Besides a putting green, i don't think there's anywhere to practice.

Fota has a great set up at the Academy, or there's East Cork GC's driving range.

Both would be close enough to Castlemaytr

    thanks. Was thinking that.

Its the one thing that's against the place, not a big drawback, however.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 249 ✭✭pinseeker

I believe that there are plans in place to start work on a practice area.It will be over to the left of clubhouse as you come in.Think the mounds there will be moved and bit of the car park or something.

Would be nice addition to the place.

Just sitting having a drink in Castlemartyr Golf Club with the sun beaming down.

No one out on the course. I said I'd ask about green fees considering its nearly 6pm. €30 I was told (oh and no jeans!!, i have a golf pants in the carr). I'll give you €20, I said. No chance he said. Give me a buggie and I'll give you €30. I was laughed at.

I returned 15 minutes later to cancel my tee time for the open day in 2 weeks time!!

Why did you cancel your tee time, cause they wouldn't leave you off a tenner? A bit childish auld stock outta you.

Probably was but I didnt like his attitude more than anything.
So if he didnt want my €20 note yesterday, he wasn't getting my €30 in 2 weeks time.

Did it take a while to put all the clubs back in the bag once you threw them out :D (Toys and pram reference ;) )

Handy to know there's little haggling room, am planning a week down in the capital at present.
Unbeknownst to herself, this holiday may revolve around open days :)

Was there for a cup of coffee really.....because the weather was so fine, I said I'd ask to play.
Hadn't the toys and pram out before I asked :D

The money really wasnt the issue, it was his attitude that bothered me.

I'd have done the same if I were you I reckon - I don't think its being childish or throwing the toys out of pram. Its about where you choose to spend your hard earned €€€'s in these recessionary times. Someone laughing at me or treating me with a bad attitude wouldn't have me rushing to give them any business.

I was down there a couple of weeks ago and noticed a fair bit of the wood pannelling after been blown off the clubhouse surely this extra €20 you were prepared to give them could be put towards the fund to repair this as I think without repair it won't last another 6 months without major work needed to it.

    +1
probably just one stupid barman, doesn't realise his job is going south..!

Was passing Ballinrobe during the week, called in late for 9 holes, barman basically asked us how much we wanted to pay. Well worth the tenner!

Friend text earlier said he saw something online about membership in Castlemartyr for €700 but he didn't have anymore details.

    Anyone know anymore?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭mafc

Got an email today from My Golf News & €700 is correct

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭peepee

The joining fee is 700 or the sub is 700?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 787 ✭✭✭mafc

    Full membership €700

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 187 ✭✭peepee

I wonder is that guy Brady still there? He wasn't the most accommodating or business oriented in any dealings I had with him.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭big_drive

Im still doubtful that it's €700 for full membership without a joining fee. If it is correct I would be considering it

I'm surprised the sub wasnt reduced earlier, they have hardly any members in Castlemartyr .
I dont know how they are paying the bills with so few members,I presume it is under Nama ?

With such a small membership it would mean you'd be able to get out for a game when you want unlike some other courses .
Its also sand based so would be playable all year around.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,317 ✭✭✭big_drive

Will have to have a look into it. To me €700 for castlemartyr is the best deal you'll get in cork at present

€700 is the sub for Seniors. It's a €1000 for full membership.
Joining fee is still there but has been reduced to €2000 that can be paid monthly.

Reganovski is correct, I got an email confirming no change.
Joining fee of 2k is still there.

rang during the week with 4 of us interested in joining. Entrance money was reduced from 2500 to 2000 and the annual sub reduced from 1250 to 1000.

Entrance money can be spread out over 2 years.

there's absolutely no movement or haggle room on the entrance money. Alas, we're going elsewhere as a result. I contacted virtually every club in Cork and a few outside Cork to see prices, deals etc. A lot of places have come down in fairness over the last 2-3 years.

We are looking at Kinsale, Mallow, Lee Valley perhaps. I got West Waterford for 250 and Dungarvan for 300 but others lads not interested in travelling from Cork City anymore.

They must be losing money hand over fist down there .

I played there a few years ago on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in the summer and the course was deserted ,I had the course to myself .:)

I think I counted 50 members on the notice board .

Maybe if they they take in a new member they might have enough money and be able to afford to replace some of the boards thats have come off the side of the clubhouse, it looks a shambles and has been that way for about a year now.

What is funding the running of the course? NAMA?

Members at 50 equals 50k revenue next year
Yearly green fees revenues max would be ?????? Any guesses
Whats the minimum you can run a golf club for?

They don't even have their opens on the GUI site.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

I think Castlemartyr make there money from societies and green fees. They took in some members last year who were very low handicappers so they could represent the club in Barton Shield, Senior Cups etc.

I'd be very interested in joining it alright but not for 2k entrance money I'm afraid.

Bailey 99 .. youghal do a great deal for new members and depending on where u r based its not that far from Cork I think its about €350 in yr 1. Very friendly club, rarely closed and well maintained.

I'd be interested in castlemartyr too as i really like the course but the €2k would be hard to stomach

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,197 ✭✭✭bailey99

To be honest, i wouldn't join Youghal. If travelling down that direction, I'd go to Dungarvan, West Waterford or the Gold Coast if I was.

I was member of Gold Coast for 2 years, superb course. I think Dungarvan is the best of the three courses down there mind. Great test.

At a guess its probably out of his hands and more in the hands of a Nama appointee (receiver).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3 peter17

dear receiver... I'm willing to part with 1000 yo yo's of my hard earned cash (almost 300 more than most clubs in area) what's on offer? they still want to be seen as elite. I take the kids for walks frequently around the resort n the course is prob the most un played in Ireland... there's a lovely club house, gym in the hotel...thats if they want the business... blarney n balykisteen are two I know of with very good course/gym (n bar) packages... but too far to avail of...

At 1K Castlemartyr is probably reasonable value when you take the course condition into account- good greens, level tees etc. It is certainly at a lower cost than some of the "traditional" Cork clubs (Cork, Douglas etc.) but you need to take into account the extra travel cost to Castlemartyr (depending on where you live). The only other question you need to consider is the availability of teetimes for members- big emphasis on green fee income in this club.
The 2K entrance fee is expensive especially when you consider that it is not a members club- could fold at any time! Douglas GC entrance fee down to 7/6.5K this year as they want to get more members into their club and they will probably succeed.
Some clubs still have not realised that the good old days are gone, probably forever and that they need to provide value for money in order to retain or to generate new members.

Rough has been let grow back over the past year. Play your straightest club off the tees
    or you'll lose balls.

Has it gone up? They are advertising at €1100 with €100 of that as credit in resort shop/bar. I didn't think they were still asking for hello money.
