.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,593 ✭✭✭funkey_monkey

A wee bit of oats, same of milk and water and pop into microwave.

Chop up apple and halve some grapes & stir through when porridge cooked (approx 1:30min)

Just try it with the cold milk & fruit and do not bother cooking the oats. Then it is basically muesli with no nuts and fresh fruit.

It will be easy to eat more than 20g of oats when it is not cooked, overeating muesli is very easy, I used to eat up to 1000kcal portions.

    Funkey,
i am a regular enough porridge eater,(sticky old bowls to wash ,though)'
you micro wave it, as i do, but often it goes a bit stodgy, so remove, stir up with some more milk and give another minute.

am currently using lidl porridge with fruits in it, very nice, though have not looked at the ingredients
