Weights & Cardio, little weight loss?

    Hi quick question

My GF is currently doing a weights and cardio programme (TRX, weights/cardio in the Gym, she works out about 5 times per week) Shes about 6 or 7 weeks into it and has noticed little or no change to her weight. She is eating extremely healthy and definitely at a deficit.

Is the reason for little weight loss due to the fact she is doing resistance training too and the muscle may cancel this weight loss out?? She has noticed a few differences herself but wants numbers, ie he weight to start dropping.

She used the bodyfat hand held monitor last week and it is basically showing the same reading she got about 5 weeks ago! I have heard that hand held device is very inaccurate also. I know for a fact she has lost body fat just by looking at her.

Any ideas on why this may be and if she will start losing weight? I know the most accurate way to calculate bodyfat is the under water technique but it's pricey.

Thanks in advance for your advices/opinions.

6/7 weeks is very little. A friend of mine started doing similar stuff last year and it wasn't until after a few months that the big differences were noticable.

One thing you'd need to consider though, not saying it's incorrect, but are you sure she's eating healthy? A lot of people come here under the impression their diet is healthy, only to find it isn't.

Thanks for your reply, I was thinking it was only a short time myself, yes she is eating very healthy we've researched all the foods and have spoken with a personal trainer in the gym we're in, Brown rice/cottage cheese/alot of vegetables/fruit/yoghurt etc

What do you think of the bodyfat hand held device or have you had any experience/known anyone to have used it?

take pictures. your body shape may change for the better but it might still weigh the same. take pictures at regular intervals to notice the changes.

If your noticing no difference in weight, or the way your pictures looks then you are missing something. most likely to be your diet. have that looked at.

most likely too much sugar, not enough protein. and not at a defecit. Start weighing your food and measuring exactly what you eat. put it into an app each day.

probably not necessary, you dont need to focus on unnecessary numbers, just worry about the calories in vs calories out, everything else will take care of itself.

And you dont need exact measurements of body fat, if you are 20%+ you can tell by looking, knowing that it is 25% or 28% wont really matter.
and when you drop to a lower percentage you will notice. the exact number is irrelevant for casual weight loss.

There is your answer, if she has noticed the differences and you have notice by looking at her why does numbers and percentage matter?

7 weeks isn't really that long, give it time. If she is doing it right it takes time.

If she is in a gym and on a program did her trainer not take measurements/fat % at the start?
If she is really concerned about measurements and percentages
It would be no harm asking an instructor to do measurements. Chances are their equipment is more advanced and they will give a more accurate measurements/fat%.

To be honest all the trainer did at the start was weight in KG's, height and Bodyfat from the hand held machine. No use of tape etc even though this is available, but no calipers.

Ah she just wants actual numbers just to be able to tell people how much BF/weight she has lost, it keeps her motivated which is totally understandable.

She has recently taken her own measurements anyway and taken photos so that's a good start.

Yeah I'm positive it will show in the next couple of months.

My main question is I suppose, have other people had a similar experience? Resistance training included with a cardio programme slowing down the weight loss but then eventually losing weight further down the line?

Never does well to be fixated on numbers. Scales are not reliable indicators of progress.

    Great article on same here

It is a hard habit to break but a good one.

I did Chalene Extreme dvd programme over the Summer holidays last year and "only" lost 3lbs but the difference in my before & after photos showed a significant change in body shape.

    use a measuring tape

neck, upper arms, chest, waist, upper legs

take measurements once a fortnight. you will see the change in numbers there
