    Should men wear kilts?
Do you think they are daft or sexy?
Would you date a man who occasionally wears a kilt?
Would you be upset in the man in your life bought one?

I don't mind them, but I do hate the childish carryon where some - SOME - women think it's a giggle to lift them up in the street

I like them, yeah. I don't think my husband would wear one though, definitely not at the moment. :)

I really don't like them, unless being worn for a Scottish wedding or ceremony they make me cringe. They are just not a good look when being worn with a t shirt, jumper, etc. Either the man needs to be wearing the full formal garb for an occasion or they look ridiculous.

http://www.utilikilts.com/ do a range which are not tartan or formal wear.

I hate any type of traditional wear. Lederhosen and similar are the most annoying but kilts are not much better. At best traditional wear should be reserved for a few folk events but for everything else peopke should wear something that wasn't around centuries ago.

Jeans are around since 1873. :P

I dunno, I just like when people wear things that are outside of the norm. :) I saw a full on punk last week, spiked mohican, the works. It was refreshing and nicely nostalgic.

...They are probably worse looking, is that's even possible. I just think they look silly, I've no idea why. It's something to do with how the straight line of the kilt looks and breaks up the shape with big men's boots, etc. Something about that really bugs me!

Kilts are not outside norm. It's traditional wear. Full on punk I don't mind. Men wearing skirts I don't mind. For me the traditional wear outside certain events is a bit hillbilly and that includes kilts.

Err.. do men wear kilts for every day things? I thought they were just used for special occasions, or if you're just having a laugh like on a stag night.

I was at a wedding, wearing a kilt and a tipsy mother of the groom comes over to me. She happens to be scottish. For best effect, read this in Mrs Doubtfires accent.

Grooms Mother: "I see your wearing a kilt?"
    Me:"I am yes"
Grooms Mother:"And are you wearing it in the traditional manner?"
    Me:"I am yes"
    Grooms Mother:"I dont believe you".

At which point she puts her hand up my kilt and grabs my bum.

    She then says:
"Very good" and off she totters.

My girlfriend thought it was hilarious. I didnt know what to say.

I like the lack of physical restriction associated with a kilt vs trousers but it's a bit of a pain having to maintain the twin tree trunks stance all the time...

Agree... Had you done the same to the grooms mother it would have been an entirely different story. Not cool.

Some do, 2 of my friends wear them when not in work and when going to metal gigs.

Brother in law is Scottish and wore one at his wedding. I thought they looked fab. But only on Scottish men.

I love em! My dad is a piper so I'm very used to seeing them worn. With the right outfit I think they look great!

Feileadh Mòr The great kilt, has gaelic origins so it's not just the scots who can wear them. It's said that the gaels who left here and settled in scotland brougth it with them and they clung to culture in a strange land more then those who stayed behind. So there are Irish Clans who have a tartan.

^Yeah but most Irish lads who wear a kilt don't know that. I just don't like the type that do it for attention seeking alone.

The army pipe band has always worn kilts. (cant remember name of it)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,981 ✭✭✭ElleEm

I would find it strange if my boyfriend, dad or brothers just started wearing kilts, but if someone was mad into the Irish/ Scottish history and stuff, I would understand it.

As a fashion thing, I don't get it, but that is just me. Although saying that, I don't know anyone personally who wears kilts. The only time I have seen them is being worn by a wedding party, stags, etc.

Each of the battalions of the defence forces has a pipe band, the air corps has one too.

I like them on Scottish men regardless of the Kilt's roots. As Fit said, Irish men (and the rest) don't know the origins. Some lads wear them to get attention, which I don't like (not into attention seekers full stop). I don't find them as rugged and sexy as they're made out unless the genuine article and worn accordingly.

While kilts and kilt like wear for men goes back many thousands of years in many different cultures, most of the so called "traditions" of the Scottish kilt(and tartans BTW) we see today are almost entirely of late 19th century "Celtic" revival origin and invented at that time. Denim Jeans were mentioned earlier, well kilts in the modern idiom are about as old, so are well open to interpretation. One could argue that if you're of western Chinese origin you could wear one. If you wanna wear one go crazy. I'd not as you've seen better legs on an oil rig...

My husband is Scottish and a very proud scots man he is. He wears his kilt to any wedding we go to and I love it, it looks so elegant and formal. They are quite expensive, his one cost over £1,300 stg.
He usually wears it into work on the Friday before Ireland play Scotland in the six nations for a laugh, wearing the Scottish jersey with it.
We have a family wedding on sat and all the to be in-laws are loving the thoughts of a man in a kilt there. :)

Sure wasn't all the Celtic culture we associate with Scotland and Ireland a recent enough invention? And I read recently that the Celts might never have settled in Ireland at all! Doesn't matter to me though; The Scots have made it their own, even if it's only a recent thing and it's only appealing to me if they wear it. As boring and conservative as that sounds, anyone else wearing one just comes across a bit too try hard.

Just remembered a guy in my class wore one to our ball. He looked much better the previous year in a proper tux. Didnt have the legs for it

Quite a bit of the celtic stuff does come from some fanciful notions that came with the celtic revival of the late 19th century alright. And yep it seems the celtic influence here was cultural not genetic. Even tartan that most "Scottish" of things showed up there quite late in the day. Like 1700's.

I'm surprised kilts/skirts for men haven't made more of a comeback over the years in the west. the Punks used to wear kilts(IMH they got away with it too) and a few new romantics tried it, but the mainstream avoided them, except in the case of Scots blokes. Odd, given they're hardly "effeminate" historically. Some of the hardest nutjobs in history and in cultures all over the world wore them. The kind of men who washed with rocks and set fire to their faces to shave, if they even shaved. Odd how the skirt became almost exclusively feminine.

Bar pipe bands and Scottish weddings the only time I've ever seen a man wear one was about two weeks ago on a night out- I dunno has he Scottish roots but he had an Irish accent (although as pointed out, some Irish clans have a tartan) so I think it was just for fun. He had the whole garb, it looked kinda cool I suppose but mostly just confusing! He was really flamboyant too so made it seem more that it was just for show too.

Couldn't care less what someone wears in general though! Kilts, punk, goth, folksy type wear, whatever- it's all about whether you can carry it off.

    Swoon.....

Kilts, yes, I love them. Generally speaking Im in favour of any garb that shows off more of a mans body, especially if he has a good body to look at. I also like that some men keep sneaky hip flasks of whiskey in their sporrans.

I just realised that thats Gerard Butler rocking a pink jumper with his kilt and still looking manly - oh yes, I like kilts even more.

    My 2 obligatory kilt jokes:

Is there anything worn under the kilt?
Nope, it's all in perfect working order.

Little old lady tourist: What's under the kilt?
    Scotsman: Feel for yourself lass.
Little old lady, feels under the kilt then yanks her hand away: Oh my God, it's gruesome!!
Scotsman: Feel again dearie, it grew some more.

Love them! There's a real sense of style to a kilt and if a guy is confident to wear one and is proud of it then it shows.

Would love to see them worn more by men, they're always a head turner. (At least for me!) :P

My fiance is planning on wearing one for our wedding this year. He's tried a few on and they really suit him. He's spoken about buying one for himself after the wedding and I'm totally behind him on it.

My ex was Scottish and had moved over here with his family when he was a teenager. He was fiercely into his Scottish roots, and used to threaten to wear a kilt to our college balls and things like that. At the time as a silly teenager who didn't want to stand out, I was mortified at the thought and used to beg him not to. If it were now and he wanted to, I wouldn't have a care in the world.

His Dad used to wear them to all formal occasions here at the start, until he'd finally had enough of being felt up or exposed by drunken Irish people. He retired his kilt then unless he was going to special occasions in the UK. It's a bit sad really.

I would love to wear one if I was Scottish and had a kilt with the proper clan colours. Failing that I'd just look like an attention-seeking twat in a cheap costume. I'm not saying I'll never do it though :).

Having said that I don't mind other people wearing it. It's a free country.

They are though. A kilt is just a type of skirt, one that men are actually allowed to wear.

My sister married a Scotsman and had the wedding in Scotland.
Obviously the groom and his family and friends all wore kilts. But my sister asked my brothers and Dad to wear them and they all did.
Even my boyfriend wore one. It looked so good on everyone.
I couldn't believe how well all the guys looked.

I definitely think it looks much smarter than any suit/tux I've seen.
That being said, I'm not a fan of a kilt worn with a t-shirt. I don't think it suits the casual look.

Oh no. I think they're awful looking things. The pic in the op - I don't think it does anything for any of those guys.
I'd say some of it probably is down to cultural gender issues ingrained in me - as in skirts are for women - Like I know cognitively that this is silly, but these norms do embed themselves nonetheless, even if you challenge them.
Mainly though, I just do not like how they look.
