Do they still give you milk and a sandwich in primary school?

It just randomly popped into my head :pac: corned beef sandwiches and milk... oh and hot cross buns!! Man, we're talking years ago.

Some schools do, some don't. Mine used to give out just milk. Little Avonmore boxes.

The local creamery supplied milk at very cheap prices but it was paid for ever term. Cost very little, probably were getting it for cost price

On winter days it would be frozen into ice outside!

Never got sandwiches but we did get butter vouchers

Hot cross buns... that brings back memories. The girls in our school used to let them fall on the tarmac before bringing them to class sometimes

Ah memory lane!
We used to get cheese sandwiches and milk every day except wednesday which was corned beef sandwich day and friday which was current bun day.

I think nowadays they all go to the chipper for their lunch or to Spar for a chicken roll. We were locked in at breaktime. Probably just as well!

Man I loved the corned beef and the rubber ham sandwiches! And the milk cartons! (although I remember the little mini milk bottles as well )

Don't think they were hot cross buns, think just regular currant buns. I don't like currants so used to pick the currants out, the rest of the bun was lovely

Oh god I just remembered the eeky cheese. I used to throw that in the bin and eat just butter sandwiches that day!!!! (ugh!)

The milk is still going anyway. Was in TP last week and nearly all the kids were having it...it's not free though. Hasn't been free in yonks I'd imagine. Was never free for me anyway.

Yeah it was just current buns. Hot cross buns my hoop!
Loads of butter on the sambos too. They came in big plastic sleeves.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it was in our school in South Donegal. Donegal Creameries little 250ml cartons if memory serves. It was imperitive that they were taken in off the wall outside as quick as possible incase it froze/soured depending on time of year.

We didn't get any sandwiches though

I hated getting milk because it was a big glass bottle and you had to drink it all if you wanted to go on your break..cue children drinking fast then running around, not the best mix

I can still taste it can never just drink milk by itself now

Used to live near Mountjoy's gate and they used to get all sorts of milk and cream delivered there at 7am.

A school I used to teach in gave free lunches. €86000 they spend a year to feed the kids. For a good lot of the kids it was the only square meal they would see all day.

Most school pupils nowadays OP get a bun and milk, but the school my child goes to is now pushing for a breakfast club, which are only available to disadvantaged schools, so you have to be in a disadvantaged area to qualify.


Take the above with a pinch of salt because I'm off my face right now and I can hardly see straight, let alone properly source the information for you, that's just off the top of my head from a board of management meeting last month when we were discussing the issue.

we used to get those small 200ml cartons that had the puncture hole on the top right where you put in a straw, we never got straws tho, we would pierce the hole with a pencil and try to splash someone when you pierced it. Used to hate the smell of milk "sweat" you know when you held the carton for a while drinking and smell off your hands after

yeah I didn't have a choice! after awhile I use to try sneak away before they gave it out, i think they stopped in first class though?

Haha, I remember that - my first primary school we got the cheese or jam sandwhiches, corned beef on wens and currant bun on fridays, complemented with a fine serving of warm / sour milk in glass bottles depending on the season. Remember the milk sitting in little crates by the teachers desk all morning, either defrosting or going off, and they'd always give you an nicely clotted left over one to drink while you waited if your mam had to come in for chat after school:pac: the school I went to after just did the paid cartons with the punch hole that were stored in what they called the "wet area"

Did anyone else have benny bunny? It was drinkable yogurt that came in the same small cartons like the milk and it had a pink rabbit on the front of it. F uckin gorgeous tack that was.

thought about this last week while passing my old infant school....no memory of food but we did get those 250ml bags of milk, with a straw....though you were fecked if the straw wasn't glued to the bag

in the EU butter/beef mountain days the mother got butter and beef vouchers....huge chunks of prime beef.
