There are laws in place that people have to abide by.

And the country has a 'quasi' immigration policy, as all the powers we presume to hold now are 'quasi' as they're essentially rendered obsolete, given that we've continually voted to be subject to European law; not that it'll be too stretched with people moving to this economically moribund place.

I agree with the idea that, everything possible, government policy wise, that can be done, should be done to expediate intergration and avoid ghettosiation; not that we actually have a government we can vote for that holds any power in these matters.

It's essentially a matter for the EU to decide upon/enforce.

Here's an interesting little storm developing in a teacup from America.

TL;DR version is that a fictional program decided to take on an aspect of the multiculturalism issue and some political writer decided to take issue with it.

Culture=/=race. Racists may or may not endorse a multicultural society, though xenophobes certainly wouldn't.

I think the problem with European nations is that they don't integrate their immigrants. Integration is not only the responsibility of the newcomer it is also the responsibility of the country that accepts them.

I live over in Canada and no one does multiculturism like here. Canada is one of the few countries (not even the US) in the world that integrates its immigrants.

Over here, I was astounded by the services offered to landed immigrants, and it is not in the form of welfare checks. They have immigration counselling that assist landed immigrants with integration and culture shock, language courses, job search and getting settled. What happens to immigrants when they land over at Dublin airport? In France? Spain? Greece? Apparently not much. They are taught to fend for themselves and it makes them feel like unwelcomed guests. This is what makes many not want to integrate and stick with their own because they feel like they cannot trust the locals.

I have never travelled or lived in a country where I found the immigrants more openly patriotic that the locals. I really think it really has to do with the government and the services it provides to newcomers.

Is it really. What an amazingly bold assertion. You do realise- as I've said more than once - that multicultarilism =/= "blacks living in the country".

    And your point is???

One wikipedia article does not an arguement make.
All Western European societies and those in North America suffer from similar syndromes whether those societies be multicultural or not.

Is that why its called white flight:rolleyes:its strange isnt it

Why water our own culture down.

    What is our culture?

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Plus,it's not some NEW !,IMPROVED ! thing which Canada sudenly discovered after the last flight from Lagos...

35 years ago I accquired Visa approval to emigrate to Canada.

The process back then was thorough and involved much face to face interviewing in Canada House on Stephens Green (Lovely gentleman,M. L.A. Le Blanc )

Once the basic issues of qualification were addressed and verified (Trade Certificates etc),the focus was most squarely shifted to the Integration issue.

Even the area within Canada was chosen on the basis of requirement for my trade, and I was required to accept a residency condition for that province.

It was made abundantly clear that I,as a successful applicant, had understood and agreed to the Canadian Committment.

As with the OP,I was given a cart-load of information on the services, not alone available, but expected to be fully availed of as well as being appraised about how I would be monitored in Canada post arrival,to check on my progress.

However, even back then I knew that this was as far away from the "Irish" way of doing stuff as Canada was physically from Carlow !!!

The issues really are'nt Multiculturalism,Integration,Assimilation or any other 'ism but rather the ability of a State to have faith and confidence in it's own systems and infrastructure.

Dieu et Mon Droit.....might not be altogether that bad..eh....;)

It's all an eu con , do not think that the French or German care about our country Ireland they don't ! Fact us the uk and Ireland are joined we are joined by the millions of Irish people in the uk or the people of Irish decent , they and us have a lot in common long is past history fact is in the uk there's over 7 million people from Irish decent , And about mr farage he is far from right wing or racist but he is a realist we need real men and women in politics with spines and who can answer a question direct , people who excel in business and people from exceptional success in the real world. We are run by career politicians who have been brain washed in to thinking a certain way they have no experience in the real world nor how it is to live in fear , they have high payed jobs a pension for life if they serve 3 years !!!!!! And if they suck up to the eu they will get an even higher paid job there . We need to be the masters if our own destinies and get out if the Eu now wake up people . Over 100000 skilled intelligent young People have left our island for the uk and australia in this last year alone , skilled kids for Ireland's future gone in search of work , yet are doors wide open for immigration to unskilled non English speaking migrants to work for nothing , our identity our country is being wiped away by the eu and we are blind austerity bailouts , and this free movement of people is a deliberate attempt to make identity in nation states disapear so then their idea of an eu identity take over. Farage is only politician with balls to stick up for the people not just of uk but Ireland and every other country All political parties home and abroad don't care what we think if we get it wrong they bully us and make us vote again.... How long to we realize that thus euro thus eu , this immigration is all for big business and banks to prosper and all to create united states of Europe , so don't fight farage because he has a British accent listen to him and join him in the fight which is going to be long but a fight for democracy and freedom

I tend to enjoy Mr Farage's speeches,if not for their content, then for the variety of body language to be seen in his targets as they listen.

I think what bothers many,is that Farage is quite the effective speaker,in a forum dominated by career civil-servant tutored politicians who'se ability to mumble and send folks to sleep are well honed.

However, that said,I await the arrival of The Squad to reslove Liam Griffins other,non-Nigel,points....;)
