    Whats happened to TV3 HD?

We were told that the studios had been finished at the end of 2012 and yet we still have no TV3 HD!

I also read that TV3 were hoping to introduce 2 new channels, TV3+1 and TV3 Kids, any news on them?

Unless TV3 have discovered a pot of someone else's money it's unlikely to happen.

Are they even paying commercial rates for Saorview coverage and all their other broadcasting obligations ?

Also Studios ? IIRC TV3 have ONE studio with three desks

TV3′s new HD studio to be operational by end of the year
    13/09/12

TV3 HAS SAID that its new High Definition studio next door to its
headquarters in Dublin will be operational before the end of the year.

The broadcaster unveiled an artist’s impression of what the new studio will
look like as it agreed a deal with Sony International for the tech company to
provide the latest HD camera and equipment for the studio.

All Sony businesses in Ireland have secured exclusive first usage of the
facility as part of the deal which was negotiated over the summer by TV3′s
commercial director, Pat Kiely, who said that the new studio was “a major
development for the sector in Ireland”.

    What happened?

The studio has been built and is operational!

Tv3 seem to be silent on the HD issue anyway... I emailed them enquiring what had happen to their new studio and HD channel about a week ago and as of now have heard nothing back.

TV3 had their massive bank debt and banking relationship with IBRC. IBRC is now in liquidation with KPMG the liquidator. I wonder if KPMG are giving TV3 working capital.

No mention of when the HD service will launch though - ironic that RTE have the HD transmission but no HD facilities (and very few programs in HD)

You would be thinking if TV3 had any plans for launching a HD channel then the Man Utd - Real Madrid Champions League match on Tuesday would probably be the perfect advertising platform for it, its one of the biggest matches in years especially among Irish footballing fans and will draw a massive television audience... I for one certainly won't be watching TV3's awful PQ when I can turn over to ITV HD for free, I'm sure many others will do the same.

I wouldn't watch TV3 coverage even if it was in high definition. Everything about their coverage is awful

Article on this in today's Irish Times bussiness supplement - TV3's most promising baby gets a star-studded welcome
Tonight, TV3 will put on a show, and not just any old show. A special, not-for-broadcast episode of Tonight with Vincent Browne will be filmed in front of an invited audience of 200-plus guests, who will stream into TV3’s newest and most promising baby: the Sony HD Studio Dublin.

Plaque-unveiling duties for TV3’s 500sq m facility-cum-futureproof-strategy will be performed by local TD and Minister for Communications Pat Rabbitte, in what is likely to be one of his few moments of media-related cheer this week.

    ...

Located opposite TV3’s existing Ballymount premises, the Sony HD Studio Dublin is now Ireland’s largest television studio, edging RTÉ’s Studio 4, the home of The Late Late Show, into second place.

Constructing a television studio isn’t a simple task. Financially, TV3 – which spent €4-€5 million on the building – had to employ some ingenuity, spending last summer pursuing and negotiating a deal with Sony International that involves the supply of some €7 million of Sony HD camera and editing equipment.

    ...

Closer to home, possible third-party clients include rivals such as RTÉ (to which TV3 is now an accredited supplier), which could in theory use the studio in much the same way that the BBC avails of ITV production facilities on occasion.

From what I can make out its not a *real* episode of the show, more an guise for the studio's launch party.

Suppose we should mention TV3's newly opened HD studio. IFTN declaring it as a success, though they haven't yet to start broadcasting in HD.

At the very least they are getting rid of their god awful cromakey sets.

In particular a typical rte 2 hd broadcast of a sports event to bbc or itv hd one. I am watching them from a sky hd box. Its really obvious I think when the dunphy, giles, brady panel are on. Looks very softened/smeared. maybe to make the aul codgers luk a little less their age:o. even with younger panel members on other rte events though the problem is there. I know there would be different lighting/other variables etc in an rte studio studio to take into consideration, compared to a bbc itv one. In general though the match itself is grand as all the stations get the same feed. Other hd porgrammes produced by other broasdcasters( top gear etc) but shown on rte look fine aswell.

The studio bits on the champions league are upscaled on RTE that's why it doesn't look as good as ITV but the actual match itself is running at a higher bitrate then ITV. RTE Two HD runs at 12.1 Mb/s whereas ITV HD is slightly lower at 10.3/9.9 Mb/s (depending on which ITV HD it is). RTE Two HD is actually one of the best channels in terms of bitrates in on Astra 28.2, apart from some sky HD channels that is.

Well mate if their past record is anything to go on we could be waiting a hell of a long time... but they may surprise us you would never know. What I can see happening is that TV3 HD might be exclusive to UPC.

In fairness to TV3 ... and we should at least be at times fair.... They seem to be planning the studio as a production facility. I assume they will now upgrade their old studios to HD and move the news and lifestyle back into the main building, thus keeping the HD studio for other productions that may have no relation to TV3, TV3 were keen to note that the studio is an RTÉ designated studio.

Can the greenscreen graphic's that TV3 use now for everything be still used effectively for HD broadcasting? ... the recent upgrade of the 5.30 news graphics look very cheap even with SD broadcasting compared with most other broadcasters anyway.

Heard that but alas no mention of a HD channel

So we have TV 3 in a HD studio broadcasting in SD.

Did anyone watch the special Vincent Browne show they recorded there a few weeks ago on TV3.ie yet?

The studio audience seemed a little crammed to me. A few words said from the guy of RTE saying that wages at TV3 mustn't be great, if their 'stars' are working weekend jobs elsewhere. Wonder who he's talking about.

Is there tickets available to be in the studio audience?

We know the former analogue channels will eventually go HD but not until the second mux become available and TV3 agree to pay the higher capacity costs for an HD channel. We're still waiting for the Ministerial Decision on multilpex tarrif charges. The "man who works in the tv trade" knows no more than we do here.

I don't know when TV3 HD will appear but TG4 is already part time HD on UPC and the director general of RTE said that RTE ONE will be HD By the end of this year.

the director general of RTE said that RTE ONE will be HD By the end of this year.

Provided the second mux is up and running by then, no spare capacity on the existing mux.

You mean it will be RTE1 in up scaled HD if it does launch. RTE2 HD is mainly up scaled, the odd soccer or rugby match here and there is in HD. No HD for the Punchestown racing this week. I suppose up scaled is better than SD.

It's full. Some would argue that it's too full already.

Remember it's only taking as much space as one old analog channel

And costing about the same as one. They should fire up the second mux and put the four RTE channels on that (in HD for 1 and 2) and put TG4HD and TV3HD plus the others on the seond mux. To pay for it, allow RTE 3 and News Now to run advertising.

My guess is that it won't generate new advertising revenue just move it from existing channels.

And advertising on kids channels is not something I like.

In fairness Sam Russell didn't suggest advertising on Kids TV.

News Now with free ads however moves advertising elsewhere as audiences move to a no ad TV channel.

Sky have made gains in advertising revenue in the first 3 months of the year with RTÉ and TV3 both seeing losses. Larges this is due to DSO.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 20,228 Mod ✭✭✭✭Sam Russell

    No ads on RTE jr.

A proper News Channel for RTE NN that would not be simulcast with other news broacasts. For example, The Politics PROGRAMME shown live on RTE NN and shown later on RTE 1 at 11pm. The Morning Edition should be a RTE NN programme. Some programmes could be radio programmes produced for NN by having an automated studio, a bit more sophisticated than the webcam on Morning Ireland. New at One, Today with PK, DriveTime all spring to mind, together with Morning Ireland. A business type programme for noon to 1pm would help. Add a bit of Dail time in there and you may have a good schedule. A bit of repeats of earlier stuff in the evening and they would be there. A little bit of advertising revenue would pay for it if it got an audience.

RTE 3 would run from 7pm till 1pm and would carry European subtitled programmes and archive stuff from RTE. Again, it would be cheap to run and any advertising would help pay for it. The current +1 is a waste of spectrum. Danish, Swedish, French stuff I have watched on BBC4 was well worth watching.

RTE have four channels and currently only programme two of them. A bit of VISION lads in Montrose - even if you are short of the readies.

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 12,154 Mod ✭✭✭✭icdg

All the vision in the world doesn't help if TV3 is jumping up and down crying "state aid" at every time RTÉ tries to develop its services, and the Department continue to impose unreasonable conditions on RTÉ's new services that effectively restrict them to simulcasts and repeats.
