Putting effects on instruments with cubase in real time?

Im after moving up in the world from Audacity to Cubase ai6 and Im trying to get used to its more compex interface . Im wondering if it is possible for me to put an effect on an instrument and hear it as I play as opposed to recording without an effect and then applying one later ?How do you do this ?I can only see how to…

Th instrument is an electric bass played through a usb interface .
