Sexist hiring of staff.

So I saw on my Fb that a bar from my area is advertising for female only bar staff and told guys to not apply.

We are looking for a female bartender to join our team have you got the skills if so send us on your CV sorry guys all the guy positions are filled

Surely if I am more qualified at pouring a pint of warm bavaria I should be hired over a girl.

So, Sexist or not?

This happens on a regular basis, looking for females over males. I'm sure it happens in reverse as well though,though not as much.

I know it happens illicitly and hot girls will get a job over an ugly girl in retail because of boobs but I can't remember it being so blatantly advertised.

I used to work in a place where all the bar and floor staff were hot girls and the bar management were guys. No female managers at all. That is the way we were told to hire.

The owner was a woman and it was her direction.

It is sexist, of course. But as someone else mentioned, hot girls will get hired over ugly girls in some jobs (and hot men will get hired over ugly men in some jobs). I'm not sure what to call that, it's not sexist (looks-ist maybe? :pac:) But it's the same principle; they're hiring someone based on their appearance rather than their abilities. I'm never going to get a job in a fancy clothes shop cos I'm not good looking enough and I wouldn't particularly complain about that. I wouldn't particularly complain if a men's gay bar said they hire "Men only", even though that's sexist.

It's a tough one.

Agreed. I hate it when girls are not considered for labouring jobs on building sites. Surely they can do it just as well as a guy and be as productive.

Apologies for the low brow comment, has there ever been a case of sexism being brought about anti-men issues.

The bar is better off letting everyone apply & interview et al ... and only hire women then. This would create less outcry. Men would go to the bar a lot more, thus increasing revenue, saves on advertising .

Misleading opening sentence - gives the impression that they look for female staff exclusively, whereas they're looking for one female staff member and there are existing male staff members.
It is gender discrimination but with the customer in mind (perhaps moreso the male customer).

I didn't get that impression but did read the part about male positions being filled with some scepticism.

I think getting upset about this sort of thing is taking equality too far. People aren't equal, some times a young person is more suitable than an old person, sometimes an Irish person is more suitable than an African and sometimes a girl is more suitable than a boy.

Try to treat people as equals where possible but not to the point of ignoring the truth.

Is the gender quota for a bar not sexist if I am more qualified than Mary down the road who has no qualifications but gets the job because she is a girl.

The way they phrased it as guy/girl positions sounds like they have designated jobs for girls and guys based purely on sex.

Don't know about the rest of you, but I'm happy certain places have mainly female staff. Strip clubs are a great example.

I don't want AdmiraloftheFleet on stage when I walk in. Sure he is a nice guy and can shake his money maker, but its not what I want when I go there for perv with the guys.
