Is the race route marked in The Phoenix Park to allow a trial run before the race day?
I haven't run this race before and am not too familiar with the route but would like to do a dry run in the next week or so

    Thanks

Does anybody know when the closing date for online entry is for this? Can't find it on the website. Thanks

They're taking entries right up until the day before the race, once they don't fill up before then.

Can't wait for this, going to be my first 10k event after doing a few 5k events at the tail end of 2012.

Anyone get their pack? I thought the number would be adhesive, didnt think I'd have to tie it on with some string! Kinda cheap.

This just went up on their Facebook page, making a liar out of me in the process:

Newsy news! Heads up to all! Dates and times - to have a pack posted to you, runners must enter by 10am on Thursday 28 March. After that, entries will remain open until 9am on Monday 8 April, but packs *must* be collected from Life Style Sports in Blanchardstown on Thursday 11, Friday 12 or Saturday 13 April.

    Pretty standard.

Every race I have done in the last 3 years has had a number that is attached with safety pins.

Anyone know if AAI numbers are to be collected on lifestyle along with all others?
Just wondering as my club is submitting all entries after the 28th race pack deadline.

Didn't Bekele run this lat year in a savage time? Anyway, I came across a youtube clip of him running through what I believe was the park. The camera is in front of him. Great clip. Don't have time to look and post now. Anyone else seen it, and if so, can they confirm it was from last year in the park?

Kenenisa Bekele finished in 27.49, smashing Craig Mottram's previous best of 28.35. I think the first video is the one you were thinking of.

I haven't got youtube access at the moment. The one I saw was super. Really showed the speed and flow of Bekele. Up close! Will check it later.

Hello! Is there anyway of finding out your number before the race, if you're an AAI entrant. Can't find it in the FAQ on their site.

I was going to just pick it up on the day, but my club are asking for our numbers & I dodn't know mine yet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 46,825 ✭✭✭✭Mitch Connor

stupid that you cant give your race entry to someone else. the other half isn't doing it with me on Sunday (new year's resolution!) so that is just €30 wasted now when I have two mates that would gladly take it off me and join me for the run.

Can't think of any good reason for not allowing someone else to take the place.

    Very annoying.

Don't think so. :) I can't even find confirmation of entering last year in my emails. You should have entered your AAI number when registering though so should be easy enough for them to find you?

Race finishes on Furze road, starts on Chesterfield so maybe Castleknock. Would avoid driving to this event at all costs to be honest. You be better off getting a bus from town to Chapelizod gate/Islandbridge gate/NCR gate and jogging to the start line. It's a short jog, won't have a negative affect on your race at all.

Then the person who is taking the number won't sign up and pay separately so they'll miss out on 30 quid.

Normally try to park along coynigham road, but you need to be there early enough.

Dont mind goin in early for this race though. Atmosphere is always pretty nice in my experience.

The other person isn't going to sign up though. So it is just €30 wasted. Yes, it is €30 in their pocket but I think it is a crap way of treating the people doing. What does it matter to them if it is Mary or Michael running - the spot was paid for.

afaik they are required by insurance to know the names of the participants so they can give the correct names and medical information to medical personnel.

And it makes a difference if Michael runs a time that would win Mary a prize

I know it's a headache for the organisers if they allowed people to swap names associated with numbers but if they can still take registrations the day before the event then surely one should be allowed to pass their number onto a friend. Obviously the insurance company don't get the list until the last minute!

Anyway, I'll probably get given out to for this but I'd pass the number on and make sure the "bandit" fills their own details on the back of the number where applicable. If something does go wrong the medical people won't be radioing back to HQ for entrants details, they'll check the back of the number first.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,818 ✭✭✭nerraw1111

Is that true about the insurance?

An easy way to get around the medical information line is for every runner to write their name on the back of the number, along with details of next of kin etc. Problem solved, plus it's quicker than looking up a database in times of emergency.

In a race like the Great Run, can't see any moral argument for not swapping numbers given the cost.

Not too sure about a race the size of GIR (~10,000 people) but I've organised smaller races and had insurance for 999 people and insurance form didn't stipulate I had to hand in final list etc

Don't know about GIR specifically, but istr Hard Worker saying it was a requirement for the marathon. And Condo131 talking about a situation where it it was important.
Obviously for the race organisers, the main thing is that if transferring numbers is allowed they will sell fewer entries.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 20,366 Mod ✭✭✭✭RacoonQueen

I don't get why entries aren't transferable in running races when they are in triathlon?

The Warriors run in Sligo allows transfers and I'm sure excuseless said his eco run allowed transfers.

Surely something like warriors and triathlons would have more complex insurance policies? If they can do it...

Insurance doesn't affect races offering refunds anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,704 ✭✭✭✭RayCun

Triathlons often have limited spaces available. The organisers can't sell any more entries even if they didn't allow transfers.

Exactly. Proving it's nothing to do with 'insurance' and all about making as much money as possible.

This also doubles as National ten km, demanding course but a good test. I assume Kenneally and Byrne are favourites, should they run as planned, anyone else running that may challenge them, Mary Cullen?Scullion/Hehir/Sweeney??
Not much in line of a preview of field anywhere yet ..

First road race since last July for me due to a plague of injuries, ran 34 odd last year ,gone way back from that now but enjoy the buzz of the day so will slog around.

You too! Will it be a first outing for your club top? How are you feeling? Prepared etc?

I don't mean to make excuses in advance, but I've been on antibiotics for a chest infection all week so I'm not expecting a stellar performance! (Though I am hoping for a miracle recovery)

Oh dear, that's awful - I know exactly how that feels. Its not a nice prep at all...hope you are feeling better and will able to give it a decent shot on Sunday!

Second time out after the Raheny 5 in January but have a feeling this will be a little different?!?! New ground me thinks! Feeling okay but anything can happen between now and then though!

Best of luck with final preparations! :-)

Nice enough day for it today. Wandered around in 53-odd minutes. Not too bad considering my very limited training over the past few weeks (okay months).

Atmosphere seemed strangely flat, though. Can't put my finger on why.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭irlirishkev

The waves were nicely segregated today. That was a nice touch.
Overall, very well organised. Nice to get bottles of water instead of those crappy cups.
The wind was nasty in places, and the sun was surprisingly warm in others.
The finish/meet/bag area was a total mudbath unfortunately, but not much you can do about that.

I heard someone announce that the results would be up later today.

I enjoyed it. The second half of the course was tough going, but I'm happy with my time and I enjoyed the atmosphere. I also loved being able to see the elite women start. I'm just sorry I didn't get to see the elite men.

    My tuppence worth...

Considering there were 10,000 participants it was a well organised race. Thanks to the volunteers for their time. A decent swag bag at the end as well with 2 packs of sweets, 1 bottle of poweraid, 1 bottle of water, tech t-shirt, medal, and lucozade energy bar type thing.

Ran it in 42mins so happy to see my training is paying off. Forgot to set GPS on the Garmin :(. As expected the first km was a bit crowded but it's no harm in learning how to use your elbows where necessary. 2nd half of the course was a little tougher with the gentle inclines and, in parts, the lumpy tarmac. Only really exposed to the wind on a 500m stretch after the 4km mark.

I live nearby so run a part of this course most weekends, so I'm not sure if I'd do it again next year. Also, as previously flagged, it's a bit pricey and would prefer to help a local club raise funds.
