Sugarsync and Controlled OS Reinstall

I'm about to reinstall W7 on my laptop due to a series of issues I've had over the last year. I've been happily using SugarSync throughout that time with great success and have certain folders where I make regular changes to files synched. When I've reinstalled my OS before, I'd simply copy the folders to my EXT HD and then copy it back once the reinstall has taken place and that would be that. I'm just not sure how it will work now with Sugarsync? if I disconnect from Sugarsync, back up to a hard drive, reinstall OS, copy files back and then reinstall sugarsync (and maybe there's an ini file which holds the location of my backed up folders?), will it be as if nothing has happened and it won't even recognise it as a new install or anything and continue working away as it always has?

I'd rather not have to re-download everything from the sugarsync servers and if I can just do it simply to and from an ext HD that would be preferred. I just don't want to disturb sugarsync.

    Any feedback would be appreciated!

I don't use sugarSync but if it uses a folder inside My documents or somewhere by restoring the backup of the folder (do this before installing the sugarsync program) Sugarsync should detect the folder is "up to date" so not re-download all the files :)

    Doesn't sound possible: https://sugarsync.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/39/kw/reinstall/related/1

If you set up the new install exactly the same way, same username, same folders, everything, you could try:
    • Install SugarSync, but don't configure it and exit out of it
    • copy the C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\SugarSync to the new install
    • Start SugarSync
but it's entirely possible that will feck everything up.

The simplest and must reliable way will be to download everything from Sugarsync after it's set up

Thanks for the suggestions folks. Would downloading from the site to the same folders, set up exactly the same way, not just be the same as putting them on from a HD? I guess once I have them on my HD, I can try all sorts with getting it right on SugarSync.

Actually, that might work. If all the folders are set up with the same names and content, then you install SugarSync and select those folders for upload, SugarSync might recognise that the content is identical, so won't re-download everything

What's the point of re-downloading everything (could easily be 10GBs on a free account, more if it's a paid one), if you already have all the files to hand?

ok i see your point. 10GBs is a lot of wasted time

Just to report back. All good with the new reinstall.

    The steps I took were:

    1) Backup all folders I had synched (they are all pretty much in the one place anyway so easy)
    2) Backup sugarsync files in program files and users>app data (it only appeared in local)
    3) Reinstall OS
    4) Copy personal files back to hard drive in same locations as they were previously
    5) Install sugarsync - I didn't go past the account login screen
    6) Copy sugarsync files to program files/users<app data (I got an error with one file that it was in use and couldn't be copied
    7) I restarted and nothing happened so I decided to try update to Sugarsync 2.
    8) downloaded sugarsync 2 from my sugarsync online dashboard, and installed
    9) It pretty much just worked from there.

I'm not sure how many of the aboves steps were necessary but all good anyway. Thanks for the help!
