How often do you service your car?

Just wondering how often people get their cars serviced? Be it garage or by themselves

I service my TDi golf every 5,000 miles, and will change fuel, oil and air filter and obviously the oil. (I service it myself)

Am I mad?? Just think a regular service is so important to keeping the car in good shape.

5000 miles seems a tad excessive to be changing the filters. I get mine done every 12-15k km or so (would probably change the oil more regularly).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,865 ✭✭✭✭MuppetCheck

Every 15k km, intervals are 20k km but that's a bit much to me. That equates to 3-4 months between services.

    Toyota Surf
oil and oil filter at 5,000km, air filter at 10,000km and fuel filter at 30,000km. I service it myself

I change oil + oil filter on my cars every 15k kilometres or 1 year - whichever comes first.

Air filter - I used to change it everytime with oil change when I lived in the city in Poland as it was properly dirty by that distance. Since I live and drive in Mayo, my air filters last for 40 - 50k kilometres and are still quite clean.

I change spark plugs as advised by manufacturer.
I change brake pads or linings (for drum brakes) when needed.

In general I rather don't have a schedule to do everything at once f.e. once a year and call it a service, but just do everything when it's needed.

I personally wouldn't say you're mad OP, thats because I'd be like you! Fresh oil is the lifeblood of an engine.

1997 Laguna 1.8 - serviced every 4-5k miles (oil - 10w 40 semi synt, oil filter, airfilter, sparkplugs) then coolant and brake fluid every 2 years, gearbox oil approx every 40/50k miles. Fuel filter every 30k miles or so.

1998 Micra 1.0 - serviced every 5k kms (oil - 5w 30 fully synt, oilfilter, airfilter, sparkplugs) then as above coolant and brake fluid every two years, gear oil every three years as it doesn't do the mileage the other cars do and fuel filter every two years.

2005 Focus 1.4 - serviced every 10k kms (oil - 5w 30 fully synt, oil filter, airfilter and sparkplugs), fresh coolant was put in when timing belt and water pump were replaced, no fuel filter to change and brake fluid is done every two years. Have not replaced gerabox oil on it yet but have fresh oil to put in it, just haven't got round to doing it yet.

Some people say I'm mad but I don't care!

Oil + oil filter every 15k km. fuel and air filter ever 30k km. I'd put up nearly 30k km a year so basically 2 services a year. And I do it myself or with my dad.

For most service items your not:p but the plugs should do considerably more than 5-10k kms

Every 10k miles. Have used longlife oil nearly always but (which theoretically) can do 20k miles) would never let it go that long to service it thou.

The other service items as per manufacturers requirements. Service it myself. Used have the luxury of a pit in the garage to get under it in Ireland since living in the UK even changing a light bulb in the private car park gets looks and curious looks from my neighbours :P.

I sold a very nice 2004 Forrester to a respectable couple in their 40's, it had a FSH and I had just serviced it before putting it up for sale. After we exchanged money etc, we just started chatting and I told them that if they keep up with the scheduled service the Forrester wont give them any trouble, they just kind of laughed, they never serviced any of their cars!!!
They would put them in for the NCT, give it to the garage to fix any problems and continue driving. I had to nearly beg them to keep servicing it. Only that they paid the full asking price, one day after advertising it, I felt like telling them they didn't deserve it. Felt sorry for the Forrester:(

id say more than 50% of the general public dont do any servicing at all, granted im not basing this on any actual stats but when lot wont even tax/insure their car ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,280 ✭✭✭✭Autosport

Between 10,000 and 15,000kms which is around every 6 months, always check the oil every week though :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,062 ✭✭✭cjt156

As per schedule. Oil & filter 12k miles or once a year. Air filter every second service, belts every third. Plugs every 60k. Gear box oil similar. 172k miles and engine sweet.

5k oil? 10k plugs? Sorry lads, that's just silly.

Gearbox? I've yet to do gearbox oil and there is over 130K miles......manual say's nothing about it. Should it be looked at?

I've smelled gearbox oil before, that's enough to turn me off doing it!!

Personally I would change the gear oil as as with any oil it'll go off over time and especially at that mileage it would help. Most cars never have their gear oil changed though.

Every year approaching the winter months. I do around 10,000 km a year.

I'd check tyres, water, oil - the usual stuff - every week or other week, too.

    BMW 535d:

Oil/Filter every 8-10k kms or so which works out about 3 times per year.
Air/Fuel filter once a year which is about every 25k kms.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,661 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

    Once a year/every 5-7k miles.

1.8 TDCI Cmax, schedule is 25k km, I change the oil every 20k km.
Since I'll soon be doing 1000km a week, I'd be changing the oil every other week if my intervals where any shorter.
Did someone say oil change 5k km?
Maybe in the 70's with a Morris Minor with the 15w40 oil of the time if covering feck all miles.
Otherwise just a total waste of money.

E36 323i. Oil / oil filter every 9k miles, air filter every 18k miles. 194,000miles and still running well.

It good to see people on here servicing their cars regularly and that i'm not too excessive with my service intervals:D. T/B next to be done to my car, but I'll let the main dealer look after that.

My reason for starting this tread was from an article on Car Mechanics where the author was describing his experiences of the Terra clean system, he also mentioned that he serviced his X5 every 4,000 miles:eek:. Now that is probably excessive.

My car has been main dealer serviced in the UK for the most of its life and has been looked after by the vw main dealer in Cork for the past few years before I got hold of it. Only major item replaced was the dmf and clutch main dealer did that two years ago.

Just out of curiousity; what do you guys put into your service logs? do you write down what you did and just staple the receipts to the page?

You reckon this is sufficient to maintain a full service history on the car if you look to sell it down the line?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

05 Legacy 2.0 petrol. I do it myself every 10k Kms. I changed the plugs to ultra long life platinum a when I got it as they're a pig to get at in the boxer engine so I only have to change oil and filter and then the air filter every other service.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 920 ✭✭✭Ron Burgundy II

I just keep my receipts in a file and write the mileage on the top of the receipt.

So why put clean oil through a dirty filter?

Me, manufactures guidelines at every 7,000 miles on my Clio.

Our local recycling centre takes the oil. We normally gather up a drum and bring it there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,313 ✭✭✭Mycroft H

Or you could get a waste oil burner. But I've about a years worth in old paint buckets that I keep meaning to bring to the recycling center
