its a discussion forum, not an I get jokes forum, if you need thanks on your post for to have it spelled out for you that someone thinks something you said was funny or whatever or thanks for replying to me, well time to move on.
It just creates a really lazy way to agree with a post too, but the thing is you may agree with certain points made in a post and not others in it, but lots find themselves just thanking the post. post your opinion and let it stand on its own.

Its like canned laughter on a crap sitcom tbh now, its just getting crap and abused.

    down with thanks I say!

    *dodges stage crowd*

I purposely avoided in b4, I could think of lots that some will no doubt say, but that wouldnt be any fun now would it if I headed them off at the pass :P

is it not intended as a method for people to agree without consuming unnecessary bandwitdh?

Which is ironically all this thread achieves.....

But people say things and you agree with them so you thank them
    Or
Someone says something that you would have said and so instead of repeating it you thank them
    Or
    Funny/witty remarks you thank them

There's lots of reasons to have the thanks button there. I'm just too lazy to think of anymore.

I don't thank posts I agree with but when someone makes a post that I agree with in a really clear and concise manner, or at least better than I could, I feel obligated to thank that post (sometimes I thank posts I don't agree with but like the argument none-the-less).

It's a way of showing my support for an argument without repeating what the original poster said (which would just bloat the discussion).

Or when someone makes a dick comment it's great to see the person who replies to them with a condescending or witty remark get dozens of thanks.

    Makes me feel good inside.

Iirc, it was originally introduced to stop people posting +1s. In a discussion before thanks, people would agree with a good post by quoting it and typing "+1", so often half the page of a thread would be unnecessary sh1te. Now the thanks function is a catch-all for good posts and jokes.

Long live the thanks function, I say

    I cried

but at the grammar not the idea, should I thank this ?

    decisions / decisions

OP - you really only want useful comments

And we could do with a "no thanks" button or maybe a "do not want" one

Or we could do it like a chess ranking system, where the amount of thanks you get depends on the difference in ranking so that thanks from younglings don't count for squat

I think the whole "thanks", "likes", whatever thing should be done away with tbh. I'd much rather see the rep system that was used on other sites brought back, as in good posters had a higher reputation level and the +1's were hidden as such, so nobody knew who "thanked" their post and there weren't a wall of +1 posts that followed.

Take for example a post I made the other day, one simple line-

"Quorn and a horn?", got an embarrassing amount of thanks, I mean, sometimes I post serious, sometimes I post something for a giggle, but jaysus, it wasn't THAT funny I thought to myself.

I think "thanks" and "likes" functions encourage people to seek validation rather than posting an actual opinion on a discussion site, they're more concerned with their thanks count and so will post something they think will get them loads of thanks rather than what might be a true reflection of their opinion on the subject of the thread.

It almost becomes like everyones a smart àrse on the internet or an attention seeker and I personally think it takes away from the forum and doesn't give a true reflection of the poster, but rather their comedic ability, or lack thereof in most cases.

It was 23 thanks funny. Not 47 thanks funny.

Edit - 48 thanks. Thought I'd add one to embarrass you further.

The number of thanks isn't an indication of how funny something is, it's an indication of how many people thought it was funny regardless of how funny they individually think it is.

Ah no I get that much alright (tbh the post was just the first thing I thought of off the top of my head), but what I guess I mean is it's something that's already started on facebook, the "1,000 likes" type status things, and I just wonder if it's a "I'll thank this because everyone else did" kind of thing, may possibly look like I'm over thinking things here but it's something I've noticed happening on boards a long time now-

POTD usually going to a post in YLYL being a classic example where there's no discussion allowed in the thread, yet it's the most validated post on a discussion forum??

no thats part of it, people are sheep mostly, after a certain amount of thanks, the ones who dont find it funny will be going back to thank from peer pressure!

its a momentum which builds, similar thing with canned laughter in crap sitcoms, you hear people laughing so you are more likely to find it funny even though you are the only one watching it in your house, the rest is a laughter track on an audio feed from the tv!

A rep system wouldn't work here at all. People would make it personal unfortunately.

I love the thanks function personally.
