I'd like to start running, looking for advice please. Have been a regular walker for years, so not complete couch potato. Objectives are increased fitness and weight loss - 2 stones to lose. I tried to start a few months ago by walking 2 mins , then running for 30 seconds, and was doing ok until my knees started hurting so I gave up immediately out of fear of doing damage. Was wearing suitable runners bought specially in sports shop (asiics). I have had some lower back problems over the winter so unsure if this means I should or should not take up running.. am female, age 50. Thanks for any suggestions.

Any greens or pitches you can run around in your area? Could help reduce impact.

Also, by proper "running shoes," were they suggested after you had analysis done?

There's a running forum here specifically for running: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=972

Which may be able to provide more info regarding shoes.

thats good advice....would also suggest seeing a physio to get checked out.....good knee balance, no arthritis etc. at 50, or any age, dont run through the pain.

The " Couch to 5 K" app aeems to be hugely popular with loads I know, they all swear by it and a few recommended " Run Fat Bitch Run" book as well for motivating you to start running but I'm sure there's loads of other ways to start... I found company the best way, someone else with you to push you and vice versa... Good luck, small steps to start (well not literally !!!)..

Problems with knees might well be the runners you're using. I can't wear asics at all, they wreck my legs. I got my gait/pronation checked and now I run in brooks which are slightly heavier, but offer total support. Ambhibian King in Bray do gait checks and I have always find them very helpful; they don't try push the most expensive shoe, but rather what suit your foot. Best of luck though, when I took up running I could barely run from here to the front gate, but I've run a few marathons since! Do keep at it if you can, it's a great way to keep fit.

Thats really helpful - thank you! l didn't have any analysis, just went to local Lifestyle and asked for trainers suitable for running - really hoping thats the issue, as that would be easy to solve. And the board dedicated to running has a wealth of information - will spend some time reading it while it rains!
