What's going on around the county

Could we have an event's thread like Galway City does? There's heaps going on in my community (Athenry). The county can sometimes be a bit city-centric so it'd be great if we could share what's going on a little closer to home???

Great! Well here's my first post...

Athenry Tidy Towns Committee, together with the local schools, clubs and associations, will be going ahead with planting 9,300 native trees on Friday 22nd March and Saturday 23rd March, as part of the “One Million Trees in One Day” project.

On Friday it's from 12pm between Athenry and Derrydonnel roundabout. On Sat Morning, folks meet in the Mart from 8:45pm. All are welcome actually and if you live in the area it's a great way to meet new people. We advise folk to bring their own shovel (with name and phone number on it).

Free guided walk at Derryclare Wood this Sunday

The Galway branch of the Irish Wildlife Trust will host a guided walk at Derryclare Wood in Connemara at 11.30am this Sunday, October 20. The walk will be led by local National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Dermot Breen. Derryclare Nature Reserve is a 19 hectare protected area on the shores of Derryclare Lough, best known for its old oak woodland. In 2005, 19 red squirrels were introduced to the wood as part of a translocation project, and they have been doing well ever since.

The wood is located on the shores of Derryclare Lough in the Inagh Valley. From Galway, take the N59 towards Clifden. After Recess turn right towards Letterfrack on to the R344. The entrance to the wood is about 2.5km up on the left hand side.
