    Hi folks,

Just a quick post to let you know that the second cycle4life will be taking place this year on the 4th of May 2013 in Dunboyne, Co. Meath.

Last year we attracted nearly 1,000 cyclists and raised over €150,000 for Temple Street Children's Hospital - this money was used to purchase lifesaving equipment. Last years cycle was very successful and we got great feedback and this year it will be even better.

The target for 2013 has been set even higher and we are hoping to raise a total of €200,000 to assist in the refurbishment of the top flat. Top Flat is home to some of Ireland’s sickest children, a high percentage of whom are Cystic Fibrosis patients. Although the care in this ward is second to none, the ward itself is cramped and in urgent need of re-development in order to keep up with medical standards and requirements.

This year we will also be joined by Dan Martin who has been working with the charity since its inception. Dan has already visited the ICU in Temple Street last November and is looking forward to the event. He will also be joined by yet another World Class rider, Colin Lynch current UCI World Champion in Pursuit and Time Trial and a member of the Irish Paracycling Team.

All cyclists who sign up to the medium and long route will receive a long sleeve cycling jersey:

    Hope to see you there

Great cause, really looking forward to this one.

Hope theres a massive turn out.

Thanks murphyebass, forgot to add the link, there is also a bit about what we bought last year here:

    http://www.cycle4life.ie/about-the-cycle/about-cycle4life/

I personally know from experience when my 10 month old was sick last Christmas how vital this equipment is - Its only when you are in the situation that you realise how much of a difference it makes.

Will deffo do this as someone who had a son who became very ill and ended up in Temple St. and the level of care was beyond fantastic.

Agreed, my first ever sportive last year and really enjoyed it, really well organised. My brother in law has volunteered me for something else on this day however, pity to miss the jersey

Long sleeve jersey, goody bag.....free massage afterwards!

I did this last year with a few other newbies and it turned out to be a great day besides the weather in the morning. Met a lot of great people and it was handy having a food and drink stop at the top of The Hill of Tara. Sambos and drinks at the end aswell that really filled the spot. I did the 67k and have registered again for this year.

    Stupid question really.

On the FAQ page it talks about sponsorship. Do you need to get sponsorship to ride in this sportive?

Maybe I sound like a Grinch! But I hate asking people for sponsorship money. It is a recession and people are always getting asked. I love the idea of paying the 80 euro and all of this going to the charity however.

You can pay for yourself if you want.

Is it usual for sportifs to have food/ drink stops at a halfway point?
I've never done one before and assumed if you were doing the shorter distance option (67k) you'd cycle the full distance without a midway pit stop?
And are sportifs nearly always connected to a charity?
Looking forward to cycling a few this year, this sounds like a good one.

Actually, just noticed the date is the same wknd as the Dundalk to Dublin leg of the 'Break the Cycle' cycle I'm doing, that's a shame.

    Hey folks...

Just a quick note to say that I'll also be doing this ride with Dan Martin. Your chance to ride with a current Paralympic Double World Champion AND a Garmin pro rider!!

The entry fee covers the ride and your jersey - and the proceeds ALL go to charity (thus the price). You do NOT have to raise additional sponsorship funds.

I urge you to register today if you're thinking of doing it. It WILL be a great day out!!

Is there a sponsorship card and where do I get it? I registered for the 65k. Looking toward to it.

Thanks for that Colin, great that you will be there and looking forward to a great day.

If anyone has any questions please post them here or pm me and I will repond asap.

Just to clarify, the minimum sponsorship is €79.99, that applies to the medium and long route. You can raise this money through sponsorship or pay yourself. If you wish to raise the money through sponsorship you can download a form or you can set up a mycharity page - this is an extremely handy way to raise the money.

The proceeds go to Temple Street Children's Hospital - this year we are looking to build on the €151,884.00 we raised last year and break the €200,000 mark.

Also, just to clarify, for the €79.99 you get:
    • An exclusive long sleeve race jersey
    • Mechanical support
    • Food stops during and at end of Cycle
    • Goody bag
    • Medal on completion
    • Use of the free massage tent also available at the end

We feel that it represents great value for money, especially when the money is going to a very worthwhile cause!

For those who wish to participate with their families there is a family route which costs €9.99 per person or €29.99 for a family (up to 4 people).

We hope to see you there for what will be a great event!

What if you have no interest in the jersey? Could a reduced rate be offered?

I was think of doing this ride, but I'm put off by the mandatory helmet requirement: it isn't supposed to be a race, so what's that all about?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭blahblah06

Ehh 100s of riders so I'd say the helmet issue is safety?
I did it last year and going it again hubs year
    Can't wait

I would imagine it's for insurance reasons. I doubt there's a mass start sportive in the country that doesn't require helmets.

    From http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/bike-blog/2013/mar/04/compulsory-helmets-charity-bike-rides
Event insurance is the reason most often quoted by organisers to justify the compulsory helmet rule. But this isn't necessarily the case, says Chris Peck from the national cycling charity CTC.

"I'm pretty sure that this is a consequence of organisers simply doing a "copy and paste" job from other event organisers' terms and conditions, rather than any sort of rigorous risk assessment," he said.

"CTC events do not insist upon helmets and our insurers have never raised this as an issue – so it's not actually an issue of insurance if organisers go directly to a sensible insurer."

Not for the purpose of arguing, just curious. Why would you have a problem wearing a helmet?

I have no more problem wearing a helmet on a bike as I do out walking or in a car or bus, but why put a pointless restriction on a charity event like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,305 ✭✭✭blahblah06

Because its a CHARITY event and they wouldn't want the exposure of someone been injured and receive bad press?

Helmet is a requirement as safety is paramount and we don't want to see any bad accidents that could have been prevented by wearing a helmet.

Don't forget that Dan Martin will be there, this is an opportunity to ride with Irelands top pro cyclist. Im sure that a lot of you have seen his his heroic performance in Catalunya and this is a opportunity to cycle with him. Not only that but you will also get to ride with the current Paralympic Double World Champion, Colin Lynch.

This is going to be a cracking event and anybody who attended last year will testify to that.

Personally know 2 people who are only alive due to their helmets so I can understand why this is a requirement, especially when there are a lot of cyclists of varying experience.

Really looking forward to this, done the 140km one last year and really enjoyed it. Very well organised and plenty of food stops plus the massage at the end was a nice plus.

Normally a helmet is required for organised events as a condition of insurance. Now can we not turn this thread into a discussion on helmets -we currently have another thread where you can do that

Hi folks, nearly a month to go until the cycle4life and to mark it, we are giving away a shiny new 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 for anybody who registers before April 12th (this includes anyone who has registered to date).

You can register today without paying, leaving you with a month to raise it and pay on the day, simples!

Don't forget Dan Martin and Colin Lynch will be there on the day so here is your chance to cycle with them.

    Hope to see you there.

Can we pick up the jerseys before the day?

We have the medium size in and they can be collected from the main warehouse in Fonthill or your local branch.

The rest of the jerseys are due in Wednesday and we will be notifying all registrants as soon as they come in. They are really nice jerseys and very good quality.

Just wondering if there are any women out there planning on doing the medium route? Also, what sort of times do people do the medium route in? Don't want to be left way behind and the only woman there!! :-)

No idea on your 1st question but a group of us are doing it and plan to average 20/22km an hour It's not a race!

Great :-) I think that sort of pace should be ok for me :-)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,559 ✭✭✭RoboRat

Did it last year and there were plenty of women, I distinctly remember a woman doing the 147km on a hybrid with a basket on the front - I was damn jealous of the basket when I was trying to pull a gel out of my back pocket for sustenance and she has a enjoying a lovely ham and cheese sandwich with a flask of tea.

Is anyone doing the long route this weekend? Thinking of doing it over the medium route but never did over 80km before.
Anyone looking for a bit of company along the route

Yeah, I'll be out there. Don;t think there is any danger of dying of loneliness tho, with 1000+ plus registered so far...

I'd be happy to gang up with any boardsies on the ride, dunno if the pace might be too much for an auld lad like me, but I'll be riding under the Team Skelington banner, and I respond to shouts of "hey, Ro!y" or "hey, Rory!" or even "Hipster scum!"

Doing long route tomorrow, really looking forward to it.

I always have problems with not eating enough on long cycles, what would people recommend for tomorrow, eat every hour?? every half hour??

    I reckon I can do the 143 in around 5 - 5 1/2 hours

I always have problems with not eating enough on long cycles, what would people recommend for tomorrow, eat every hour?? every half hour??

I aim for 90g of carbs per hour with 50-60g of this from energy drinks and rest from solid food. I start with 2 full bidons and aim to drink 250ml per half hour which is easy to keep track of. I also have my wife's lovely banana bread for solid food:).

I have that in a Gillet, fecking great top! Wore it last year to the event and had a lot of people asking where I got it.

Will see if I wear it again or wear the long sleeve I got for the event, its pretty nice but if its anyway hot I will have to wear short sleeves.

    See you there!

Don't do what I did last year, I was only really starting off at cycling and done the 147km. I was told that you should take and energy gel every hour but they neglected to say that I shouldn't take too many (plus I was also taking energy drinks)... needless to say, I was out for over 6 hours and when I got home exhausted I couldn't sleep.... for 2 days!

Where exactly is the parking for this. I'd like to get it in the Sat-Nav today, I'm a slow starter in the mornings and liable to end up in Dunboyne or Duleek instead of Dunshaughlin.

Thanks. But I'm still not sure:confused:. The garmin.connect link on the website shows it starting and finishing at the M3 Parkway but the mapmyride route shows it starting and finishing in Main Street, next to the Parochial house!

    Which is it?
