If you were in control, what would you change?

Pick one thing which you feel should have higher points, one thing which should have lower points, one thing which you feel should have no points (but already does) and one thing which should have points but doesn't.

    I'll go first:
    • Speeding has 2 points but should have only 1
    • Not indicating carries no points but should carry 5
    • Driving without insurance should be 11 points, ie, one more slip up and you're fucked
    • Crossing a continuous white line carries 2 but should carry none, provided there are no cars coming on the other side and you are overtaking a tractor, bike, granny driver etc

    I'll go second:

    10 points for thread starting
15 points and a ban for starting 20 threads in 24 hours

Hitting a cyclist should be 500 points, the structure at present makes it ridiculously hard to win.

[*]Speeding has 2 points but should have only 1
[*]Not indicating carries no points but should carry 5
Explain your logic for this please.

Driving without insurance gets you banned off the road anyway unless you're very lucky with the judge so that's a bit pointless.
Not indicating to carry 5? Ah stop now would ya, I always indicate and it's annoying when people don't on roundabouts and the likes but 5 points? You're having a laugh. Maybe an automatic €20 fine would urge people in the right direction.

5 points for no NCT is something that should be abolished.

You really think the rules of the road don't apply to you don't you ?

I live in an estate where there's a continuous white line AND a number of bus stops along it's route.
That sort of idiotic planning approval is wrong.

There have been a couple of times were I was driving along my own lane, completely legally, and someone tried overtaking a stopped bus on a solid white line, forcing me to a complete stop, nose to nose with them.

If I were in charge, I'd set up a completely new arm of the traffic corp to process dashboard camera footage sent in.
Can you imagine the change in driver behaviour if every car was a potential recording witness ?

Points for speeding should depend on the severity of the offence...

No points at all if you're less than 10km/h over the limit. Just a fine.

2 points if you're caught between 10 and 20km/h over the limit.

4 points if you're caught between 20 and 30km/h over the limit.

6 points if you're caught between 30 and 40km/h over the limit.

10 points for anybody caught exceeding the limit by more than 40km/h.

It is negligence on the driver.

If two drivers are driving 120kph on a motorway, and the one behind has defective brakes.... then if the one in front has to stop suddenly then the driver behind is likely to crash into them.

If you don't have a good feel for a car, and don't know when it's driving right or not, I don't believe you should be driving at all.

I think there should be penalty points in life.

2 points for crossing the road at a slow angle in front of oncoming cars.
4 points for stopping and having a conversation at the end of an escalator.
4 points for stopping dead in front of you on the path.
8 points for wearing a Bluetooth headset whilst shopping.
10 points for not holding doors open.
12 points and a life ban for walking 3 a breast on a path when someone else is trying to pass.

    1 point for whistling a made-up tune.
2 points for referring to the "grand stretch in the evenings".
4 points for bringing a trolley to the self service checkout.
6 points for saying "happy days!" when something vaguely good happens.
8 points for trying to force somebody to dance at a wedding when they clearly don't want to.
10 points for saying "cheers" instead of "thanks".
12 points for any adult referring to their friends as "the lads" or "my girlies".

Seriously? You see no reason to punish a driver for driving a car that poses a potential danger to other road users?

A car could pose a potential danger to other road users the second it leaves the NCT center. It proves the car is roadworthy when it's tested and that's all.

To have a 5 point punishment just because it doesn't have a little cert is ridiculous.

    See above.

As for your last sentence, I'd agree. If only there was a way to test for that then the NCT system could be abolished ;)

    1. 5 points for slow walkers
    2. ban on walking for people who stand on escalators
    3. ban on walking and prison term for people who stand abreast on escalator and don't move out of the fucking way despite the oafish neanderthal clearly seeing / noticing someone looming behind them.

ADD: People who don't use apostrophes properly and mix up their / they're / there and it's / its and pore / pour etc.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,267 ✭✭✭visual

5 points for not having a current nct disc is excessive, While its the only test we have it isn't a proper road worthy test.

Even cars with failed nct its predominantly mirior issues bushings light alignment etc.

Very few fail because of dangerous defect that you can't legally drive away from NCT centre.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,373 ✭✭✭✭foggy_lad

Speeding should be 4 points and automatic mandatory three month ban on court conviction, mobile phone use while driving should be 5 points and a week in prison for second and subsequent instances. No insurance or tax or nct and your vehicle should be seized and crushed with no possibility of reprieve plus you get 4 points for each offence plus a month in prison if you are missing all three. not displaying proper number plates and vehicle should be impounded until you show all documentation and arrive at the impound yard with replacement legal plates and pay the towing fee plus storage and a €200 fee for fitting the new plates.

add 5000 points for people who stop in the middle of the supermarket for a chat blocking the beans or some other popular food item.(down at the milk fridge is a favourite for these numptys)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,800 ✭✭✭Senna

Points for sitting in the overtaking lane oblivious to the queue behind and the empty left lane. The number of cars behind dictates the number of points, 2 cars behind = 2 points, 12 cars or more and you are banned.

4 points for those who can't use a roundabout properly.

    6 points for tailgating.

Automatic ban when you buy a Nissan Micra/Honda Jazz.

Driver school and 6 month ban for being a twat and thinking people are psychic cos you refuse to use indicators on a roundabout.

Flogging for when you pull out of a side road in a hurry even though I'm the only car on the road and then proceed to drive at 20 kph in your Micra in front of me for miles with nowhere for me to overtake on a windy road where even the tractors are looking to overtake you.

Public flogging for the twat who has been driving 50kph on the 100kph road then proceed to drive 50kph in a 30kph zone like it all balances out!

And last but by no means least those mother****ers who drive with princess on board signs. I have yet to come up with a suitable torture for them!! Feel free to help a sista out!

4 points if you're caught between 20 and 30km/h over the limit.

6 points if you're caught between 30 and 40km/h over the limit.

10 points for anybody caught exceeding the limit by more than 40km/h.

I'd be in favour of a percentage based system.

    For example:

90km/h in a 50km/h (with a few exceptions where I think different speed limits should be imposed at night time) is generally madness and should warrant 10 points.
160km/h in a 120km/h is not on the same level and should really only warrant maybe 4 points.

If you made it so that 150% of the limit was ten points, then the driver doing 75km/h in a 50 would get the ten, but the motorway driver would need to drive at 180km/h to get ten.

The way I'd do it myself is this:

    Under 100km/h
    ===========

    100-120% - 2 points
    120-140% - 4 points
    140-160% - 8 points
160% + INSTANT license suspension for 3 months

    Over 100km/h
    ==========

    100-115% - 1 point
    115-130% - 3 points
    130-150% - 6 points
150%+ INSTANT license suspension for 3 months

Can't believe no one has mentioned this.

5 points for idiots driving around with their fog lights on.

1 point for anyone driving around with only 1 light working.

12 points for undertaking or trying to go up the inside lane and then trying to cut back into the right lane at traffic lights.

People who drive the wrong way down a motorway should be dragged out of their cars, shot unceremoniously and buried at the the side of the road. The same should happen to those who drive without lights on at night or in poor visibility

+1 On the roadworthy front cars often fail for emissions which have a zero effect on potential accidents. On the brake effectiveness front different models of cars can vary massively on this even in tip top condition. EG a BMW M3 has got significantly better anchors than a Toyota Corolla.

Enforcing the current measures would be a good start. The police don't appear to give a ratsarse about something as straight forward as pulling people over breaking the lights.
Hire out cameras to long term unemployed let them loose to take photos on the streets. Give them a percentage of every fine collected for breaking the lights, speeding, parking offences, no tax/insurance/NCT.
EDIT: Oh and give the right to issue parking tickets to anyone who has a disability parking permit.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

But the rules of the road. They said x speed means y stopping distance. There are no other variables. Except they got that wrong too.
