Was in Tesco yesterday & noted that there were few wines below Eur10 now.

Not sure if this is the precursor to the 25% off, but was very disappointed that the prices were so high.

I saw bottles which were Eur8 a month ago at EUR12.99 & higher now.

Tesco need to be careful they don't take us for mugs, as with the weakness of Sterling, x-border shopping with Sainsbury's comes back into play again.

The government sticking another Euro of tax on the bottle in the budget didn't help

I would have to agree that Tesco is already pretty expensive for wine. 25% would only bring prices down inline with other stores I reckon.

Will pick up a few Oyster Bay @ €7.50 though

Wine in Tesco has gone way up in price since last year. This discount will only bring it back to the old prices.

    Yeah I notice a few wines that were €10 and €8 that are now €15, €12 and €11;

Chateauneuf du Pape was €10/12.50 at Christmas it's now €15
Piccini Memoro was on special before Christmas at €7.50/€8 it's now €11
Also the other Piccini Chiantis were on offer for €8 at Christmas
McWilliams Mount Pleasant wines were €10 now €12
Savanha Winemaker Selection was €8 now €10
    Faustino was €8 now €10

.... and all of those prices were before the 6 bottle discount. ie. Chateauneuf was €7.50 with the discount.

There's a good deal on Pol Aime Champagne works out at €12 a bottle with 6 bottle discount: http://www.tesco.ie/groceries/Product/Details/?id=257073588

    Interesting

Current - La Garde Du Pape Chateauneuf-Du-Pape Reduced from €25.99 to €15.
    25% off 6 = €11.25 per bottle

The same bottle the last time they did this offer was €20 reduced to €10
    25% off 6 = €7.50

Still have the receipt from the last time I bought some.

The €1 levy doesn't equal the difference.

A LOT of the wines on 'offer' in Tesco currently are considerably more expensive than previous offers in the last year. Even many of the cheaper wines seem to have gone up by €2.

Santa Rita 120 now €11.60 a bottle. This was always €8.99 last year and even I bought it on offer at €5.99.Even with the Govt levy it shouldn't be selling at €11.60. I called into a petrol station/shop last week and they were selling it for €8.99 so Tesco need to look at their pricing and stop ripping us off.

+1 on this, I got a bottle in spar for 8.99 as well! Tesco wine prices should be classed as pay more at tesco :(

The first thing I noticed when the Gov levy of €1 per bottle was introduced was most of Tesco's range had jumped by €2 or more depending on brand.
The only wines I noticed that only had the €1 added were their €4 crappy range (Ca De Lago Cabernet Sauvignon, Marques De Leon etc ... )

In contrast , Aldi didn't raise a lot of their wines by even the mandated €1 levy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,630 ✭✭✭Oracle

Yes Lidl also have a different Wine of the Week every week for €5. I've been getting them, some good quality wines, and you don't need to buy 6 bottles.

There was a euro put on a bottle in the budget, so the rises aren't all going into Tescos pockets.

There are still some bargains though. Ca de Lago Cab Sauv is €3.75 with this promotion. I've had wines 4 times the price that didn't drink as well.

I go to lidl now, Tescos prices are just to expensive, Iam sure they have noticed a drop off in sales.

You used to have a choice of half decent bottles of red for around €7 / €8 in Tesco and that was before any pretend "discount" / "offer" ... now not so. It says it all when Superquinn have better value reds in the €7 / €8 range ... Superquinn !!!

Got 6 bottles of Memoro Piccini, a lovely red, supposedly half price at €9. Worked out at just over €7 with the deal.

Can any recommend a decent red €8-€10 from Aldi/Lidl. Last one I bought was really weak, it ended up in the pasta sauce, it was either that or throw it out:D.

A cabernet or shiraz(sorry if it's off topic) but there seem to be a few knowledgeable people here

    serious?

Lidl do have a few decent wines, but ALL of their wines also went up by €1 - Selection is very small too.

    Think of following

a 4.99 bottle is costed as follows

    Vat 94c
Delivery charge - approx 20c per bottle
duty 2.59 (5.18 on sparkling wine)
cost of contents + profit 1.27

assuming a low profit of 25% (of price net of vat), that leaves the contents cost value at about 27c.

on a 9.99 bottle the duty and delivery cost stays the same, so content cost even allowing for standard 30% gross profit is about 2.85 -

on a 14.99 bottle, the cost of contents is 5.75 - over 20 times the cost of contents of a 4.99 bottle.

That's why, no matter where you buy it, a €5 bottle is pure muck.

    Vat 94c
Delivery charge - approx 20c per bottle
duty 2.46 (4.92 on sparklin wine)
cost of contents + profit 1.40

assuming a low profit of 25% (of price net of vat), that leaves the contents cost value at about 40c.

on a 9.99 bottle the duty and delivery cost stays the same, so content cost even allowing for standard 30% gross profit is about 3.00 -

on a 14.99 bottle, the cost of contents is 5.90 - almost 15 times the cost of contents of a 4.99 bottle.

That's why, no matter where you buy it, a €5 bottle is pure muck.

even if sold at cost, the contents in a cheap bottle are at most 1.27 - pure muck.

And that excludes any distributor costs and supermarkets do not sell below cost unless its a very short term promotion.

duty and vat doesn't change whether you buy one bottle or one million bottles.

and 20c/bottle for transport and packaging is at the very low end of the scale.

Basically, after €5, every euro adds about 50c to the cost of the contents, so at about €8-€10, you get good drinkable wines, at €12-€15 you can get very good wines.
Under €8, its hit and miss,(but gems can be found) under €5, it will be muck.

Lidl do (used to do?) a Chilean Cimarosa Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon for €10 which was really nice - almost Shiraz spicy (may be more now, if still stocked).

Incorrect. I haven't done an exhaustive investigation, but some (at least) of the Aldi / Lidl wines did not go up by the full duty rise, especially at the lower end (some didn't go up at all). I believe the 'award winning' Toro Loco in Aldi is now selling at €5.49, not €5.99.

Your calculations are also wrong; duty is €2.78 + VAT.

While €5 wines are certainly unlikely to blow most people away, most of them are at least drinkable. The fact remains that, especially with Tesco's latest price gouging, Lidl and Aldi generally sell the best wines in the under €10 category. You'll get a lot better price/quality ratio than the other supermarkets or independent wine shops. I think you also do a disservice to their range - Tesco may have a massive aisle of wine, but the bulk of it is perfectly drinkable but ultimately 'meh' €6 - €9 New World identikit wines. Lidl (at least in my local store) also carry a pretty decent 'premium' selection with second wines of classified estates in the €15 - €20 bracket, etc. Aldi also carry one Grand Cru Classe (Lynch Moussas) at a price way below what you would pay in an independent wine shop, if they even carried it.

    €5 bottle = muck
    €5.99 = award winning wine

    .

apologies - I was using the spirits bottle size of 700ml instead of the wine bottle size of 750ml (revenue site quotes per litre), vut shows that even less value is in the cheap bottle

laugh away, but a 4.99 bottle has from even at a low margin, about 45c worth of wine at cost in it.
a 5.99 bottle has at a low margin, about 1.30 worth of wine in it

In manufacturing terms of mass production, 1.30 will buy you far far better wine than 45c - hence a 5.99 bottle can be miles ahead of a 4.99 bottle and as per my post above, you can find some gems in the €6-€8 price range, Lidl's pinot Grigio being a classic example.

O'Briens always do 10 or 15% back on loyalty cards over bank holiday weekends. This weekend it's 10%. That said, their prices have been creeping up markedly over the past year. And they weren't even great value before that.

I went down to Tesco last night and spent all of €23 on 6 bottles of wine. We uncorked the Vielle Fontaine last night to see how bad a €3 wine could be. Not exactly full bodied, and no lasting finish, but it was definately drinkable - light and fruity. No banging head this mornign either. I've had worse bottles costing 4 times that price. I have another 5 bargain basement wines to try over the weekend so I'll report back. We got a few of the Tesco Simply range - Cab Sauv, Cotes du Rhone, Chianti and the Pinotage.
