MyFitnessPal calorie calculator

Just wondering about the accuracy of the recommended calorie intake on MyFitnessPal.

I`ve been using it for the last 4 or 5 months, more as a tool for some nutritional information and a break down of percentages of intake of carbs/fat/protein, and also as an aide to generally eating a more balanced diet.

Having said that, i have stuck to the calorie guide suggested to maintain weight but in that time I have lost around a stone in weight!

I`m 5 foot 9" in height and when I started using MyFitnessPal I weighted around 11.5 stone. I sit in front of a computer all day for my job so get little exercise.
It came up with a recommended calorie intake of 1980 to maintain my weight, which I have stuck to more or less and now I weigh just under 10.5 stone.

I didnt mind the bit of weight loss initially as I could have done with shedding 7 or 8 pounds but now it does really seem that it is under estimating my calorie needs.

i have tried to keep my entries as accurate as possible, weighing foods initially etc so I would hope they are fairly accurate.

Anyone else find that the calorie calculation can be a bit off? Does 1980 calories a day sound on the low size for a guy my height and weight with sedentary lifestyle?

To be honest, I'd say never mind what number it's giving you.

If you're losing weight, you need more cals. Add another couple of hundred on and keep adding until you maintain.

If you're finding it hard to eat that much up your intake of calorie dense foods like oils, seeds, nuts etc...

If you're losing weight and don't want to, just eat more! Throw an extra handful of nuts into your lunchbox every day, something like that. Don't trust everything MFP tells you!

The mfp calorie suggestions are sh!te.

bw in lbs x 12 to lose weight, x 14 to maintain and x 16 to put on weight.

You can edit it in 'goals'.
