Insurance on grand canal

    Greetings,
I was just looking at the registration form for the annual passage and mooring permit for the canals and they are looking for insurance details. I'm confused now because I didn't think insurance was mandatory. If I don't have insurance will they refuse me a permit?

More than likely. WI don't want to have pick up the tab to dispose of abandoned or sunken boats, damage to banks, locks etc.

If you were moored beside me I would want you to have insurance :D

The new permits were brought out in november 2012 and Waterways Ireland requires all applicants to hold 3rd party liability insurance.

Here is a link with some info. http://www.waterwaysireland.org/ckfinder/userfiles/files/Permit%20Application%20Guidelines%2014_11_12.pdf

I did most of my research last year, and made a purchase at the weekend. I hadn't factored insurance into my budget. Any recommendations where to get third party insurance for a 19ft with a 20hp outboard?

It should be cheep enough for that boat, here are some you can try.

I'm getting insurance quotes at the moment for my dad's boat.

Places I've been looking are (I've taken these straight from a list I had to check so apologies if they're incorrect or not applicable)

    Allianz
    craftinsure.ie
    yachtsman.ie
    chill.ie
    aquabroker.ie

As the boat I'm insuring doesn't have an engine I skimmed over their certification requirements for the various speeds, but you might find that the insurers (separate of any regulatory body or otherwise) require you to be certified to a certain level before they'll insure you.
