I'm off on another rant so warning!

I was coming out of the gym (biggish chain of gyms in the North East) today at about 5, usual time when a lot of kids are coming in and out for swimming lessons.

It's fantastic that they're in swimming but then they come out and they are bombarded by junk!: bars, ice creams, popcorn, slush puppies, pick and mix, minerals....EVERYTHING! And of course, 4/5 kids end up getting something. As I was waiting for someone in the lobby I saw 5 kids pass me and every single on of them was chewing on something.

I really, really hate the fact that the gym sells this rubbish. I get that they're a business but to be promoting health and then sell that stuff is so hypocritical.

I've written to them before about it and no changes have been made, in fact, it's gotten worse.

My gym in Brno sold beer.

That said the only overweight person who was ever in there was me.

    yeah it defeats the purpose..

theres a bar / crisps vending machine in my gym but ive never seen anyone buy anything from it. there probably all out of date, but i guess with the pool being there the kids must buy them as your saying.. them and the staff that work there

My gym has those too but not near enough crap as yours. I've only seen children use them. I often see hyper children stuffing their faces while running for the bus. Another thing I've noticed quite a few times is the gym staff eating their lunch, I've seen quite a few take-aways, and other crap, I've yet to see one eat something that's actually healthy, not quite true I did see one shovelling in a can of tuna(straight from the can, blugh) before he did a class.
Then there's one of the female instructors who I've no time for, she said she wanted to lose some body fat and in the same conversation she said she eats 6 bars of chocolate a day. I actually did a real life facepalm.

Don't have one in my gym. The old one I use to go to had a little coffee shop in it but they only sold coffee, drinks, protein bars, energy drinks, salad, sandwiches. Which isn't a bad idea.
Don't recall them selling chocolate or crisps or any junk foods. Probably cause it wasn't somewhere that held classes for children.
Gyms will sell what people will buy, they prob get in the chocolate/crisps cause they know that it will sell if they have children attending it once in a while.

to be fair kids are kids, and I don't see the harm in them eating chocolate once in a while after doing some physical activity.
It's the kids that over eat drunk food and don't do exercise are the ones to worry about.

Commercial gym's are in the business of making money.Selling bar's and sweet's to kid's help's do this.
However,I agree with you that it's not right for kid's to be eating so much junk, the responsibility however lie's with the parent's of those children and not the gym.
