Diet coke and chocolate vs lucozade

    Hi all,

Hoping to get some advice, for my afternoon break I would normally get a chocolate bar and can of diet coke. its a treat and also find it gets me through the afternoon slump.

however I am concerned with the amount of diet coke I am taking in and would like to cut it down. I was thinking/have tried switching to a bottle of Lucozade (the 338ml or whatever it is bottle) instead of the diet coke and chocolate as it would be the same amount of calories.

I know some people will say its better not to have either but its something I like and perhaps after a while I can stop with the Lucozade but for the moment my question is, which would be better? a can of diet coke and a chocolate bar or a bottle of lucozade

    Thanks

The answer is they're both equally sh*te.

Why are you concerned about the can of diet coke?

Are you not concerned about sugar content?

I've just been hearing a lot about aspartame and stuff they put into diet drinks to make them low calorie which can be bad for you long term so wanted to cut down and was looking for alternatives

I've switched to having coke zero and if it's cold enough it's tastes almost like regular coke. I'm not sure if you're drinking diet coke for the taste or reduced sugar.

A bottle of lucozade contains 40% of your RDA of sugar which is a lot...

I originally switched to diet coke for the calories, although that was like 15 years ago, I now find regular coke way to sweet!

40% is a lot alright! 64 Grams of sugar in lucozade vs 20 grams for my usual kitkat!

and from a quick google apparently the recommended amount of sugar is 40 grams

Try not to rely on sugar for energy boosts. If you're feeling the slump have some green tea and some seeds/nuts?

    Is green tea that good?

I don't drink any hot drinks so no tea and coffee, hence the addiction to diet coke

Well If you're worried about aspartame there are tons of studies on aspartame.

Drink four cans of red bull with a shot of tequilla thrown in. Great for energy slump.
Ask a ridiculous question, get a ridiculous answer.

    You don't drink hot drinks?
Make a strong coffee and trow some ice in with it. That will get you threw the "afternoon slump" ;)

Not been smart but if you cut the sugar out of your diet you wouldn't have any such thing as an "afternoon slump"

I suppose what he is trying to point out is this.
The question you have asked is akin to asking:
What is worse for you, A bullet in the head or a Knife to the heart?

In that the "best" one for you isn't really good at all.

It is 100% constructive. Constructive means to serve a useful purpose. If by reading the post you realise how ridiculous the post/question is it will have served a useful purpose.

Do not expect anyone with a genuine interest in health and nutrition give you any answer apart from- both options are ****e..get rid of both.

FFS this is absolute horsesh!t. A poster has a genuine question on nutrition and he is savaged because it is beneath the "regulars".

Not everyone knows alot about nutrition. Look at the way Lucozade is branded in the media. Not surprised that many people don't know what's in it.

A treat is once a week not once a day. Soft drinks are complete poison!

You're clearly not willing to drop the soft drink and merely want to replace it. Lucozade is a step in the wrong direction imho.

I've read plenty on Aspartame and there have been no conclusive studies to prove its dangerous.

If you're genuinely worried about your health you wouldn't be eating/drinking that garbage at all.

Does the drink need to be fizzy?

Nobody savaged anyone. The OP needed to be told straight up that both are ****e choices. I dont believe the question warranted a debate apart from..both are crap...research better options.

BlueIsland posted a smartarsed answer to a genuine question. That is neither constructive nor useful.

OP, I found sparkling water to be a great subsititute or some no added sugar concentrate now and again.

OP, could you try still/sparkling water with a drop of miwadi in it? I'd skip the chocolate bar and have something more filling, maybe some nuts?

Why is it stupid? Because you knew the answer? He was asking because he didn't know.

Ask a hundred people on the street what they think of Lucozade. Many will say it "helps you go longer" and "It's great for energy". Few will say it's sh!te for you.

I hope alot of lurkers don't see this and decide not to post their genuine questions in case they get answers similar to yours.

Op sugary drinks really are the devil. I stopped drinking them under strict orders from my dentist and I was amazed at the turnaround in my complexion. I echo what the other poster said about sparkling water, keep it really cold, it's lovely. After a couple weeks you won't miss the sugary drinks at all!

With the saved calorie spend you could afford some nice snacks like; yogurt, nuts, crackers, fruit, cheese.

or they reassess their thoughts/ beliefs about certain foods/drinks and possibly change their habits?????

OP you should try something like surf seeds. There mostly seeds but the odd seed has a light chocolate cover on it

In my experience, if you're getting an "afternoon slump", it's usually because you've eaten a crap breakfast and/or lunch (i.e. lots of simple carbs), or you've been otherwise snacking on sweet things in the morning and your blood sugar has taken a dip. Low-GI foods in the morning and at lunch - porridge, wholemeal bread, etc - will stop you from dipping in the afternoon and craving a sugary snack.

All the chocolate does (and the lucozade will do) is give you a quick spike for the afternoon and you'll be starving and grumpy by dinner, leading to you overeating at dinner or snacking before it.

As well as that, if this is something you do every afternoon, then it's likely a habit too. You should be able to get away with just the diet coke and a bit of willpower for two weeks, after which you'll begin to stop craving the chocolate. Caffeine is a diet suppressant and diet coke has effectively no calories, so it's not inherently a bad snack in the afternoon, especially since the caffeine alone will give you the kick you're craving.

However a bottle of water at your desk in the afternoon will equally suppress your appetite, satisfy the craving to put stuff in your mouth, and save you money.

The OP has no interest in giving up eating shi.te. He just wants to know what's less unhealthy.

The forum is "Nutrition & Diet" in "Health & Fitness", stupid questions get stupid answers.

If he came on and said he was addicted to eating shi.te and was looking for a healthy alternative he might get more positive replies.

infairness it is a bit of stupid question..

OP ditch the soft drinks. I did since new years and have felt much better. i was a bit addicted to diet coke, and now just up the water intake and have the odd coffee/tea. i wish i gave them up before lucozade etc aswel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,800 ✭✭✭Lingua Franca

I swapped Lucozade for sparkling water years ago. I dropped a stone in just a few months. You might not like it OP, but it's well worth developing a taste for. The water helps with more than nutrition. Your skin becomes clearer, you won't bloat as much, digestion is easier, it's filling so you won't eat as much at dinner.

You'd be better off asking for a better replacement for that snack.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 777 ✭✭✭boogle

Definitely swap for sparkling water is a good idea. If you find sparkling water too bland, try throwing/squeezing a wedge of lemon and lime into it. Tasty!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,722 ✭✭✭nice_guy80

stop putting that crap into your body and switch to water

then eat some fruit along with nuts/seeds for your snack.
your body will thank you for it.

Sparkling/Soda water + cranberry juice = WAY tastier than Diet Coke or Lucozade

OP, straight up answer to your question - choc and diet coke is probably better for you than Lucozade, for the sheer reason that Lucozade is just liquid calories (about 300 or so?) that will put you on a high for half an hour and then make you feel less energetic than you did before hand, where as the choc and diet coke is actually some food that will go through your tum making you at least feel full for a little while - although i do think the sugar substitutes or whatever in diet coke could be more harmful than the sugar in full fat coke, but lesser devil I suppose.

BUT, do you really need these? Are you really having an afternoon slump or are you just thinking, some junk would be nice now? If it's really a case of an afternoon slump in energy you should look at your lunch etc - something as simple as a chicken sandwich on wholegrain bread will give you protein and carbs to keep you going for a few hours. If you really just want the treat, try and change your way of thinking so that your treat is ONE item - particularly if your treat is daily. Think, I'll have the choc OR the coke. You really don't need to have both.

Also as someone else said about the water - have a pint glass of water, standard tap or bottled or with some miwadi, however it's easiest for you - and sip away at it while you work. Because you're constantly putting something into your mouth your body will go longer without telling you that it's hungry, and the water will help you concentrate better, and just feel better inside and out.
