Intermittently sore shin injury not getting better - stopping me from runnning.

I was stuck quite hard (accidentally) on the outside edge of my right shin two weeks ago. It hurt quite a bit at the time but I walked it off, the pain went away and I got back to what I was doing.

Even since then I have been getting intermittent pains almost the entire length of my shin. Sometimes i feel no pain, sometimes it's quite sore to walk on and touch —kind of like a cold ache. It's particularly evident when I have been walking for a few minutes.

Have been putting off an x-ray or seeing a doctor because I'd rather not spend the money only and I assume there is little that can be done with this part of the leg beyond advising me to stay off it... which i am trying to do as much as possible.

But it's been two weeks now, there is no real improvement and I really want to get back to running (Just started running 3 months ago and really enjoying it but I have not been doing it since I hurt my leg).

Any suggestions? Should I see if I can get through an easy run on grass or sand? Or do I need to avoid running on it at all until it no longer hurts? Should I start cycling / swimming in the mean time?

    Appreciate any thoughts.
