'Lost' car

What's the easiest way to locate a car that's been lost?

A friends father has lost his car after visiting the Square shopping centre Tallaght. He's pretty old and convinced he parked it there. We have checked all car parks, reported to security and contacted the guards. He has the keys.

Then there is the possibility of it actually been stolen?

    Any help appreciated.

Try some "Have you seen this Car" posters with a cute picture of the car

What car is it? Cars are being dragged onto trucks and stolen often enough now

Eh, wait until the shops are closed? She'll stand out like a pimple on your ass then.....

Or walk around hitting the lock button when it's dark?

How did he lose it? Car park isn't that big in the square. Chat to security too.... They may be able to locate it or know where it is...

Wait until it's dark and then walk around with the FOB pressing the door lock button to flash the lights?

Security have been contacted, nothing as of yet. Centre open late tonight so will try your other ideas. Thanks.

He's old, forgetful as we now know, have checked car parks twice in last hour and nothing.

Square car park is quite big. Have you checked the multistory? The open spaces near the Tesco entrance? Does he have his ticket? If he came into the car park he would of been issued with a ticket that should at least detail what entrance he came in at.

I don't want to be mean but, I suggest he reports it stolen.
    If it is, it is.
If it isn't, perhaps it is best he lost it because perhaps he shouldn't be driving.
Think about it: you are looking only for his car now. Next time you might be looking for his car with him in it.

    No offense!

Will check this out. Thanks a lot. Ill be in touch.

He was picked up on Level 2, if he didn't park in the centre where in and around the square can you park? He's 70, doesn't have a mobility problem as in he can walk fine... If that helps? Tried Shamrock Rovers stadium, Lidl/woodies...

Check his ticket to see what enterance he used if there is one issued. Ask him what shop he visited first and what door he entered the shopping centre in.

If he has a receipt from the first shop he went to you should be able to eork out an apporox time of arrival, maybe security will have a cctv of him driving his car into the car park and be able to see what zone he parked in.

Fully agree, family have spoke to him re this.

Then again, if it was stolen, maybe he's fine... Big IF... Gardai have details on system as lost / stolen already and are keeping an eye...

Happens all the time at Dublin Airport.

Almost happened to me, parked the car at 5am, legged it to get the flight.
Flew back a few days later and could remember the car park but not exactly where. No remote fob either so just walked around for 2 hours trying to find it.

Eventually needed to pee so badly I had to go in some bushes, turned around and was standing next to it :D

I lost my car at Oxegen in Punchestown a few years back; took me two hours to find it. Admittedly a much larger car park and in the dark, but its not necessarily an automatic sign of senility!

Booo, it's not like younger people don't remember where they parked at shopping centres? It happens all the time in large places.
When I lived in the city I could never remember which street I parked my car on, every morning the same walk around to check.
One morning my car was actually stolen, took me half a day to figure it out lol.

Was just talking about this thread to one of the girls in the office, and her response was evident of her intelligence:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,760 ✭✭✭Theta

Can you spin down to the car parks late at night and take a look around when its emptied out?

Here is a question, if someone abandons a car is there any kind squatters rights for cars? There is a lovely car in my apartment blocks car park that hasnt moved in 2.5 years. Its covered in a heavy layer of dust. Wouldnt mind having first dibs!

"Park'n'find" apps. Might be useful next time.
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.pointwin.parknfind_v2&hl=en
    https://itunes.apple.com/ie/app/park-and-find/id510786234?mt=8
There's plenty more, and free ones too.

Not sure how accurate inside a multi-storey but you can add level number.

OP, your father is not going senile - far from it.

He simply lost the car in a high stakes poker game and doesn't want to admit it.

    Any update btw?

Indeed, years back when I was working in Dublin a buddy was coming up on the train for an interview, I collected him at the station and we went for lunch in The Square, took us ages to find the car, couldn't remember what entrance we came in or anything :pac:

    Boo right back at you.
Millions of young people forget where they parked every day at 4:20. What does it have to do with anything? My hunch that this particular gentleman could be becoming increasingly more forgetful was right and appreciated.
You on the other hand would be well advised to eat more fish.

Its in an assigned space so I assume the owner parked it there because they are pretty heavy handed about clamping if your in the wrong spot!

I would have said the same thing at one point.

Until my old flatmate(30) and his friend(32) parked in Dundrum and lost the car not once but twice.

Security could even tell him what level and area he was in. Took him 3 hours to find it the first time.

They would have been quicker just walking up and down every aisle themselves....would have been good self punishment too. :D

There is also a rooftop car park at the Square, entrance beside the Atari. A lot of people don't know it's there - could he have found that one and parked there? Or even in the Council one just accross from The Tesco car park area. Or really unlikely, but could he possibly have got into the staff car park?

    Hi OP,

I would also advise phoning Euro Car Parks underneath Marks and Spencers. There is a high chance that he may have parked in there as its beside the square and it also has large blue parking signs which would make the novice driver follow and park there. They have x2 levels of underground car parking. So it could very well be there.

    Op here.

Thanks for all replies. Car hasn't turned up yet. Most car parks have been checked and nothing. Doesn't seem to have a ticket or even remember getting one so quite likely its outside the square somewhere. Going to try County Council car park in a bit.

    Thanks again for replies.

Ps, its a friends dad not mine!

I lost my car once and drove around for ages trying to find it, just as I was close to giving up I got out and stood up on a wall for a better view of the area, and there it was, right beside me!

Multi story car park across from the square near Smyth Toy Shop might be worth checking too.
