    anyone shake any urea yet.

Temp a bit cool yet with no sign of a rise worth talking about.

Or do you gamble and have it on allowing that it will take a couple of weeks to kick in and the temp might rise a bit by then............

Temperatures are set to rise by next mid week. Could grease the driveshaft on the spreader till then :P

FURTHER OUTLOOK ... Eventually the Atlantic circulation will return and it may not be very mild at that point either, so a sleety or even wintry mix is possible although it seems more likely to be mostly rain in the south and west (by the end of next week), as southeast to east winds become stronger, reaching perhaps 50-70 km/hr with temperatures in the 5-8 C range -- raw but not that unusual. There are signs of another cold spell beyond the weekend of 9-10 March, but it's too far off to have much confidence about it yet.

not according to Boards MT Cran - don't put too much grease on it yet!!...... I guess anything is better than the rain:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Dont spread urea on bare pastures, only on fields where there is a bit of cover otherwise it will do no good

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 360 ✭✭Bactidiaryl

Urea needs moisture. If it dosent get it it will go to the sky.

there is more than enough moisture in/on the ground at hte moment. its a combination of temperature and dryness that affects urea. i spread fert 2 weeks ago and considered it late. 3 dry dats and the fert is taken up by the grass roots and will sit in the plant ready for use when growth arrives. fert take approx 3 weeks after application to really get growth going.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 360 ✭✭Bactidiaryl

Checked the soil temp and it read 6.5 deg C so ok to go with a little bag fert.

Teagasce advisor was out and advised against Urea so got a few bags of Pasture Sward to spread tomorrow on a bit of very hungry looking ground that was reseeded last spring and got about 3 days grazing last year.

went with3/4 a bag to the acre across a few fields this evening. first time using it so fingers crossed.

All of the grazed ground here is after getting 2k gallons of pig slurry/acre will continue with this for the first rotation. Around 20 acres got 2k of cattle slurry before grazing rest had covers that were too strong for slurry. We might put 50kg of urea on the ground destined for grazing at the end of the month.

    I'd say no waiting needed.

Is it still €15 a ton cheaper, havnt used it in a good few years due to spread pattern issues. Last time I used it I swore never again. Think my spreader only spreads prilled to 12m where as can go 18m with gran

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,949 ✭✭✭delaval

Yea Bob between 10-15 cheaper. We spread gran at 22m and prill at 20 getting on fine

We use an Amazone trailed spreader, well it's a mounted spreader on a bogey not sure of model but holds 3 tonne of fert 2.25 urea.

This being my first year spreading urea. It may sound stupid but will it be wasted with the amount of rain. I know it needs moisture and all but is it a bit rough on it?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,949 ✭✭✭delaval

    Chippy, when did you spread?

I that half a bag per acre or 25kgs N/acre

25kg of product so 46% of that comes to 11.5 units

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,326 ✭✭✭Farmer Pudsey

It is often expressed in units so you spread half of 46 so 23 units/acre.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,844 ✭✭✭49801

    Sure about that?
    Urea is 46%

    So 100kg is 46units
    50kg is 23units
    25kg is 11.5units

But maybe I've made a balls of that calc.

Yup because 100kgs of urea contains 46kgs of N and 92 units of urea.
To get from units/acre to kgs/ha you multiply units/acre by 1.25.
So 1 bag urea (46unitsN)/acre is equal to 57.5 kgsN/ha

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,049 ✭✭✭Injuryprone

The whole 'units' measure comes from the use of the cwt bag.

A 1 cwt bag of urea contains 46 units of N, a 1 cwt bag of CAN contains 27 units of N.

Everything is worked off this base.
    100kg is 2cwt bags, 25kg is 1/2 a bag etc.

still have urea sitting on a trailer, and with the weather thats in it i'm guessing it will be a complete waste of time spreading it, or am i wrong, seems to cold and with that harsh wind not much growth either
has anyone ditched there plans to put out urea and gone back to can other compounds
