What games could you never beat?

I'm inspired tonight to create this thread after playing Outland on the PS3. I was really enjoying the game, finding it an interesting take on a retro style platformer. It also got noticeably harder as it progressed. Tonight I reached the 3rd boss and I know I won't ever beat it. All the content that I want to play is now locked out to me because this game doesn't offer a difficulty select.

You could say, get better at games but I don't have the time I used to to replay the same section 100 times to master it. Its just a shame as I was enjoying the game.

Anyone else find that they enjoyed a game but got stuck and never managed to play to the end?

One other game that I can remember it happening to me is Dark Souls.

I never finished Battletoads in Ragnarok's world on the original Gameboy. Couldn't pass the second or third level which was a ridiculously fast part (on a tiny screen) where you were on some kind of hover motorbike flying down a canyon with stalactites and stalagmites jutting from the top and bottom of screen.

For a long long long time I could never get past that 1st race event in GTA3 on the first island. Bought the game a few months after release and I don't know how many times I tried, but I could manage it at all.
Then I picked up the GTA bundle on Steam last year, got passed it first time and realised how much of the actual game I had yet to do.

Space Marine. The final boss battle was a pain in my ****.

Various silly missions in the games across the X series (X-beyond the frontier, x-terran conflict, etc). Some of them were so specialised or so gung-ho heavy you h ad to waste half your hard-earned fleet just to complete. No, thanks. I'll skip/cheat that instead.

Trials HD. I got so far in it, and threw in the towel.
Trials Evolution. I got so far in it, and threw in the towel.

I know they're beatable (and friends of mine have beaten them), but they drove me bloody demented. I got the Smile achievement in Geometry Wars 2 and Marble-Fu Transcendent achievement in Marble Blast Ultra (both really hard achievements that take perseverance and practice), but the Trials games were just beyond me. :o

Earliest memory is Back to the Future , which I eventually beat after memorising it !
Aside from that, Metal Sonic/ Final Boss at the end of Sonic 2 ....what an a$$ !!!

In recent years I've found that I've such a backlog, that if I get stuck for any reasonable time on a game ...I just go onto a different game with the mindset "I'll come back to that"

I've been stuck on the final boss forever in Outland, always get screwed on the final attack pattern :(

Might be an idea for you to rerun the rooms for whatever health upgrades etc are available ..... Edit : It's the spider boss we're talking about you're stuck on no????

Battletoads on the SNES. Just couldn't get past the speedbikes level. Did it a few years ago on a emulator though!

Doom on the snes. Didn't have a save feature so you had to try and finish the entire game in one sitting, which I did.. every Saturday morning. Always died in hell.

I remember it had a level select feature, so you could start the game in hell.. but you started with a handgun + 10 bullets or something ridiculous, as opposed to having all your weapons and ammo carry over from previous levels.

I finished it once but was never able to do it again. The skating event in California Games was another one, but I'm not sure if there really was a way to finish it.

It was Revenge of Shinobi for me as well until recently. Managed to beat it a few weeks ago. Other than that it's the Saturn mode of Radiant Silvergun. That game is difficult and very long!

    This guy:

    Mr._Dream.jpg

    *eye starts twitching* Punch Out.

Every few months I go at that asshole Mr. Dream and every time he mops the floor with my heartbroken, face smashed body while I cry in a corner and close my copy of VLC player with "You're the best around" still paused at the start, unplayed again.

    :'(

Yeah, that bloody spider. I should see if I can exit the boss level and go search out more hearts.

I made it to the bone dragon boss, and then you have to trek all the way back out again iirc, lovely looking game but absolutely infuriating to play in places.

Sonic 2. Just can't beat that final boss. Beaten all the other Mega Drive Sonic games, but not 2. Never 2.

This is crazy... I came in here to post Sonic 2! But, for me it was on the Master System 2, so technically a different game :pac:

I've always found that boss easy. It's Sonic 3 I have nightmares over.

Never finished FF VII. Was near the end and my memory card corrupted.

Prototype Final boss i could never beat. Worst of all it had to be timer based aswell jakajdhfhds, woednj

Phantasy star 4: zio with his demon bitch...

Gta 3: the mission you were in a tank ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,160 ✭✭✭tok9

Not sure what it called, but there was this Robocop game on the SNES that I could never beat and some ninja game which I also can't remember the name. Should still have it at home somewhere.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,906 ✭✭✭EGriff

Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 were probably the only ones I really wanted to finish but couldn't. Great games and I loved the feel of them but they just got too damn hard by about half way through.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,942 ✭✭✭missingtime

There was a terminator game on the Commodore 64 that I could never finish. I think it was the level with Sarah Connor.

Final fantasy 7. Stopped playing it shortly after (iirc) finding ariel alive after she'd died. When i finally went back to it, i spent ages travelling around, battling, not knowing where I was supposed to go next. Packed it in and lost the game saves. Never went back it again as it'd take too long to get back to that point. Always regret not getting to fight Sephiroth

Last boss in Shinobi. Needed to be pixel perfect with the safe spots which was beyond me at the age of 12.

Y's - The Vanished Omens. There's a room right at the end that even with a guide I couldn't figure out.

Last boss in MGS4. Gave up after a couple of goes as it was a thinly veiled QTE and I had lost the will to sit through another lengthy cut-scene.

Final Fantasy VIII is the one of the only games I could never beat the end boss and consequently, I quit the game. I think I was after messing up the saves and was stuck at a point where I was going into the last fight unprepared and badly equipped to do well. Only option I had was to either try and win or start the game over again. After about a month of almost winning I called it a day.It still fcuking haunts me to this day:(

FFVIII is pretty easy, the problem is figuring out who the fecking game works. I'd say you were well prepared for the final boss. I was in a similar situation, I used summons through the whole game only to realise towards the end that they were useless and that junctioning magic to your stats totally broke the games difficulty. If you understand that and how levelling up abilities for your GF's works then the game becomes about breaking the battle system of the game and it's a lot of fun. I'm also pretty sure you can leave the final area of FFVIII but then since all enemies level up with you grinding wouldn't really have helped if you didn't understand the system.

Can't remember it too well but remember breezing through the whole game till that point. Found the boss battle easy enough till (think there was a count down clock) the very end and then just got destroyed at the same part over and over again.
Never realised that the enemies were levelling up as well. Vaguely remember going off grinding and returning only to get killed at the same point.
Picked up FF7 for the PC so must have a gander and see if I can find 8 again and give it another go. Always bothered me not completing it.Sank so much time into it and always felt I cheated myself by giving up.

FFVII is a hell of a lot simpler.

I don't blame you for getting stuck on the final boss. I found it a massive jump in difficulty. I got there as well not even playing the game properly :)

I never completed original super mario. :( . I know I will turn in my gamer card.

I was thinking that battle toads would be quite high on each gamers list. Ultimate challenge? Do it in coop! :D

I never completed Dead Space 2. Got to the last boss but due to lack of ammo/firepower I would keep dying before finishing it.

Oh god, loads of games. I don't thrive on beating that level after 100 attempts. I give up well before that. Don't like games being too hard, as the frustration takes away from my enjoyment. Some notable mentions:

Dark Souls - Very, very early on. Fcuk that game.
Battletoads on the GB - That level...
Any Final Fantasy game - More to do with refusing to accept the crappy combat system.
Bomberman: Act Zero - Nothing to do with difficulty, just so bad that it would be impossible to continue.
    Wizards and Warriors 3
Vanquish - Just not my type of game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,564 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I can add Viewtiful Joe as well here, I think. Got to BRuce but after the 10th time dying, I got bored of playing the bit before him over and over again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,082 ✭✭✭✭chopperbyrne

FF VIII gave you detailed tutorials explaining everything and let you review them whenever you wanted from that point on. How could you not figure it out?

Even if you were relying on using GFs in battle, the game gives you a massive hint about half way through that you shouldn't rely on GFs.

R-Type, could beat the first 5 worlds only, always died on the transport system level. Spent a LOT of 10p coins on it when younger.

Plenty of other games I've not finished, but that was a decision of not wasting my time on them, not because I got stuck.

Currently working through Dark Souls blind, which I've seen mentioned here a few times. I'm chasing down something called lordvessel in Anor Londo. Can't see myself giving up any time soon, although I might resort to looking stuff up for it.

I found it easy to beat, hammered through it in about 6 hours, loved the combat but terrible story. Probably the worst computer game story I have ever experienced.
I still occasionally play it when I don't feel like playing anything else.

I remember staying up late for nights on end playing Zelda on the Gameboy but I never got to the end. The last recollection I have of the game was going around with a shovel digging up every inch of ground looking for a leaf.

When we got to college there was one arcade game in the college bar - Pang. We got pretty good at Pang but could never get beyond a certain level. There was one mature student who was amazing at the game. He was a quiet kind of guy with a long pony tail and a beard, we reckoned him for an engineer, but he was The Pang King.

The first time we saw him play he cleared the level we had been stymied by without breaking a sweat. That was when the chant began: Pang King...Pang King...Pang King!!

Later that night over pints the Pang King told us that he had only ever beaten the Pang machine once. The machine returned his 20p piece by rolling it back out of the money slot to signal his victory.

The Pang King's story gave us the strength and hope we needed to carry on in our own balloon battles and from that day forward whenever we met the man the cry went up: Pang King! Pang KING!! PANG KING!!!
