Physio Awkwardness - Experiences

I started back playing soccer and gaelic football after the winter several weeks ago. I went from doing nothing for three months to about 5 very intense training sessions and matches on bad and hard hard in 6 days. Needless to say my legs struggled.

I ended up with a pretty bad pain in my groin. At first, I thought it would just go, especially because it seemed to go after a few days. However, after any small bit of running the pain kicks up again and when it gets really bad I can barely lift my leg. It's really effecting my performances and after starting off really well, I'm getting worse and worse with each passing match.

Now I have to go to the physio anyway because I also sprained my ankle on the same leg so I was planning on just saying about my groin to them as well. However, the pain is in a really awkward poisition, right at the top of my leg, right on the inside of my groin.

When I go to the doctor I've no problem with the whole "full" check up but that's mainly because he means to and he says it to me before. I just don't like the idea of the physio rubbing away at me for 20 minutes and I'm struggling to keep my balls in. I also don't think my local clinic has a male physio.

So basically I wanted to know other people's experiences with awkward injuries like this at the physio. Is there anything different they do? I know they're professionals but it's not really in the job description

I had a hip injury ages ago and the chiropractor had to put his hand inside my jocks to get at it, strong no homo... to be honest it was too painful to be awkward.. the worst thing in my opinion is lying down on one of those leather table thingys shirtless then getting up after a rough rub and leaving a big sweat patch... human snail trail.

Believe me if he needs to give a sports massage, the last thing you'll care about is him going near your junk. You'll be I'm too much pain.

My sports massage told me to never get lazy with foam rolling.

I had a groin injury from playing football, so will let you know about my experience.

Went to a physio, was female, she did some massage to loosen up the area. This consisted of applying pressure to that muscle that goes right up to the crotch. There was no weird or uncomfortable feeling from either of us, and it did help a lot. I was given some exercises to do and it has improved vastly.

I think that groin problems are common enough, and physio's have probably seen everything, so I wouldn't worry about potential uncomfortable situations. Wear a pair of tight boxers and you will be grand.

Never even thought of that, good idea. Should stop my balls and pubes coming out into the open :P

Too right. Any physio I've ever been to has had me close to tears with the pain of their "massage".

I've had a lot of groin massages over the years from various physios, male and female. It's a problem area for me. They've all been great and very professional. As mentioned above, wear tight boxers to keep everything in, after that you'll be in too much pain to be thinking about the awkwardness of the situation. They'll be well used to working on the area, I wouldn't worry about it.

Working on the adductors and the groin area is a common one for sports massage so its not something they ain't seen before.

I know with my clients 95% come to me in either running shorts with an inside lining or tight boxers. The ones that don't, I tend to put a hand towel across the area to create a barrier to make the client feel at ease and also keeping us from seeing anything we don't want to be seeing.

Regarding job description patient care is just as important as the treatment and knowledge itself. If a client doesn't trust you its very hard to work on the muscles as the body naturally resists

Thanks a million guys, great replies.

Just one more thing though. I was playing a match yesterday and had training tonight and it appears I've twisted my other ankle. So now I'm going to the physio on Wednsday with two twisted ankles and a strained groin. I'm just wondering what is the story on bringing up more than one problem to the physio?

Usually when I go to the physio or doctor I only tell them one problem because I think that's all I'm paying for. However, this time I don't think I can ignore all these problems, especially since I think that one injury led to the other in this case. I think if I don't get them sorted, I'm going to miss the whole season.

So what is the policy on this, is it alright to bring up these three problems to the physio? And will they work on all three of them if I do?

Bring them up certainly 9/10 times even if you dont they will pick up on the issue. It depends on the therapist/physio regarding how they approach it after that but their job is to get you back injury free.

I would say let them know when you contact them also as it gives them a chance to free up more time. No point in them putting you in for an hour slot if there is 2 hours work. Atleast that way they can have an idea of what they are dealing with. I know I have had people in complaining with some injury but the root of the cause stems from somewhere else however you only learn that when you have the person on the table and as such you have to give yourself an allowance of time for this

They may not be able to treat all problems in one go and may opt for multiple sessions but to be honest this is down to who you go to. Look for someone who you know isn't just trying to make money off you but rather focusing on the treatment and getting to the bottom of your injury problems

From my experience, yes, that is no problem. I have had multiple injuries worked on in the same session.

For my physio anyway you are paying for a session to get whatever needs to be done, and not a set time.

I had to expose myself to two medics and a doctor yesterday, cause of my hernia.

I'm a living joke when it comes to medical situations about my balls, and cock. Anyway yesterday was no different, its 1 degrees here, and I had the smallest ice cock going. The flirty female medic was noticeably less flirty with me afterwards.... Moral of the story, it could always be worse!
