Buying a GTI Golf

    Hey All,

You may have read my thread. And after this thread you may be wondering will I ever make my mind up? :pac:

Well to cut a long story short. After many people advising against the Peugeot and not being able to find a suitable one with a non questionable history, i've decided to go back to the GTI Golf, this time for real.

My main query here is about the current market value. I've seen a few decent ones that seem highly priced, only reason I can see is the low mileage, which is difficult to verify.

Ideally, I would like a leather, DSG version. I'd like 2008 but would settle for lower.

I've seen a few decent ones but seem priced a little high.

    Examples here, here and here.

In my opinion these are priced just too high. Over the past few months i've seen a few gems come and go very quickly for a grand or too less. I remember two specifically, and they were dealers too.

What do you guys think I should be paying?

Also, i'm two mind as to whether I should go for an older 05/06 example, for considerably less. What are the caveats on this approach?

Also, when does the timing belt have to get done on these?

    Cheers

Great car, I would go for the first one, but 3 door will have to suit.

I don't care if it runs on fairydust and kittens come out of the exhaust €14,000 for a 6 year old Hot hatch is lunacy

Buy this and tax and insure it for 4 years with the change

I've owned a mark v with dsg, leather and climate control. Definitely find one with those three things - it's the only 3 options you'll definitely want.

The prices above seem like lunacy. I sold an 06 in march 12 (which was used at VAG shows with a massive spec and finish and low miles) for 10k. 14k the same car is nuts

Leather and DSG is what i wanted too until i bought a different car, im sure it's alot more refined than most but as i said above €14,000 for a 6 year old 2 generations old Hot hatch is madness

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,545 ✭✭✭sk8board

The timing chain is 6 years or 120k miles if memory serves. I had to do it in order to sell mine. the service intervals are all on the Internet.
The MOST IMPORTANT one is to ensure the dsg oil change was done at 40k miles. It shows the car was well looked after too.

Most if not all the ones you're looking at will be 40k+ on the clock - so this should be the first question you ask over the phone. I'd be saying goodbye to anyone who doesn't have it done or fobs you off

That's what I was thinking.. I guess they think they can command those prices for the low mileage, but that only goes so far.

I must say that the ST is an interesting alternative, is the insurance in the same range do you know?

Jeez, that's pretty good. I'd be more comfortable spending that kind of money to be honest.

I'm insisting on leather and climate, but not sure about the DSG. I've always driven manual so not sure i'd miss it. There's not much on Carzone at the moment. I must check out done deal.

    EDIT:

Here's one i've been looking at. I like the colour and it's leather/DSG/climate.

The picture show well out of date tax/nct. Is this worrying or meaningless as they are old photos probably just on the market for a while?

Has that last GTi been on sale for nearly 2 years? It says in the advert that it is taxed until June 2011.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

Insurance quotes i got @ 29 with 5 years no claims were exact same from 123.ie for the ST/GTI

Tbh ST prices have about bottomed out atm where GTI prices are at a premium

The prices seem all over the place with them to be honest - theres 05 ones ranging from 4.5k to close on 10k on donedeal. On the lookout for a 5 door, manual, with climate and leather myself - not too many decent spec ones out there, so might be part of the reason why they're commanding a premium.

Looks well, but that paint is a bit...erm...lairy for everday for me anyhow.

The orange Ford badges are awful too.

    Decent value.

I just called the 3rd ad that appeared to be two years old.

He laughed and said it was sold long ago.

It appears Carzone are auto updating adverts with their new hold till sold policy. :(

Im a geek, but i just loved The dsg. Exhaust makes a lovely pop when change up too

It was difficult to enjoy it on country roads, which was v rare for me. Motorway and street it's brilliant
I changed to a steptronic BMW, but even that setup is no match for the exactness of the dsg.
I haven't heard of any reliability issues with the older mkv's dsg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭techguy

I think i'll take this one for a drive at the weekend.

Perfect, except for the lack of leather

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭robertxxx

Make sure you take somebody who knows about car with you as it's know as cowboy land out in the Wild West.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭techguy

Unfortunately, I don't really know anybody that would know any better than me.

I don't think i'll buy it anyway as I think i'd regret not holding out for the leather later on.

There's also this one, which is closer to home. It's a ridiculous price though. What kind of movement on the price do you think dealers will offer up?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,163 ✭✭✭robertxxx

It's from a more recognised dealer, go in with a dirty low price, tell him its pre 08, so high tax, and 2ltr petrol, which nobody wants these days.

Offer 10k and work from there.

Look at this one. €17k is utter madness.

Mileage is pretty low. I'm not suggesting this is clocked but at what point does mileage become suspect? Also, with multiple owners i'd be suspicious. Just one owner and I wouldn't mind as much.

Personally, i'm holding out for a 5 DR/Leather/DSG/Climate/Multi function steering wheel. I'd probably buy anything up to 75k miles and pay no more than €11,500 (for mileage on the lower end)

Am I hoping for too much here?

Someone bought a demo and does about 6k a year? Nothing beyond the realms of possibility tbh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,302 ✭✭✭Supergurrier

No offense but if you pay that you are a mug.

I bought my car for last June only had 59,000km and was a 2007 so it's not beyond normal for a evening/weekend car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭techguy

I just took a DSG out for a test drive there.

Didn't get to put the foot down but from what I got, I imagine full bore acceleration would be immense. Also, great whine out of the turbo which would never get old!

This one had cloth seats which were really comfy, i'd go as far discount the leather requirement. A welcome change as it broadens the search, a bit!

Too bad this one was too pricey for me. Best price was €14, 250 for '07.

The search continues! I feel a purchase is imminent, so better get insurance lined up next week. That won't be as much fun though :/

If you are test driving a car like a GTI a motorway/dual carriage way stint is a must - take it up to speed and see how it behaves.

    Hi Guys,

What do you think of this one? It seems to fit the bill nicely.

There's 3 owners marked on the ad. Would you guys consider this an issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,594 ✭✭✭tossy

Not as much an issue as the 5 doors :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,106 ✭✭✭dar83

Number of owners isn't that big of a deal, as long as the garage you're buying it off can tell you the cars background. With the options that car has I wouldn't be surprised if the first owner was a garage and it was a demo. There's one owner down already! :)

Check to see service history and verify that. That's far more important.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭techguy

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for the feedback on this thread. I eventually got myself a GTI. After trying both leather and cloth I opted for cloth as I found it more comfortable. Also, not as cold to sit into when it's freezing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,977 ✭✭✭rocky

    Cheers man.
The coilovers are grand but still need a little tweaking and new droplinks, but the quality is there, good stiff ride but not uncomfortable at all :) And the exhaust is great, Really like the sound of it, not too over the top :)

Hey Gollywog, sorry to hear about your misfortune. I'd be majorly pissed if my DSG gave up, is that gonna set you back a couple of grand?

Anyway, here's my new machine. It's a 5DR with DSG, MFSW, Cloth seats, 17" wheels and alarm.

No cruise control, which I miss and would consider a retrofit if I could find somebody to do it for a decent price. I've heard that it costs €450 +vat from ICE in Ranelagh. That seems a little high to be honest, is that accurate?

It's also got a Parrot MKi9200 which is great but I'm considering swapping it out for an Asteroid Smart (or something similar).

It's got 69 thousand km on the clock.

I know what you guys would say about the 17s but I was down the country at the weekend and I can only say i'm glad I don't have 18s. Ride was rough enough as is and I cant image the 18s would look good for long.
