12 string advice....

    Howdy guys, acquired a 90's hohner 12 string off a guy in work. It is in need of some TLC. Has only 6 strings on it at the moment and in fact they haven't been changed since 2002 according to the owner!!! :)

    So I intend to re-string it with the full compliment of 12 strings. I am wary however of the possibility of warping the neck by changing the tension after so long. Are there any special measures I need to take to avoid warping the neck? Or does anybody have any advice as regards stringing a 12 string in general?

    As ever, any help much appreciated.

    string her up!!

    you might need to tweek the truss rod after a couple of days after it's settled with the new tension.

    Much obliged, so I can go ahead without special precaution, which is nice because anything I've attempted other tha a re-string has not gone well;)

    don't forget to give it a nice polish when the strings are off.

    and a few drops of 3 in 1 oil on a rag rubbed into the fingerboard, then polished off.

    a wee drop of oil on the tuners wouldn't hurt either.

    Thanks a mill for the tips, it will certainly need a clean and polish. Out of interest, what do you reccommend for cleaning and polishing an acoustic guitar?

    samw as everything else, wire brush & detol!!

    Nah, as long as the varnish is intact, a quick buff with a baby wipe for really icky bits then a polish with mr sheen.

    Im not allowed to take them out of the shower, 'cause i never put them back ;)
