Awesome. The Nenagh lads are putting in a TTT on the Saturday for this event. As far as I know the Sunday is the same format as last year. This is brilliant. If I can get a few lads together I'll enter a team and if not it will be great entertainment to go watch. It's a great route and there'll be lot's of good vantage points for spectators becasue it's a wide, quiet (since the M7 opened) main road with big hard shoulders most of the way and plenty of lay-by type areas.
Just awesome to see this kind of entertainment being brought to the ordinary cyclist/cycling fan in Ireland. I hope it goes well.
Kudos to Rene/MichaelM or whoever is behind it. I can't believe there isn't more chat on here about it (maybe I've missed the thread!). Here's the link to the info:

Signed up for the Classic this morning. Not sure about the TTT, not really my forté, but could be fun.

edit: UCD will stomp all over the TTT, obv.

Wouldn't mind signing up to this, must see how I'm fixed closer the time!

I presume that full TT bikes are allowed/reccomended. Is it silly to even ask?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,505 ✭✭✭colm_gti

I don't know if I'd feel comfortable doing a TTT on my TT bike, you'd want to trust your team mates not to tap their brakes unexpectedly anyway...

In fairness to Rene and Mikey Butts they are putting some amount of work into this race(s). I train with them 2-3 times a week and Rene misses more sessions cause if meetings with council etc etc. about planning the race and street entertainment/stalls. I hope lots turn up to support it and bring some business to our little town. Like him or not He puts some amount of time into promoting cycling and credit where it's due. BTW I don't race for his team so I'm not a promotional tool for this race. Hope to see ye there. Bit undecided about doing the tt the day before the A3 race with regards to legs etc-any thoughts peeps?

I should probably have mentioned that I am not involved at all either, I just live 1/4 mile off the TTT route and 1 mile off part of the RR route so it's pretty cool for me to have it so close.
Re legs, feck your legs :P. How many races will you do this year where you have a chance to enter a TTT? Unless you are planning a very quick promotion to A2 and need the win Sunday why not go out and enjoy your sport. I see it as a chance to try something different and not just on a Wednesday during the summer with your friends....this is actually part of something pretty big. That's my 2cents and (before ye jump on me) I know it's not for everyone!!!

Is the Des Hanlon on in Carlow the same day? Anyone got a route for this Visit Nenagh. I know there's a pic available on the site. Assuming this is hilly?

54K for Cat4s - is that really 'A Classic', especially when the route isn't overly hard?

You should have no trouble winning it then.

dont forget, A4 is a beginner category within CI , all those Cat 4 riders have till April 1st to upgrade themselves...if te wish to do so....but must of them are happy enough to do the shorter stuff.....and the route is not that easy

route is challenging , not in laps, just (depending on race) big loops around Nenagh, more info about the route soon on the web

    Hey Rene,
Thought you said you were gone off the Boards thing! Just to let OPs know the A4 route might appear short on paper but the climb up Portroe hill and the five 'sisters' between Ballina and N7 will keep people awake. Did the A4 last yr and enjoyed it. Taking the advice of OPs Think I might as well do the tt as I've no hope/time/talent and many more things to get to A2. Now time to convince the rest of the lads they have none of the above either. 😬

only if it is your first licence of the year. if you allready have a licence (eg a4) you have to stay A4 until you get the pints to upgrade.

You can apply to CI for an upgrade. this off topic tho...

Loved this race last year, a great event.............I should have done better but gave it my all.Sadly due to other-life activities i wont make it this year. However i would highly reccomend a trip to tipp for this event,And no its not easy, the A4 is testing and having rode parts of the A3 route a couple of years ago, id say its worth its name as a probable classic! As for the A2/A1 route.................In the words of P Flynn............Try it sometime:D

It was discussed in another thread a few days ago, and the conclusion was that if you currently have a licence for 2013, you cannot upgrade it under the amnesty.

I wrote that on my mobile while getting into bed last night hence the shortness and poor grammar.
I thought the last thing morana said was that you can apply to CI and "ask" for an upgrade, totally separate to the amnesty. Maybe I mis-read it. I can't find the thread now.

Big crowds lining the streets of Nenagh, great support, only moment most of us will ever feel like we're in the TDF.

With regards to the TTT, are the members of the team limited to one category? i.e. do all members in a particular team need to be A3 only or can there be a mixture of A3 and A4 riders in each team?
Also, would there be CI points awarded for this event?
    Regards

nope, the TTT can be a mixture of Cats (1,2,3 or 4) per team, doesn't matter really, once they have a racing licence....as for points ....dont know if CI awards points for events like this.. but will find out for you ! And don't forget....we are the "pilot" of the pre entry scheme from CI....its simple...and handy....

The Paris-Roubaix inspired Visit Nenagh Classic trophy is cut from a slate quarry which forms one of the challenging climbs on the route. Photo shows the sponsors (Killoran Slate) hand cutting the slab for this year's trophy at the quarry yesterday.

I see a profile for the TTT, but can't find any for the road races. Anyone got a pre-made one?

Or if the routes are the same as last year, I can dig out someone's Strava record.

Good to see the TTT event being held, hope its supported, it something id like to see as a championship event some day, not sure how realistic that is however. I agree with @buffalo's post way back, UCD have this in the bag. Im hoping the Nic Roche Junior team will push them hard but their restricted gearing might be an issue in what is a power event. Maybe Murphy Surveyors will get a strong team together? Would be nice to see a few squads turn up.

@buffalo Hope you find what you need here

A few other points: Don't forget this is a race where if you bring your partner/kids etc there will be something for them to do while the race is in progress, this was one of the main considerations when this event was devised. There will be a famiy cycle, just 8Km so ideal for the little ones (and they get to finish down the traffic free main street and under the "finish" banner). The town will also host it's biggest ever food and craft market as well as a number of activities specifically aimed at the younger ones. Also worth noting that the surrounding coffee shops will be open. Don't worry though - plenty of notice will be given when the races are approaching the finish line, so they won't miss your moment of glory!

The A3 is crazy tough in my opinion, rode a few of the hills last week and it's a proper hard course. Great respect to anyone who completes it, the man who wins it will be a worthy winner.

Is that all the Juniors first in the A3 list? 30 Juniors, then 70 seniors?

There are far too many names to fear even just in the juniors... Dunbar, Foley, Bruton, Sadler. And I see a late addition of Mr JJ Breheny - great race to make the debut!

Apologies for the delay - www.visitnenagh.net - click on route book.

For anyone in the area - the TTT tomorrow should be really interesting - it starts/finishes on the old N7 - to find it; from the Nenagh side simply follow the signs to Limerick but at the main roundabout where you join the M7 to Limerick or Dublin simply take the old Limerick road (signposted Birdhill).

If coming from Dublin/Limerick on the M7 - take exit 26 and look for the sign to Birdhill - the large inflatable arch will be visible from about 12 pm anyway.
There is a nice forecast for tomorrow and a great lineup for the TTT (how will the top Dutch club cycling team fare against the best we have to offer? How will the Irish Youth team perform - should be really interesting). I will post results as soon as they are available tomorrow (approx 4.00pm).

If travelling for the race on Sunday the best option is to take exit 24 from the M7 as the Abbey Court Hotel (race HQ) is pretty much the first building as you enter the town.

Update - An Post rider Ronan McLoughlin has confirmed his participation on Sunday (personally thrilled with this!)

Finally - remember, this is a great race to bring your partner or kids to, they will be well entertained.
