Is there specific external hard drives you buy for Macs or can you just buy any ol' one!? Been meaning to get one for my pro

Any ol' one will do, they normally come formatted as NTFS or FAT32 formatted I would open disk utility and reformat as MAC OS extended with a guid partition for intel macs.

Ava I've had awful problems with Iomega drives, the drive itself wasn't the issue but the power supply, plug it in and it powers on but not supplying enough power to spin up the drives, I've replaced five supplies for the one drive which I use as an archive. Again I'll reiterate if it's a single drive/disk then an enclosure is your best bet and quickest method.

ok kool so do i just conect my hard drive to the enclosure and then to my computer and that makes power supply stronger ??is that how it works?

You either buy a new supply from Iomega themselves through the Support portal on their website or you buy a 3.5" USB enclosure (go to right-click on camden street or dawson street), remove the disk from the iomega and place it in the enclosure.

what do you mean by remove the disc from the iomega and place it in the enclosure how would you do that ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 896 ✭✭✭nialler

You take a screwdriver to the Iomega remove the large silver thing (disk) and then put it in the enclosure, if there's two disks in the drive, leave it alone and buy a new power supply

    Is your external like this?

    hpic_hdd_port_usb.gif

If so it's more than likely a 2.5" drive.

Does it look like this also
    HDD.500.LAP.WD.jpg

If so then it's deffo a 2.5" caddy you need, make sure it's SATA as I doubt you'd get and IDE now days.

If you're not confident about doing the transfer to the new enclosure yourself I can help you out if you like ? I live in Donabate but could meet you in the Blanchardstown Center and try to help. Let me know if that's any use to you ?

    i really appreciate that :)

would it be as straight forward as this? http://www.instructables.com/id/Install-a-Hard-Drive-in-an-External-Enclosure/

Yeah pretty much ! The only thing is you don't know if the drive is actually any good.

If it turns out it is faulty you will have wasted money on the enclosure. That said there's nothing stopping you buying a new drive and putting it into the new enclosure if that turns out to be the case.

My plan was to connect it to a USB to SATA/IDE adaptor to check it's actually readable and then take it from there.

IF that guide doesn't work out for you the offer is still there.

    cheers man

:) so if i get the enclosure is should be right? its just iv important music samples on the hard drive

If the actual hard drive is good then putting it into the new enclosure should work just fine. You won't know until you try it but I have my suspicions the drive may be dead. Most 2.5" enclosures don't require an external PSU and work just fine from a USB port. If you're isn't spinning up from either Firewire OR USB then it doesn't sound good. Hopefully I'm wrong !

By the way, the guide you linked to is for an IDE 3.5" drive. Yours is most likely a 2.5" SATA drive but still pretty straight forward.
